noticed there's a type of level design that's basically disappared today

i dunno how to describe it other than "maximalist," where levels were one big stage not divided into screens, but it had a size limit so devs had you go in all kinds of directions so they could fill the stage with as much level design as possible

examples would be earthworm jim, maui mallard in cold shadow, aladdin (genesis), stuff like that. i can't think of any recent games that's had levels structured quite like those games, even in the indie scene. with the absence of hardware limitations there's really no need to maximalize the amount of space used anymore, so this kind of level design is particularly unique because of that

Totally normal for a legitimate for-profit company to refuse to reclaim or stop running their products even after they're no longer being paid to do so. I'm sure it's very normal to just keep running your service for free when your contract's been terminated.
