I made AM
Feb-au-ary 1: The amazing digital gala!
I was working on these in January but I was struggling, so now they are my first post for Feb-au-ary.
These 'The Amazing Digital Gala' au designs are by @madisaur. Their artstyle reminds me of storybook illustrations and I highly recommend checking them out!
weeks 11-20 on my weekly poster challenge this year, crazy I've actually managed almost half a year of getting these done. 1-10 here.
if we're gonna compare Caine to AM we've got to do it right

I think some people forget that some literature and some media is meant to be deeply uncomfortable and unsettling. It's meant to make you have a very visceral reaction to it. If you genuinely can't handle these stories then you are under no obligation to consume them but acting as if they have no purpose or as if people don't have a right to tell these stories, stories that often relate to the darkest or most disturbing parts of life, then you should do some introspection.
Iâve read some things that deal in sad/dark/actually depressing and disturbing subject matter. Iâve loved them and the points they make without endorsing the events portrayed.
Itâs always disappointing to get online and see that the conversation is âX thing shouldnât existâ on the grounds that it made somebody feel badly. It was meant to make you feel that way and itâs normal that it did - itâs okay that you stop reading it or donât finish it but I am BEGGING you to consider why it made you uncomfortable and why the author felt the need (if the answer isnât immediately obvious, as it can be). There isnât shame in something putting you off so badly that you shelve it.
The sterilization of reality is a detriment to all who exist within it. To censor stories with painful themes is to erase the reality that such stories are based in some horrific truth and works to erase the reality that many people have endured.
This trend or whatever we want to call it has gotten so bad that I listened to an entire lecture from somebody about how awful a book was and how it shouldnât exist at all, how the author was a terrible person for concocting it and how it hurt people. When I asked what the book was, this person not only could barely recall the name but HAD NEVER READ IT. I bought the book. I read the book. It accomplished its task beautifully and I found it to be a cathartic experience. I also understood how it could make people so uncomfortable and would never judge anybody for setting it down.
Itâs okay not to like something and distance yourself from it. Remember that those rules apply only to you, though, because they speak only to your own psyche.
Periodic reminder that one of the many roles of fiction is microdosing on big scary feelings so you build resilience, empathy, understanding, and defense against the real thing.
Gymnasiums shouldn't exist because they make my muscles sore. Therefore nobody should go to the gym. Exercise is self harm and people who provide exercise facilities are committing violence.
"We need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us. That is my belief."

Model / Avatar / Species Swap
I had originally wanted to do a "Model Swap" where each character still has the same personality, but their avatar/model/species is swapped with another. However, I didn't know who to swap with who so I just did them all.
I made a text adventure game!!! If youâd like to play it
but what if harlow
But hereâs some of the art I did for the game
A bit tomfoolery for sure
I've rarely seen a more validating sentence in my entire life.

Iâm in love! So excited!
hey ao3 can you like give the extra $38k you made from this monthâs funds drive to charity
You know it legally is a charity, right?
If x charity aims for ÂŁ10, but gets ÂŁ15, would you expect then to give back the extra five or give it then to another charity? No. Any extra costs go into the ârainy dayâ fund; sometimes servers crash or break, sometimes false reports are made that require the legal team, sometimes you need to hire coders or what not to implement new features or fix bugs or deal with broken code âŚÂ
The money they aimed for is the bare minimum, which goes towards things like basic server costs and domain names and legal advice and so forth, but they donât just âpocketâ the rest (as people claim). Itâs not a business. It has no advertisements. It needs some ârainy dayâ cash to function.Â
You canât ask a charity to give money to another charity.Â
It needs what it gets to function and improve.Â
kiena-tesedale replied to this post
They donât âpocketâ excess money. They have a publicly accessible budget - waaaay more info than most charities, in fact. In it, you can clearly see where each dollar goes. (Also, you are vastly underestimating either how much traffic AO3 gets or how much servers/hosting costs.) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
In my experience, people who donât work in web design and hosting just have no concept of how heavy a load something like AO3 would have. Not only is the traffic absolutely buck wild, but the quantity of data that archive needs to store is fuckoff crazy. Iâm talking âmore than the library of congressâ crazy. The only reason it doesnât require Netflix levels of data serving is that itâs text based rather than video.
AO3 is in the top 300 websites in the world, and the top 100 in the US. It is the number 2 literature website.
Number 2 in the entire world. JSTOR is 20.
It sees about 6 million people a day. About 250k an hour. Each of those people is loading multiple pages, many are running searches that execute on literally hundreds of potential variables per search. The demands involved are astronomical.
JSTOR, btw, makes 85 million dollars a year.
Itâs 18 ranks below AO3â˛s traffic, and takes in 650 times the amount of money.
But letâs say you think thatâs an unfair comparison. Would you say that the Project Gutenberg Literature Archival Group- another text based archive that handles literature operating outside traditional copyright requirements- is more similar?
Because it sees all of 4% of the traffic that AO3 handles.
Care to guess its budget?
Double that of AO3.
AO3 is doing shit on the kind of shoestring budget that I fully, 100% cannot comprehend. And thatâs just the archival service.
The 130k also pays for the OTWâs legal team, which they use to defend the right of fandom to fucking exist.
Itâs absolutely batshit fucked up that people are fighting to have the OTW defunded and AO3 shut down. They are the only organized group that actually stands directly between fandom- all the art and the fics and the vids and the music and the chats and the memes and everything we love about interactive, transformative work- and an incalculable amount of lawsuits.
This.
Also friendly reminder that this drive to defund AO3 comes directly from censorship and purity culture bullshit. AO3 does good, important work, and I canât believe that the people who should want to see it supported are the people trying to bring it down.
yesterday I saw someoneâs post with thousands of likes where person asked not to donate to ao3, because they have a lot of money and donât now what to do with them.. but did we all forget what happened 6 months ago, where hackers tried to hack the site and how hard these volunteers worked? SO PLEASE donât discourage people. ao3 is literally pure gold site. on this page we love ao3
Guess Iâll start reblogging this every time the donations pop up
honestly. maybe op has seen the light? but this sucker pops up on the regular, so. i find a nice little rage burst clears my sinuses a treat.
we honor, respect, and support ao3 in this house.
AO3 is super important to me. Iâve published in its TW&C journal as well as it being the place where I share all my fics. Itâs a great bastion of fandom. This explanation shows what a stupendous scale theyâre working at on a comparatively shoestring budget.

Confession:
"I really wish that there was a story that was cheaper in diamonds to balance out the expensive ones. I want to see another weird, funny, trashy romp like My Hollywood Story. Just give me a cheap and trashy story that I can chew on when Iâm diamond-poor"
Ayoo just to preempt the inevitable dumb takes weâre about to start seeing;
I am PRO-WOOL
I am PRO-LEATHER
I am PRO-BEES
Fuck the idea of replacing durable, sustainable animal products with cheap, flimsy plastic that doesnât bio-degrade. Agave nectar and other artificial sweeteners are expensive, labor-intensive, and destroy the environment to be farmed.
Do not buy into pernicious marketing campaigns pushed by dickhead organizations trying to stay relevant, like PETA.
âbut the industry-â
listen there is a huge difference between an industry with problems that can be made sustainable and more humane, and an industry that cannot, given current technology, continue to the present degree without destroying our planet
Wool - Contrary to what bullshit mongers like PETA would have you believe, wool is one of the most ethical materials humans have ever worked with. Happy sheep make better wool, experienced shearers seldom nick their sheep, and older sheep produce more wool, meaning its best to keep them alive and treat them well for many years.
Leather - one cow makes SO MUCH leather. One deer makes SO MUCH leather. Well-treated leather lasts almost FOREVER. Even animals with small skins like rabbits, a pair of well oiled rabbit leather gloves will last decades. Every animal usually made into leather is also a meat animal, so itâs more sustainable to get more than one product from a single ethically butchered animal (humane kills make less punctures in the hide!) Leather can be tanned with natural resources like brains and doesnât require treatment with chemicals that seep into the groundwater!
Cotton: Cotton is a fucking plant, it burns. The growing and harvesting of cotton is rather water intensive but it IS possible to sustainably harvest and reuse the water spent in the cleaning process to reduce the ecological footprint of the crop. It burns clean, it cuts clean, itâs sturdy, and there are 1000 ways to weave it to change its properties.
Bees & Honey: yes yes, the european honey bee is an invasive species, we know that. But honey has been cultivated by humans for just about as long as there have been humans, and they 100% choose to be cultivated. Like bees can and will leave if theyâre not treated and maintained well. They understand that humans protect and clean the hives, and often become familiar with their keepers, choosing to walk on and investigate them instead of acting defensive. If animal welfare and consent are your concerns, honeybees arenât the animals to worry about. If you, like me, are worried about native bee species, instead of creating hives you can strip an area of grass and leave an open area of clay and sandy soil to attract mason and digger bees to nest in the spring. They will happily coexist with honey bees as long as you plant the native keystone species the native bees rely on (like indian blanket flower, partridge pea, native violets in my area) as well as the high nectar plants that honeybees prefer (like roses, sunflowers, bee balm and cone flowers). Nature is actually really adaptable and accommodating of the human urge to cultivate plants and animals, and the idea that nature is âdeadâ rather than âneglectedâ is something that corporations want you to believe so you donât oppose them spraying pesticides every 15 feet.
