Movies or movie directors mentioned in Many Years From Now (and other things)
i've made this list like already almost a year ago and i can't remember the exact pages or quotes and stuff and i didn't write it out but as i was reading Many Years From Now i took a notice of some of the movies and movie directors that Miles or Paul mention in this book. and well, i watched some of them. some of these movies i know that Miles was used as a comparison with Paul's lost movies and as them being inspirations for Magical Mystery Tour so it's very interesting. and also, Paul had named some of those that he had watched at Robert Fraser's flat where the showings were being hosted occasionally, or in any other way. Anyway i explained myself here i just want to write a post with all those movies... once again, i don't remember a lot of contexts behind these so i apologize. if there was a director mentioned but not a specific movie i just looked for their most popular work and put it in the list. this is just something for me and others on the most surface understanding of this bullshit ever, i find very fascinating all the people and movies that had influenced Paul and his art and i hope other fans here do to and want to read about this stuff... this is all just from my memory so i apologise for any mistakes. anyway let's get started....
A Movie (1958) directed by Bruce Conner. i watched this one and yeah it's nothing too interesting but pretty cool. 12 minutes of stuff.
Scorpio Rising (1963) directed by Kenneth Anger. a lot to say about Anger but i've watched this one movie even before reading this book or really finding out anything about all this and it blew my mind. it's hard to explain but everyone should watch it. like you can see that Lynch was inspired by this. and funny Lynch was also inspired by Magical Mystery Tour.
Blow-Up (1966) directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. i'm going to be honest i didn't like that one. don't wanna put a lot of my thoughts on this movie here even though there aren't a lot but the story here is that i think the director of this movie later attended the launch party for IT but i think this story was in London Calling. too many books...
Empire (1965) directed by Andy Warhol. yeah i this there's a story behind this one. Robert Fraser showed it to Paul some time after he'd introduced Warhol to him, i think. the story is they all were very high on whatever watching almost 10 hours of Empire State Building. i'm not yet insane enough to experience this so i don't have an opinion on this one. i think Paul said that he kinda regrets watching it.
Bells of Atlantis (1952) directed by Ian Hugo. i don't remember the context for this one so i assume it had something to do with Paul's experimental movies, as well as some others mentioned here. i haven't watched it yet.
Chumlum (1963) directed by Ron Rice.
Heaven and Earth Magic (1962) directed by Harry Smith.
Peyote Queen (1965) directed by Storm De Hirsch. i watched this one, it was just ok. pretty colors and flashing stuff and all that. though i don't remember a lot i don't think i really liked it...
Lost, Lost, Lost (1976) directed by Jonas Mekas.
Skin (1965) directed by Carl Linder.
Dog Star Man (1965) directed by Stan Brakhage. oh this fucking movie. it actually changed my life. this was absolutely crazy. i don't have a lot to say. if you're reading this you just have to watch it.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) directed by Stanley Kubrick. well it's Kubrick not a lot to say this is one awesome movie. i think it was an inspiration for Magical Mystery Tour.
Jean-Luc Godard. i'm not sure which movie of his was mentioned or in it or if it ever was but i've watched already a two of his movies so bc of that i can't name a random one and Yeah. nothing to say here from me. Crazy. i've watched Weekend (1967) and Masculin Féminin (1966) as of now.
Shadows (1958) directed by John Cassavetes.
The Wizard of Oz (1939) directed by Victor Fleming. and yeah i have watched it ofc and honestly i fucking hate this movie for no reason i'm sorry
Chelsea Girls (1966) directed by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey. there's a story to this one too. Paul lent to Robert Fraser one of his projectors for this movie showing bc it uses two projectors, like two movies played at once side by side. and it's one fucking crazy movie i watched it and it changed my life unfortunatly. i loved it there's something wrong with me!
BONUS there's two more movies mentioned in In The Sixties that i just want to talk about too.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Stanley Kubrick. it's like my favourite movie ever and also my favourite book series. the story here is Dan Richter plays one of the characters in this movie and he helped to organize the International Poetry Incarnation at the Royal Albert Hall in 1965. very short recap of the story for those who don't know: the idea for it started at Better Books, which would be a prototype for Indica Bookshop and Gallery, where Barry Miles was working before establishing Indica. anyway this was just a cool little thing as i'm talking with this movie poster hanging on my wall. it had really probably started my obsession with whatever this bullshit is that i'm talking about on this blog. sorry for talking a lot of bullshit if i do so i'm just very passionate or autistic i don't know
The Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954) directed by Kenneth Anger. another Anger movie. it's a lot harder to explain this one but i just wanted to say that this is too crazy beautiful movie. emphasis on crazy. i liked it a lot too.
