Blue Castle Book Club: Kdrama Valarney
Early in TBCBC 2.0, a bookclubber pointed out how well The Blue Castle would work as a kdrama. It's got the stifling family expectations, the class issues, the secret chaebol heir! (I'd love to link to the post but have looked for it and can't find it, so OP, if this was you, please let me know.)
So - a quick kdrama Valarney fancast! Instead of my typical imaginary modest CBC production, I'll assume the TBC script warrants a fully financed kdrama, so no budget constraints here. I'm also not going to worry about finding actors who are as close as possible to the characters' ages, because in kdramas they are perfectly happy to put a 40-year-old actor in bangs and a school uniform and say they're a teenager.
For Valancy, I think the one physical aspect of her character that really wouldn't survive translation is the emphasis on her skinniness as an embarrassing thing for which the Stirlings constantly criticize her, because I don't see how that could work in a kdrama culture that treats actresses as "fat" for being, say, only 10 pounds under a healthy weight as opposed to 20. And if you were to flip the reason for the Stirlings' criticism so that Valancy started out being seen as "fat" and underwent a journey where she was no longer seen that way at the end of the story, I think there are multiple levels on which that wouldn't be true to Valancy's evolution as a character. So I think I'm just leaving weight out of the equation altogether, and assuming kdrama!Valancy's family oppresses her in other ways.
When I think of a kdrama actress who can play quietly downtrodden, and who can undergo a journey to happy and blooming, the one who comes to mind is Shin Hyun Bin:

And for Barney, when I think of someone who can play scruffy and weird and loves disguises, who else but Lee Je Hoon?

Yes?
Yes!
No! I have a different kdrama fancast, which I will explain below
Nuance / I'm going to miss TBCBC 2.0
Of course, in the kdrama version, Barney and Valancy will have to have a SIGNIFICANT MEETING AS CHILDREN where one of them falls into that water tank that shows up in every kdrama Lake Mistawis and is pulled out by the other, but I'm only fancasting adult kdrama!Valarney here.
ask game 21: do you have any living grandparents?
I do! Only one of my grandparents is dead, and I actually remember two of my great-grandparents. The other three grandparents are alive and well. (Which reminds me that I need to call my grandma, so thank you!)
aging population asks:
19. how many wisdom teeth do you have and have you had any removed? (one of the few I don't actually know the answer to or could make a raesonable guess... )
I have four! They are no longer in my jaw, but in a jar on a shelf in my room. :)

Today I discovered, while shopping for an electric fan, that there is an entire Reddit forum dedicated to electric fans and the people who love them. People are discussing the restoration of vintage fans, and whether the patina should be preserved or, if repainting, how to be most faithful to the original aesthetic vision. At this point, I shouldn't be surprised by the passion of esoteric fan (ha!) communities, but it was an unexpected delight!

Okay, I feel I should give the disclaimer that I don't follow her super closely! Her wedding content is the first series I've been following faithfully, and I think it's my favorite of her work just because it's so joyful!

you are a woman in a fantasy book written by a man. choose your personality trait
PETITE but super strong (defeats men easily 3x your size)
crosses arms across breasts / yanks braid in irritation
has giant sexy bazongers (that are sooooo inconvenient for archery)
"ugh, MEN" (acts in completely irrational manner)
only female character among cast of 3,000 men
see male protagonist > i must bone him immediately
written to "defeat sexist tropes" but is just written as a man instead
not like the OTHER girls (tucks hair behind ears)
damsel in distress (faints dramatically) ooohhhhh
#i recently entered a place and someone said “oh my god there's a girl here!”#it was a joke#but I feel like it tells me what I need to know
Mird, I wish I could say I were surprised.
Okay guys, I have one big and scary task I want to do before the end of the summer.
Over a decade ago, one of my reenactment friends lent me a book about a fairly niche historical craft. I truly didn't mean to keep it, but, the first time I came to bring it back, she told me I could hang on to it for a bit longer, since she wasn't using it.
Unfortunately it absolutely slipped my mind when I moved out of state, and I ended up packing it away with my own books and discovering it at my new apartment.
I have now attempted to mail it back to her twice, but both times I've been derailed by some pretty rough stuff in my personal life, and I honestly feel a bit ashamed to contact her at this point. I have the book now, and I'm a bit more stable, so I think it's time to write a really nice note and send it to her. I'll have to text her and hope she still has the same number, because it's daunting to track her down through mutual friends. I assume she has the same address, but I've been shy to reach out since I already asked her for her mailing address twice.
Third time pays for all, as Mr. Bilbo Baggins's father used to say! Wish me luck. I'm posting here because I need to feel that I'm not hiding this, and also to feel like people are rooting for me.

Don't cry, darling ^honeysweet Moonlight^
LMM shuffling through the terms of endearment that Barney calls Valancy—"darling" which amazed her; "honeysweet" (maybe because Valancy inspired his Wild Honey?); and finally her own unique term of endearment, "Moonlight."
thinking bout 2019 and how i took her for granted

What is prev to you?
the smell of woodsmoke in the dark
sunlight glittering on drifts of snow
opening chords to a classic song after an ad break on the radio
daisies in a mason jar
the curve in the road you always take a bit too fast
blank notebook with a leather cover
a stone church with carvings and spires and stained-glass
a cool pillow and a warm blanket at midnight
playlist that makes sense to no one else
yellow leaf floating down a clear cold river
silver fog over green hills and warm hands in raincoat pockets
a strain of violin music floating through a crowded subway
problematic plot relevance gap
The Teddy Kent or Kenneth Ford problem
