in the movie, veronica was always like the heathers. she was just like them, prior to the movie. there was no nerdy girl turned hot. we can assume she was a stereotypical popular girl literally up until just prior to the beginning of the movie. that only exists in the musical because the writers thought she was "too nice" to be friends with the heathers, and they couldn't understand how she got mixed up with them. which is stupid, because heather chandler says with her own mouth that veronica used to like doing pranks and bullying people and is only just recently (maybe even just that day) putting up any sort of resistence to it. there was no "geek squad/dweebette" time for her, as far as we know. heather duke basically tells us that veronica ditched betty finn as soon as she realized she was a hot girl. like, she literally is that friend that got pretty over summer break and then pretends she never knew you the rest of your time in school together. she asked to be one of the heathers, based on heather chandler's dialogue, but not because she was bullied or desired any sort of protection - because she was also a mean popular girl. which is the point. she is meant to be the anti molly ringwald - she is not an underdog, and she never has been. in fact, before winona ryder, she was a sadist who decided it felt better to hurt other popular kids after getting bored with bullying the losers of the school. and after winona ryder, the only thing that changed is that she isn't an overt sadist who has grown bored of her old pranks - she still is a popular girl who has just recently grown despondent with her own popularity. the reason that remington party was her "first remington party" isn't because she was new to the group - it was because she had sworn off of high school guys and wanted to try dating college guys, like heather chandler does. maybe heather chandler hasn't even been going to college parties for very long either. but it's definitely not veronica trying to "prove herself" to the heathers, since she's already been a heather for quite some time. she also says all of this when she's telling jd her backstory after strip croquet. this is not heathers esoterica guys, they literally say this shit to the audience.
