Learn to kindly but firmly say âthatâs personalâ.
You owe no one information about your body, your opinions, your family, your health, not even your favorite food if u dont wanna share.
A kinda creepy guy at work asks what u did on the weekend? A well-meaning relative asks abt your health problems? A friend of a friend asks about your partner? Maybe smile for a second and then say âyou know, thatâs actually kinda personalâ and change the subject or give a very general answer if u want.
You are entitled to privacy and to choosing who to share what with.
This is a really underrated approach to shutting down invasive questions about your illness or disability. Not only is it part of a social script (=socially acceptable), but being part of a script means they are less likely to push back or be offended by the boundary youâre setting.
Want to level it up a bit or make a point? Instead of making it sound like itâs a personal topic for you, try deploying a little condescension and careful wording to imply that that person is asking a universally inappropriate question. âThatâs a little personal, donât you think?â + the side eye can make a lot of people think twice.
Your mileage may vary on this (some people are just rude forever), but itâs certainly one for the toolbox.

canât do it because im bored and nothing is interesting
canât do it because im overwhelmed and im one slightly dissapointed glance away from crying for the next week
canât do it because this one thing has had my full entire attention for the past three days and i think ive gotten two hours of sleep in that time and my blood has been replaced with coffee
âŞWhy do we always have to phrase it as âmentally ill people shouldnât have gunsâ rather than âdangerous people shouldnât have gunsâ?
Iâm in one of those categories so I see a therapist, take some meds and work patiently on and with my brain.
Other folks *donât* need Zoloft but they *do* like to make violent, credible threats, amass military-grade weapons, kill animals and/or beat women. If more than one person that lives with you has called the police because they are afraid you are going to hurt them, you shouldnât be able to get a gun.
Itâs not about a diagnosis. Lots and lots of us have those, and this conversation doesnât help. Itâs the willingness to hurt and terrorize others that we need to screen for.

âbeing boredâ when you have adhd isnât just âbeing boredâ. itâs your mind going to the darkest places, imagining things that could harm you because this state of being is so unbearable to you. itâs severe depression out of nowhere. itâs desperately hoping for something to happen, something interesting enough to distract you from this hell. but nothing fits the bill. itâs not being convinced that itâll ever end even though it usually does. itâs you living with the knowledge that it just has to end somehow because thereâs no way to predict what your brain will suggest next to escape from it. being bored is painful when you have adhd and i hate it
Itâs vibrating with energy without an outlet. Itâs hurting yourself or breaking things on purpose or accidentally. Itâs clenched teeth and hands. Itâs not being able to sit or stand or lie down without jumping back up to pace around the room. Itâs tears of frustration. Itâs kicking out against anything and everything. Itâs nausea and anger and fear, and it fucking sucks.
