John: Geez, Paul, this is worse than the time you dared me to lick the swing set.
Paul: I didnโt dare you to lick the swing set. I said, โJohn, donโt lick the swing set,โ and you said, โdonโt tell me what to do, Paul,โ and then licked the swing set.
yโall ever tear up on the train because you read an excerpt from a Lennon biography about how John kept getting terrible grades and his Aunt Mimi finally took him to see an eye doctor because she refused to believe he wasย โstupidโ like the teachers said he was and when she found out he was dyslexic and finally got him glasses, she started crying because it broke her heart thinking about someone as bright and inquisitive as John struggling to read and being told that it was his fault

I get a little shiver everytime someone calls The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes one of the greatest love stories in English literature because it's so true, even if you see it as romantic or platonic.
I think that's mostly what we mean when we keep asking for the queer adaptation these characters deserve. Because yeah, we're aware there already exists ones in which either of them is canonically queer and has unrequired romantic feelings for the other, and Yes we're aware there exists one in which he basically has a romance with Moriarty, but what I'm left with after finishing the whole canon is a need for the Holmes/Watson relationship to be acknowledged in its intensity, because it's neither a conventional friendship nor is it a conventional romance. It's a life bond that's gotten watered down in recent years in favor of comedy which mostly acknowledges the "bickering like an old married couple" part and neglects the actual canonical and intimate tenderness of it.
No matter which way you look at it, these two have always been in love. Platonic? Romantic? You figure it out. But the fact that their love has been cheapened into something it's not and played up for "drama" is infuriating. You want drama? How about "... believe me to be." How about "You're not coming." "Then you're not going."? How about that fucking scene in The Three Garridebs? How about every small and big thing they have done for each other, and how they are fine as single units, but just overall better as a pair? I hate when they are played up for laughs. Let them be kind to each other without instantly having to compensate for it by being assholes in the next scene. Let them love each other with the same depth they loved each other originally. Let them cry for each other, and worry about each other, and on occasion, bicker with each other. Because let's be honest. It's interesting to watch Watson and Holmes argue, but so much more interesting to see them working together totally in sync.
Don't be sorry for this very wonderful addition!
ive been going out late at night alone to wander about until i find somewhere to spend money needlessly. which i think is a classic sign of a positive mental state
