You remember tho, the day you learn that she’s getting transferred. You don’t say anything and you wait for her to process. But at the end of the day your laying on her bed your head hanging out of it when she comes back in her hotel room. You don’t ask her how she feels or what she thinks of it cause you think that’s what everybody must do. Instead you say to her that you’re here and you’re ready for whatever she need. You tell her that you’re not sure how everything work, and she smiles at you like it doesn’t matter. So you ask her if she wants to know how you think it happens and when she just lay beside you, her head falling off the bed too and her finger just resting against yours, you think she says yes. So you tell her: “I think all of the teams sent one person dressed all in the team color to sit at a big ass table to talk about the NWSL championship. And everybody was mad at Portland for being to good so they decide that they had to give up one of their best player.” You look at Sonny to see if she’s following and she doesn’t smile yet but her eyes are sparkling a bit so you keep going. “The Thorn guy (it’s only guys cause girls have better things to do) is like: We could give Toby up but she doesn’t want to and we don’t want to mess her chill attitude. We could give Raso up or Purce.. And all the other guys are laughing and saying that they need to give up better, to let them pass the defense line, and the Thorn guy is like: No you can’t ask that come on, don’t say it” You are aware that you’ re talking faster and faster but you can’t wait to hear her laugh. So you take a breath and start again. “The other team are like: Yeah, we want you to give us your best player, we want Sonnett. Then it’s an all boring conversation that we don’t really care about but finally the Thorns have to send you away, thorn guy is fired, cause how could he let you go? That’s the stupidest thing somebody could do!” You hear her laugh and you breath again, you turn your head and take time to enjoy that view for a bit. You still have a thing to say tho, a slight pressure constructing your chest. “Red or purple, soccer player or influencer, I’ll always be there for you Ly, I’m not going anywhere and I’m pretty sure it’s the same for a lot of people. You were great in Portland and you’ll be great in Orlando, cause you’re still you. And really, anybody, family, friends, fans, would be crazy to give you up. I know I’m not. I’ll always be there to cheer for you.” You don’t really want to look at her but you feel her switch next to you, then you feel a weight on your chest and legs tangling with yours. You think she’s shaking a bit so you bring your arms around her and squeeze lightly. You hear her sniff then ask, in a small voice “Pinky promise?” You smile and kiss the top of her head “Pinky promise”
