What really fucks me up about people saying Sam going to the cage was some sort of redemption for his actions in season 4 is that Sam undoubtedly thought that too. Sam thought being tortured for years was repentance. Sam couldn’t forgive himself for being abused and manipulated into freeing Lilith so he endured more abuse as punishment. Do you guys think he thought that every day in the cage? That maybe Dean and Bobby would be proud of him and forgive him wherever they were if Lucifer just hurt him again and again and again.
