I think this was the first concrete anti-authoritarian principle I ever adopted. by the time I was 6 I had recognised how parents and teachers LOVE to say "listen to me" when they mean "do what I want" and I knew I hated it. it betrays an insufferably entitled belief that the only reason someone might not be doing what you want them to is that they haven't properly received your instructions. that they couldn't possibly have the agency to hear and understand and then decide differently.

by age 8 I had started to retort with "I'm listening, I just decided not to do it", which my dad (anti-establishment academic) loved and my mum (a cop in all ways except literal) hated.

fast-forward a few decades, and I now realise that when my ex-spouse started using "you're not listening to me" to mean "why aren't you doing what I told you", I should have ended things right then and there. looking back on it there was no coming back from that.

anyway, pay attention to the casual assumptions about authority embedded in the language people choose. it tells you so much.

I try not to fall into the "I never liked their work anyway" ditch when an artist/creator reveals themself to be a terrible person

BUT

a feeling I do have and will stand by is "While I enjoyed their work overall I did have some gripes that I overlooked out of affection and whimsy, but now that my loyalty is gone and my affection tainted there is nothing holding me back from enumerating my many grievances, to which the revelations of the creator's shittiness may or may not provide a new and infuriating context."

Top: Super Mario 64 is the first game that lists Princess Peach's name as "Peach Toadstool", being known almost exclusively as "Princess Toadstool" in Western material and "Princess Peach" in Japanese material prior to this. (She was referred to as "Princess Peach" in Yoshi's Safari in 1993 in English once before.)

Bottom: in a 2025 interview with Time Extension, Leslie Swan, localization manager on various Nintendo games and voice of Peach in Super Mario 64, revealed that she was the one who suggested this compromise of using both names to Miyamoto herself.

As such, very fittingly, the person who is heard saying "Princess Toadstool, Peach" at the beginning of Super Mario 64 for the first time also happens to be the person who invented the name in the first place.

When I was a new parent we had children's centres that had health visitors and nurses come and visit to answer questions and play groups and support and they were fantastic and were a massive help in getting me through the rough first few years and helped me be the kind of parent I wanted me to be

Most of them are closed now

We need investment in community outreach. Investment in groups that support marginalised communities and investment in infrastructure and third spaces where people (including kids and teens!) can meet and socialise

Invest in places where doctors and nurses can answer questions

Where social workers and volunteers are available.

Give education and services that support local communities and facilitate understanding

More importantly give people more safety nets so they don't feel so fucking desperate and stop hiding the safety nets we have!

Governments when presented with a social problem love to respond with "it is now illegal to have social problem"

Rather then address the actual issues or solve the actual source of the problems
