Source: Fab: An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney by Howard Sounes
Also from Fab:
The next day [after being arrested] Linda called one of her old journalist pals, Blair Sabol, whom she hadnβt spoken to since 1969, being one of the media friends Linda dropped when she and Paul got together. Lindaβs former best girlfriend, the reporter Lillian Roxon, had never forgiven her for this slight, getting her own back on Linda by writing a catty review of Paulβs 1973 TV special, shortly after which Lillian died. No chance of reconciliation there. Linda had long ago made her peace with journalist Danny Fields, but Blair hadnβt heard from Linda until now, and like Lillian she got her own back on Linda in print, writing a caustic article about their reunion in the Village Voice. βNow you must understand the last time I knew Linda was in her groping groupie days [when] Linda was into photographing stars with little or no film in her camera,β Blair later wrote. I remember how impressed I was with her come-on talents as she sat in front of [Warren Beatty] in a mini-skirt and her legs in full wide-angle split for at least six rolls of Ectachrome. Warren ended up ushering me out of his Delmonicoβs suite within 30 minutes and kept Linda for two days. Her pictures turned out to be mediocre to poor, but we became fast friends. When Linda invited Blair to the LA studio where Paul was finishing Venus and Mars, Blair encountered a woman who seemed to have become totally false since her celebrated marriage, speaking in a faux English accent, also affecting a lazy rock βnβ roll manner. βI mean Mahhhhhhn, I cahnβt stand this town,β she said of LA. Linda shrugged off the latest drug bust: βWell, you know it happens to everybody and itβs time-consuming with the lawyers, but weβll get it taken care of.β Then Paul came in, wearing a hideous black satin smoking jacket with a dragon stitched on the back. βLindaβs told me so much about you. Really glad to meet you,β he said politely. Whether he meant it, he made the effort. Blair warmed to Paul, but found Linda a complete phoney whose βmanipulation of Paulβ was βobnoxiousβ; as if she was using him to make herself a star, which Blair seemed to think Linda had always wanted to be, though most people donβt see Linda that way.
So I dunno, maybe Linda had her own reasons for dropping her old New York friends, who, as it turned out, were happy to stab her in the back at the first opportunity.
My personal theory is that with at least some of these relationships, correlation does not equal causation. For example, if jealousy and a desire to keep Linda isolated was the chief motive for Paul's behavior, it's a bit weird that he had zero issues continuing close friendships with men who had slept with Linda (and/or who were carrying a noticeable torch for her, like Neil Young). (Linda also didn't have a universal problem with Paul's exes, as is often posited; see Peggy Lipton's recollection of their interactions in the '80s. She definitely was sensitive about some of them, chiefly Jane Asher, or about people who were Actively Making Passes at Paul.) In fact, many of the people she seemed to ditch "at his behest" were music journalists in whom either or both of them may have felt uncomfortable divulging personal information. Given everything that was going on in the '70s, that may not have been fair to these specific people - though, based on the whole "going off in a snit and writing catty, hurtful articles" response, it sounds... pretty fair, actually, lol - but it's not unreasonable.
I think it's valuable, when trying to find the truth of the "Paul was controlling of Linda vs. Linda was controlling of Paul" conundrum, to recognize the biases of everyone involved. For instance, if Linda stops confiding everything to her gay BFF or whatever after she marries Paul, Danny is naturally going to assume that Paul is the one who, for whatever reason (homophobia!), doesn't like him and doesn't want him talking to Linda. Paul looks like the catalyst, and that's a nice, uncomplicated explanation that doesn't a) tarnish his idealized memories of his friendship with Linda and b) impugn his own behavior (or that of His Friend) in any way. The same is true for any people in Paul's circle who felt marginalized or dumped after he got with Linda. There's also an assumption that, if Linda's not friends with her pre-marriage friends (i.e. ME, to most of these folks), then she's totally isolated and HAS no friends. Like... it's not possible that she has some different friends who a) aren't music journalists and b) don't have this weird antipathy with her husband? Linda had friends. Linda had friends to whom she would complain about Paul when they were having issues. Paul liked these friends and vice versa, even if they were on Linda's "side" in an argument. (Paul's a slightly trickier case, I think, but not because of Linda Controlling Him - more like, he had an extremely hard time trusting friends Due To Recent Events. And, as Pete Townshend reports, his difficulty accepting that people aren't just being chummy with him at industry events, that they legit LIKE him - which it sounds like Linda actually helped him with by getting him to phone people.)
Do I think Paul and Linda's relationship was perfect and 100 healthy in every single regard? No. But I do think this is one of the elements that gets blown out of proportion, partly because the sources (and their potential biases/motivations) often aren't interrogated enough.
I recently read the biography of Jann Wenner, Sticky Fingers, and Danny Fields is a player in that book. It's absolutely correct that the people like Danny, Blair and Lillian Roxon were part of an incestuous, incredibly catty group of music journalists at that time. There was even a notorious incident Danny Fields was involved in, re: a recorded conversation damaging to Jann that ended up distributed. Linda would have been absolutely stupid to not severely monitor her interactions with those people once she started dating the biggest pop star on Earth.
However, Danny's comments to Sounes do contradict his own book about Linda, which portray them as having a lifetime friendship which continued until Linda's death. I can believe Paul was not Danny's friend, but Danny always portrayed Paul as cordial to him.
Lillian Roxon was, by all accounts, in romantic love with Linda and angry that her feelings were not reciprocated. Jann Wenner said in Sticky Fingers that he desperately tried to hook up with Linda (this was pre-Paul and when Jann was a practicing bisexual) but Lillian was so jealous that she actively sabotaged the evening when Jann and Linda were finally going to have sex. Lillian was always trying to cock-block Linda's boyfriends.
βWill you return again? I believe, we can renew, and you can be my brother once again.β
