One time when I was a kid a group of girls and I had to treat another student for hypothermia by ourselves because she had so many invisible health issues that the adults we asked for help didn't believe us. The student in question was actively hallucinating. When I finally ran for help the people I grabbed were slow as shit to respond, casually joking about how "dramatic" the person in question was.
The kid was picked up by an ambulance 30 minutes later.
Now as an adult working in security I get SO MANY folks- upper-middle aged mostly- coming to me to 'rat out' people they think are faking it.
I was once sent into a bathroom because a client demanded that the "fucker won't get out, so go drag them out"- I was NEVER going to do that, so I did a wellness check instead. You know who it was? A person recently released from the hospital after a car accident. They had a hole in their skull and major hearing loss. They couldn't answer the owner because they couldn't HEAR the owner.
Another time about a homeless man who got around town by kicking the ground from his wheelchair. "You know he doesn't actually need that thing, his legs work fine, it's just for pity points"- Oh, so he's not paralyzed, his wheelchair is performative? Funny story Dale, I actually know that guy, he was backed over by a truck and has chronic pain from his shattered pelvis. But sure, let's make him stand up and walk everywhere so nobody feels too bad for him and tries to help him or something.
"She doesn't need that scooter, I've seen her get out of it."
"Look how fat he is, because he just rides around and refuses to get up."
"She doesn't really need that cane- she comes here without it all the time"

Please for this weekend I need something to stay in a hotel so I can finally rest in a bed and relax while recovering from my asthma, taking my medicine treatment. I don't want to sleep outside right now for my health! It'll help so I can breathe better.

Iâm actually going to reblog a thing just because this is really important.
As someone who has epilepsy and used to have several grand mal seizures a day, Iâd also like to add that âoffer helpâ can range anywhere from keeping the person calm to explaining to them where they are and what they were doing to even just telling them they should sit and rest for a while longer (lack or coordination is common, and it can be hard to walk straight or see clearly).
Itâs okay for them to take up to a half hour to fully regain their bearings and sort out what they were doing prior to the seizure. Just answer any questions calmly and be there for support.
If they come around and you start to panic or shake them or ask them what the heck is wrong with them they are going to freak out and panic too.
I cannot stress it enough that this is bad.
If someone has a seizure and they come out of it, please. please stay calm. They are likely disoriented and confused, even if itâs only for a minute or two, and you donât want them panicking on top of that because they can have another seizure as a result.
IMPORTANT
IMPORTANT because last year a kid in my class had a seizure, none of us even knew he was at risk for them either so just cause you donât think you know anyone doesnât mean you donâtÂ

I have to stress how important it is to time a seizure. If it lasts more than a few minutes, call an ambulance.
DO NOT CALL THE POLICE. Iâm dead fucking serious. I had a grand mal in public once and the POLICE were called and imagine coming out of the seizure, feeling like you got smacked in the head with a sack full of bricks, confused, dazed, in desperate need of some sugar to boost low blood pressure and some DIPSHIT has called the police and I was being threatened with being âdrunk and disorderlyâ. It took a phone call to my doctors office to get them to back off. The police cannot properly deal with sick people.Â
Offer help can be:
assuring person where they are/what time it is
getting them something to drink if they can; seizure burns so much energy and does cause a blood pressure drop
getting them safely to transport or a carer
getting them some dignity like a blanket/towel [loosing control of your bladder and bowels is fucking horrifying]
ensuring they have a way to get home. Someone who has just had a seizure should NEVER DRIVE straight after
calling emergency services if you notice any of these symptoms because they may have stroked out.
Why you shouldnât put anything in someoneâs mouth: they will choke. Yes, they may bite their tongue but I can assure you itâs less traumatic than cracking your jaw on someoneâs greasy wallet or choking on a spoon.
DO NOT HOLD ANYONE DOWN. Example: someone pinned my right shoulder mid-seizure a few years back and how I have a permanently displaced and clicking shoulder. Let the person flail around, those muscles are out of control and restraining them does cause more damage to the patient and you.

Iâm a diabetic and lemme tell you, DONT TIME A DIABETIC SEIZURE! look for that medical alert bracelet/necklace/whatever ASAP. Some seizures will end and the person will wake up.
HOWEVER!!! most times a diabetic has a seizure they wonât be waking up without medical attention. Timing the seizure also wonât do anything for a diabetic seizure aside from causing more harm to the diabetic.
If itâs a diabetic having a seizure, call 911 (ambulance not police) stay with them, monitor them but call 911 and get help as soon as you can.

The way adult fandom people hold indie online creators and cartoons to a much higher standard than their actual local politicians. For anybody not caught up: Tennessee just passed a new map that pretty much makes it so black neighborhoods have no power in local votes. Two things about this. While protestors were chanting "No Jim Crow", white Tennessee lawmakers were caught laughing on video. On top of this, Representative Justin Pearson and his brother KeShaun Pearson were arrested for trying to give their takes on the matter (which is not only their legal right but literally his job). If you give a shit about black people, help fight this. We can't allow a return to Jim Crow.
Like a month ago I messaged a craft group about accessibility for wheelchairs and the answer I got was âthereâs a lot of stairs but we have cute boys who can carry youâ. And itâsâŚnot good. As a wheelchair bound person I largely depend on people when I want to go out and do *anything* so Iâm used to it, I laugh it off, make an annoyed post about it and off I go. But I wanna just say a thing real quick.
Even if I wasnât gay, wasnât a survivor scared of men, getting help as a disabled person is justâŚNot a pleasant thing to us! Imagine for a sec how youâd feel being carried up a flight of stairs. Youâre a grown person. Youâre being touched in an awkward way. Youâd rather do it yourself. Youâre So Uncomfortable. Itâs not where I look for the beginning of a romantic relationship.
