Character has a PhD: they’re really smart and knowledgable about their field!
Character has 2 PhDs: either they did a dual degree program and are braggy about it, had a life-changing experience after their first degree and pivoted their whole career, or they find the structure of being a PhD student, despite all its stress, more comfortable and familiar than the stress of finding a Real Job and have a very indulgent advisor.
Character has 3 PhDs: who keeps accepting them to PhD programs. Either this person needs psychological help or their department needs to be investigated for its academic standards. Probably both
Character has 4+ PhDs: if they aren’t an undercover vampire or something then no they don’t lol
#this is why martin dubois weirds me out #who let him get phds in physics chemistry AND biology #does he have any industry experience at all
Funny enough this post was prompted by learning this fact about book!DuBois. Looking at Andy Weir saying “Dr. DuBois has three PhDs” straight in the face and going. Dude. No He Doesn’t.
The favorites people are tagging here include Bruce Banner (7 PhDs), Engineer Team Fortress 2 (11 PhDs), and Stanford Pines (12 PhDs), and like, of course that is not how it works, that is not how anything works, but they come from cartoony universes that operate on cartoon logic. Looking at TF2 and going “that’s not how that works” is not the point of it.
Andy Weir is supposedly trying really hard to make everything in his books realistic, or at least plausible. That’s his whole schtick! This is a world meant to be taken seriously! But his aversion to learning/acknowledging how human social institutions work in the name of Not Being Political™ produces some real howlers that are impossible to take seriously. Eva Stratt’s “I can do what I want” permit is the famous one, and the idea that Grace got a personal attack paper petty enough to end his career through peer review really strains credulity to me, but DuBois’s three PhDs in very closely related fields is another. That’s just not how PhD programs work. This is not about any given character’s capability, this is about how PhD programs are not things you just keep adding to like that—once you have one, you go on to do research, write research papers and monographs, not more PhDs. Your PhD already proves you know how to do research! That’s the point of it, you don’t go prove it again, and any subsequent PhD program you apply to will seriously question why exactly you want to! Weir presumably wants to convey that DuBois is both very smart and very accomplished, that Project Hail Mary recruited the best of the best. Instead I look at this and go “this is a fake character and Andy Weir does not know what he’s talking about” and it breaks my suspension of disbelief.
If I was inventing this character and wanted to immediately convey that he was incredibly smart, accomplished, and the best of the best, I’d say DuBois has a dual PhD in biology and chemistry, and Grace recognizes him as the guy who got a MacArthur fellowship after winning the Nobel Prize for Chemistry two years ago. A dual degree, a MacArthur Fellowship, a Nobel Prize, several dozen published papers (or even better, a paper that Grace has cited at some point!), these are the kinds of markers anyone serious would give DuBois that actually convey what I assume Weir was going for, that “three PhDs” does not.
I want to make a tiny point on the "Grace got a personal attack paper petty enough to end his career through peer review". This is entirely possible, not sure the career ending has happened before but its definitely happened enough to ruin people's credibility in their field. I recently got an archaeology degree and there would be papers written back and forth to discredit, disparage, and refute other people's theories and findings, especially in the early 1900s. I can't find the people we went over in my theories class but it got nasty.
I’m not 100% on how the process works, but his peer reviewers were probably colleagues who were just as annoyed with the field but were scared to voice their opinions. He could have essentially been their sacrifice.
It’s not impossible, yeah. Real-life papers criticizing each other’s theories can get pretty strident, and it’s always possible for people to decide they are sick of this dude. The thing is, having a weird idea that disagrees with everyone else in your field—and even getting snarky about it—is not on its own a career-killer. Nobody believes in the Chaco Meridian theory, but Steve Lekson is still a professor and still allowed to write things. Yeah he had 20 years of much more normal work under his belt before he hit everyone with that, which I’m sure helped a lot, but being snarky and prodding the Established Theories is his whole deal and it hasn’t hurt his career. Paulette Steeves has a bunch of academic awards. When Todd Surovell et al. published a bombshell paper claiming Dillehay did everything wrong at Monte Verde and it’s actually not pre-Clovis at all, they weren’t blackballed from academia, they mostly got eyerolls and a lot of annoyed response papers. They still have jobs. Every field has eccentrics and disagreements and people who are frustrated with The Establishment, it wouldn’t be academia if it didn’t. And trust me, “life doesn’t have to be water-based, nor confined to specific temperature ranges” is WAY less controversial in real-life astrobiology than “Monte Verde is only 6,000 years old” or “Chaco Canyon was a state level society whose rulers founded Paquimé” is in archaeology.
So what could possibly have been in that paper that pissed everyone off SO bad they never wanted to work with Grace again, but the journal was still willing to publish it? The most recent big infamous career-killing take in archaeology was “NAGPRA is basically the same as creationism, and handling Indigenous ancestors’ skulls is this white woman’s right”! It’s hard for me to come up with something believable Grace could publish that’s on that level.
(Also, scientists in the first half of the 1900s could do basically whatever the hell they wanted in a way that does not fly today. Grace meanwhile got his PhD in the 2010s. Which is not to say that academic beefs where people go You’re Stupid And Wrong at each other don’t still happen—Surovell vs. Dillehay’s beef got published this year—but you do have to hew to certain standards of professionalism while doing so. Otherwise your peer reviewers will most likely be like dude you can’t say that in an academic article, revise and resubmit.)
This is why I actually do prefer the version where Grace goes “everyone thinks I’m crazy just because I don’t believe there’s anything special about hydrogen and oxygen” and Stratt responds, paraphrased, “no, everyone thinks you’re an asshole because you insulted your colleague at a conference in front of everyone.” Like yeah that’d do it.
(It’s also why I keep beating the drum that the whole backstory feels way more real and resonant if Grace were a woman—or, as @gaudebo has been writing about, Black! Like yeah the same eccentricities and uncollaborative behaviors that tend to get forgiven in white men do not tend to offer women or people of color the same second chances.)
Anyway TL;DR there are ways it could be possible—sympathetic peer reviewers, unprofessional insults against more established colleagues, a journal editor who either got complacent or is courting controversy for attention, everyone deciding this is the last straw regarding a guy they already found annoying—but it’s just… kind of an absurd thing to happen the way Weir seems to describe it happening.
David jumping to all stars as the moment where Shane and Ilya first hooked up is so funny when you think about it. "You had such great chemistry." Like it's funny enough if he thought they hooked up because of their chemistry on the ice. It's even funnier if he thought they fucked to get that chemistry. He assumes they arrived there as enemies and had sex as some kind of really intense get-along shirt.
Omg @horse-on-a-porch I'm submitting your comment for peer review because I'm cackling
So fucking true 😂 this is absolutely something he'd suspect them of doing knowing who they are

your zucchini post sent me back over a decade ago to when i visited finland for the first time and stayed at my partners parents house. their garden was full of the most humungous zucchini i'd ever laid eyes on. my partner came up to me with this giant green sponge in her arms and said "look! it's the size of my dick!"; i remember distinctly being very impressed in that moment. however, what i did not know at the time was that having this bountiful harvest of zucchini meant that we would be eating nothing but zucchini based dishes for the next 7 weeks because there was no space to store it (why no storage, that's a whole other story). after about a week, everyone else in the family left to go to the lake for the rest of the summer and so it was up to my partner and i to eat zucchini day in, day out. it started out novel and fun really: zucchini on toast, stuffed zucchini with meat and mushrooms, zucchini casserole, zucchini and cheese soup! but as time went on, it got weirder and weirder, zucchini with jam on it, then the zucchini itself became marmalade, zucchini baked into a cake, zucchini stuffed with zucchini, zucchini bread, zucchini ice cream, and still more and more zucchini still needed to be consumed before they overippened and spoiled. and non of the neighbours wanted any of it because they too had too much zucchini of their own. needless to say, it was a very visceral experience that affected me in relation to zucchinis for many years afterwards. anyway, i hope the ones you got from your mother-in-law are tasty and you make something delicious with them <3
That's the funny part: I know this. We've been through this before.
Nobody in my boyfriend's family is particularly willing to eat zucchini. They are sick of it to the point of years of build-up. She playfully complains about how the youngest one won't try some of her baked goods out of an alledged fear that there might be zucchini hidden in there. And yet, she keeps planting zucchini. She's delighted to be able to hand them over to me. I am not yet sick of zucchini so I don't mind it just yet.
She also fucking loves foraging for mushrooms, and gets territorial over good spots just like any other finn would. As soon as they're poking out of the ground at the end of the summer she's grabbing the dogs and her daughter and is out of the house getting them, ticks bears and tourists be damned. She can't eat them herself due to allergies, and half of the family can't digest them either, and the other half just doesn't like the texture. She gives them off to friends and family and is delighted to be able to hand them over to me.
I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I'm not complaining. This is the opposite of a problem. Nonetheless I am baffled by it. Rain or shine, in sickness and in health, no matter how inconvenient it would be, she keeps doing this. Purely for the love of the game.
ok is zucchini-related issues like a common theme in Finland, because it was slightly one in my family too; i fucking hate zucchini, my mother seemingly loves it, and like, she kept fucking making foods with zucchini at least she had enough sense to not have the fucking zucchini as like a load-bearing component so i could just avoid eating it but still
My favourite way of zucchini consumption is lemon-zucchini jam on pancakes. I just bought butter and eggs to bake a cake and also make courgette balls with the zucchini I just got. This is the level of get-rid-of-all-this-zucchini we are working on.
This is fascinating! USAmarican here, we occasionally get massive bumper crops of zucchini (Midwest US) when the weather is cooler, and we largely just make them into casseroles. I didn’t know you could put them into bread or make marmalade with them! Next bumper crop I’ll have to put this new knowledge to use!
I have just made (or to be more exact, am currently making) an unreasonable amount of zucchini chocolate cake. The amount is unreasonable because first of all there is no such thing as a reasonable amount of zucchini in a chocolate cake, and second of all the recipe said 5 decilitres of grated zucchini, and the chunk I cut off the giant zucc made 8 decilitres of it. So I decided to just adjust the whole recipe to be 1,6 times bigger. It'll be in the oven for about an hour yet and until then we'll have no idea how badly I fucked up.
why would you say five decilitres instead of half a liter
Because litres wouold be an unhinged way to measure things like flour and sugar and things??

My absolute gospel truth and I'm sorry this is so sappy but--where I'm living, Ilya fully changes his name to Hollander when they get married, like just fully legally changes it. And despite the fact that he continues to use Rozanov professionally ("Just like J. Lo," Ilya says.) everyone who knows them personally obviously knows what Ilya's legal name is and also assume it's a way to kind of stick it to his shitheel father. To this end, and kind of as a joke at first, people start referring to their two-person unit as The Hollanders ("Okay, the Hollanders are in room 508" etc.) but it becomes steadily less and less a joke when neither Shane or Ilya really seems to think of it as one. Ilya especially seems to genuinely love it. He'll say shit like "Oh yes the Hollanders will be there" when asked if they're coming to a barbecue like they live in a postcard. He LOVES to give his name as Ilya Hollander and he LOVES to book reservations under 'Misters Hollander' and he LOVES to say the words 'Shane and Ilya Hollander' out loud with his mouth. I also think that for their last game together in the league Ilya and Shane wear jerseys that say S. Hollander 24 and I. Hollander 81 and it's like. An end of an era type thing. And they frame the jerseys.

the phrase "but i didn't mean to!" in the context of causing harm is kind of redundant to me, because almost nobody means to cause harm. most of us just want to do the right thing. and i don't mean that in a wishy-washy "oh, we're all good deep down" way, i mean that even people who regularly do the most heinous shit imaginable will have a way of justifying it to themselves. the world is not populated by hollywood sadists and psychopaths.
actually i have been thinking about this some more and i want to add on to it:
abuse in caregiving professions (like teaching or nursing) is not solely a result of power dynamics. it's also because people who go into those professions often have a idea of themselves as Good People, and are consequently incapable of recognising or acknowledging when they've hurt someone else. instead, they mentally put 'people who have inconvenienced me' into the Bad People box so they can freely abuse them while maintaining their moral high ground.
i read ross greene a lot when i was working with "difficult" or "behaviourally challenged" children. his refrain is "kids do well if they can" - meaning, in short, that most kids act out only when the demands of a situation exceed their capabilities. punishing them for this is not only cruel but also completely pointless, because they also don't want to be doing what they are doing.
a teacher who believes that there are two categories of people - Good People who Mean Well, and Bad People who Cause Problems on Purpose - is not going to see it that way. they're gonna put themselves in the first category, and the misbehaving kid in the second category. and once they have effectively depersoned the child and placed themselves on a pedestal, the world becomes simple again. because abuse is something that only Bad People do.

Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.
This was discovered as a more effective design during the 2020 US west coast fires.

A better more efficient and odor eliminating homemade air purifier than just taping a 20x20x1 filter to a box fan. Sometimes you need to
If you live on the west coast of the United States, fire season is coming and this is vital.
We’ve been using one, and they’re great. Might try to make the double filter version this year.
theyve been doing a bunch of studies on this during the pandemic and this design is best! 4 filters and a shroud to optimize flow rate.
Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

I’ve personally used both the flat single-filter version AND the triangular two-filter version, and based on subjective personal experience I would argue that the benefits from the second filter, both in terms of airflow and filtration, are absolutely worth it. If you need a makeshift air filter and you have two filters to work with, build the triangle (if not the box, i have no idea how good that one works but based on the info here i presume it’s a fair bit better.)
i want you all to know that there is an artist (carmen papalia) who, after he started using a white cane, assembled a 12 foot long white cane and began using it in downtown vancouver. the length of the cane made it functionally useless as a device and the only purpose it served was making him an obstacle for sighted people. dare i say… 2019 goals
therapist to sighted patient: long cane isnt real and it cant hurt you
carmen papalia:
[id: a dimly lit photo of carmen papalia using his 12 foot “long cane” piece. he walks casually behind it. the cane takes up the majority of both the photograph and the sidewalk.]
Okay I went to a conference where this guy was a keynote and he’s so fucking cool. He’s done a ton of art around disability rights. The twelve-foot cane is really cool, but here are some of my other favourites:
From the series on replacing his cane, this is one where he replaced his cane with a megaphone and would stand at intersections repeating “I can’t see” until somebody would stop and help him cross the street
Another cane replacement, this time replacing it with a high school marching band who would change the music depending on if there was something in the way or not.
A museum intervention where he got people at the MET to go through the museum with their eyes closed and experiencing touching things he’d gotten permission to touch (the floor in this image) and just exploring a visual art museum blind.
The Blind Field Shuffle, in which he has dozens of people form a conga line behind him with their eyes closed and leads them on a blind tour of the city - literally the blind leading the blind.
Wish I could find a better photo, but this is a museum gallery he curated where the works are almost at floor height, making them accessible to children, little people, and people in wheelchairs, but requiring abled people to bend down or sit on the floor in order to see them properly.
In short, this man is amazing and I love his work.
……okay, that last one is my absolute favorite
I took part in the blind field shuffle when he was in buffalo and it was incredible

she's platonic about it but in my opinion, stratt 100% treats grace as her dead wife. she keeps a tacky fox trinket in her coat pocket. there's a framed photo of him in her study . he's grinning goofily in it (bc he's a dork). new guy like: is that her husband? / no, dumbass, it's dr. ryland grace, 1/3 of the hail mary mission. / oh, fuck. were they... ? / yeah, it's unclear. black-and-white montages of grace messing around in high-level meetings play every time stratt contemplates committing more environmental crimes. she looks up at the night sky and vaguely wonders if he's enjoying his space ramen. that's her dead wife. she killed him.
glad to see we're all on the same page
Do you think tumblr will ever learn the difference between “I’m defending this person because I agree with them wholeheartedly and I am also like this person” and “I’m defending this person because your behavior is dangerous and you need to stop”
IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic.
Mob mentality is extremely strong in humans and it’s also extremely dangerous. Mobs don’t think things through. Mobs kill and they destroy and they can’t be reasoned with. Someone trying to calm a mob down isn’t someone defending the ~problematic party~ It’s time we re-learn that.
