I first read “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley in middle school as this comic drawn by Gavin Aung Than. I absolutely loved it. I loved the comic as a whole but was captivated by the panel of the boy holding the hammer behind his back as his bullies charge. This poem has and always will be stuck in the back of my mind.

“Invictus” — Latin for “unconquerable” — teaches us that we are the sole caretakers of our wellbeing. Life is going to fuck you up. You will suffer mentally and/or physically. It is okay to be sad! It is normal to feel defeated! But, yes, you alone decide what to do with your experiences. You hold the power of your future. And because you are unconquerable, you will rise again, you will grin and bear it, and you will carry on.

So, take your meds, go to that protest, finish your schoolwork, commute to work, drink more water, make your dinner, write, read, pray, cry, sing, dance, build, whatever!
