recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.
It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
I’m no different than you. I don’t long for war over peace, I’m not superhuman to bear the bombs, the famine, the heat, the loss of all sorts of comfort and of our dignity. I’m not more comfortable than you relying on other people’s money, much less asking for it. I can’t make my heart not hurt when my little sister cries from hunger.
Imagine you, a normal person, suddenly having to feed your family of 10 with a single kilo of flour (on a good day) that cost $200. Imagine the stress and humiliation of paying $1,300 a month for a room with no electricity, no water, no windows, that’s infested with mice and cockroaches. Could you bear it? We’re not handling the situation better than you would. We’re breaking apart and we keep living because we must.
So please, if you understand how hard it is, help us. It’s okay if you only have $5 to give and it’s okay if you don’t even have that, if you can only share. Just please don’t ignore us. Imagine being a normal person in these circumstances, and people ignore your calls for help.

like "aphobia isn't real" does not mean "ace/aro people are not pressured into sex, marriage, and other relationships; ace/aro people are not coerced into sex against their will; ace/aro people are not ignored/erased/denied their existence; ace/aro people don't face medical discrimination or pressure to "fix" themselves" - it means "those things are not happening as a result of some social force known as 'aphobia'". the social pressures and violence around sex and sexuality do not arise from an opposition to "asexuality", nor are they remotely unique or even "worse" for asexual people. and again all of this isnt even touching on the fact "asexual" isnt even an agreed upon class of people - if asexual people can have sex, and aromantic people can enter lifelong close relationships with people they might live with and build lives with, how is their material reality different from that of anyone else?
women who don't have sex with their husbands because those husbands are abusive, or bad at sex, or even just unattractive to their wives, are still subjected to medical pressure and abuse to coerce them into having that sex. gay people, famously, undergo things like conversion therapy to pressure and coerce them into having heterosexual sex. post-partum women are given "husband stitches" to make their vulva more pleasurable for a cis man to penetrate. nobody, and i mean nobody, is remotely spared from this systemic violence to coerce you into heterosexual sex - except cis men, sometimes (but even they experience social pressure to have "the right kind of sex" - of course, this pales in comparison to the forces of misogyny and homophobia at work elsewhere!).
we could be speaking about these issues together, and recognizing them all as facets of heterosexism and patriarchy being upheld on everyone, instead of insisting that unless you agree on the word "aphobia", you must have no desire to relieve these pressures on asexual people.
