New chapter posted! The Space Between Us on AO3 (WIP)
"Paul walked to the front of the stage. He would never have admitted he was nervous, but the fact that he started to play the song before he even got to the mic proved that to be a lie. He strummed the chords that had come to him in a dream and sang the words that arrived much later. Buried somewhere in the back of his brain was the origins of the words β he knew vaguely it had something to do with John β but the more functional part of his brain had constructed a narrative that it was about a missed opportunity at love. A universal experience sort of thing.
Around him, the stage lights began to dim until there was nothing but a sole spotlight shining directly on Paul. He squinted at the bright light for a moment, surprised because this hadn't happened during rehearsals. Suddenly, he felt even more alone on the stage, not even able to see the audience. He sped up, singing a bit faster than he'd done in the studio. Standing there all by himself made him feel oddly vulnerable β thank god for the guitar, at least β but also slightly thrilled that the spotlight was just on him. He didn't dwell on either emotion and instead just kept singing.
And then it was over and the lights came back on and his bandmates were back on stage."

"The way John looks at Paul is not how a man looks at a friend, not even a dear friend. Itβs not how a man looks at a brother, and itβs most certainly not how a man looks at someone they donβt even like. John looks at Paul like Paul is the best thing John has ever seen. Like Paul is the centre of Johnβs universe. Like heβs deeply in love.
When John looks at him, Paul looks back. Heβs less obvious about it than John is, because heβs Paul, not John. But Paul looks back at John in photos and interviews, and onstage with those iconic glances at each other over a shared microphone." - Faith Current, Beautiful Possibility

the space between us
It's 1963. Paul McCartney is twenty-one years old and the world is going mad around him.
The touring, the girls, the songs. All of it happening faster than anyone can process.
And then there's John. There's always John.
Turns out Beatlemania is the straightforward part.
the space between us, 1963-1968. a love story. [15 chapters, ongoing / updated weekly]

My mom kept complaining that all of a sudden the Beatles are back and they're fucking everywhere and they're so obnoxious and were practically having an orgy in her garden under a cucumber leaf and that's when I realized she meant spotted cucumber beetles and not Paul McCartney
