The best advice I can think of since you have a history as a Dog Dad is don’t expect a cat to behave like a dog does. Sounds obvious but a lot of dog people don’t realize you’re just… not going to train a cat the same way you can train a dog. Cats are very independent creatures. You’re honestly signing up for a roommate more than a pet in some ways.

Respect the cat’s boundaries but especially if he or she is young don’t be afraid to push them a little, like picking them up, handling them a lot, messing with them gently to get them used to human contact.
