Rawan in Gaza

It’s not a lie that sugar is expensive. 1kg is $80. Frying oil is $70. That donut was expensive to make, even without the sugar. But it’s okay. Even if it means the adults can’t eat, it’s okay. Soso was happy for a few hours. She’s only 4 years old yet her life is already so hard. She’s not growing properly due to malnutrition and trauma. Her mental health is in shambles, not at all how a child should be. Since birth, two wars have come very close to killing her, so we just want her to be happy.

Please help me make her happy every day. A few days ago, she was the happiest child in the world because she ate an apple for the first time in a year. That won’t happen again because fruits are too expensive, but I swear, she explodes with joy when we buy vegetables too. She is a child with simple dreams.

The situation in northern Gaza is still complicated. Food is still at famine prices and there are on and off rumors that the genocide will start again soon.

Rawan had to borrow money from a relative to pay the bare minimum required to register for a university semester before the end of the application window, and she will need to go to her university and beg them to give her back her scholarship to pay for the rest. She validated the previous semester with stellar grades, by the way! She's extremely hardworking and did that without even having electricity at home, as a software engineering major.

We all understand that there are many more urgent cases, but she and her family still need support. They've been trying so hard to rebuild their lives, but it's been blow after blow after blow…

This is one of the comics I’ve made about Rawan’s family’s life to draw attention to her campaign. Donations have completely stopped, last donation was 12 days ago!

Rawan is 22 years old and lives in northern Gaza with her family. With the crossing closing again, food has gone back to famine prices and they’ve gone back to eating around one meal a day.

Rawan is also one semester away from getting her software engineering degree but doesn’t have the money to register for that last semester. Classes have started days ago and she can’t attend because they’re asking her for $1,000 and she doesn’t have them. It was mostly covered by her scholarship until now, but it only extended until the end of 2025, and she lost a year due to the genocide. She’s looking into every option to find that money but nothing is working.

Please, I don’t know why all of a sudden no one is interested in their fate anymore. They’re still trying to survive, Rawan is still trying to earn her own money. If you see this, please at the very least share this post, and donate if you can 🙏

It’s getting harder and harder to find people willing to support Rawan and her family. Food is still getting more expensive every day in northern Gaza, they still have rent to pay, and Rawan is still looking for a way to get the funds to register for her last semester of university, which has already started.

Please don’t give up on them. Rawan is very determined to find a job and support her family herself, but she needs her degree for that, and her scholarship has been revoked through no fault of her own. She’s been working herself to an early grave just to get this degree, and my heart breaks seeing her face yet another obstacle.

From what we’ve heard, the crossing has opened once a few days ago, butunfortunately, nothing has reached northern Gaza. Rawan has started restricting her food intake to “get used to being hungry again” for when the famine fully returns…

On top of that, a new semester has started at her university, but Rawan hasn’t been able to register yet. The fees are $1,000 and she can’t afford it. She had a scholarship until now, but it has expired. She did explain to them that it’s unfair, because the genocide has made her lose a year, but they just won’t hear her. With life becoming more expensive again, she can’t find anyone willing to help her with this. It’s supposed to be her last semester, she’s very distraught about it.

Please help her finally complete her degree. All she wants is to be able to get a job and support her family with her own money, but her circumstances are against her. Any donation is welcome and sharing these posts helps a lot too 🙏🇵🇸

The crossing is still closed and food (especially fresh/healthy food) is becoming more and more rare in northern Gaza. As a result, prices keep rising and eating a healthy amount of healthy food has once more become a luxury for Rawan and her family.

The family’s efforts are focused on providing actual meals to the youngest sister Soso, whose growth was already stunted by the two famines, and the grandmother. Everyone else has been eating mainly snacks and sweets, which are the cheapest option.

The crossing is still closed and food is disappearing from the markets. Rawan says that the only thing still semi-affordable is unhealthy food like sweets. Vegetables are back at famine prices and meat is simply out of the question. The stress from the situation is tension and fights within Rawan’s family. She’s been miserable these past few days. It’s been hard to reach Rawan these past few days, she says the internet is down on her side. She says the crossing is still closed, prices are as high as they were during the famine, the little meat that reaches the market is expensive and spoiled, and explosions frequently rock the area as Israel seems to be intensifying their demolition operations. Her family is back to eating exclusively canned food and limiting their food intake.

Rawan’s family consists of ten people, including her elderly grandmother and her five-year-old sister, living in northern Gaza without running water, electricity or even windows. As the situation gets worse, they are in need of help again.

The borders of Gaza have been closed again. Rawan says food is already back at “famine prices”. Her family was already only able to buy food day by day, so they barely have any saved up. No one knows how long this situation will last, if it will be long enough to cause another famine or not.

It’s still unclear how the situation is going to evolve in Gaza with everything that’s going on. Prices are fluctuating and everyone is tense.

In the meantime, Rawan is still working hard to get her degree. Since she has no electricity at home, she needs to go to a nearby café and borrow their wifi, and they charge her $50 for the day. This campaign is her only way of affording this.

To be clear : her teachers give her A LOT of assignments on top of various quizzes and midterms. I counted more than ten assignments just for one three credit hour course, and they’re not small assignments either, they all take time. She’s been acing them so far, getting perfect scores on several of them, but many had to be submitted late because she can’t go to the café as often as she needs to. She has to argue with the teachers to accept the late submissions without penalty due to her circumstances.

Please help make it a smoother ride for her. She’s motivated, dedicated and smart, but her circumstances are against her. Any donation is accepted, even if it’s $5 dollars, and sharing these posts also helps a lot 🙏

As soon as the first strikes fell on Iran, prices in Gaza went up like crazy. People are worried that they’ll have to go through another famine. There are reports of Israel considering closing the crossing, which would mean no more entry of food, as well as “expanding operations” in Lebanon and Gaza. It’s happened in Lebanon already. Everyone is stressed.

Rawan is still working hard to get her degree, and for now this campaign is mainly helping her access electricity and wifi, but there’s a big chance that her whole family will have to rely on it for food again soon.

As you can see, the campaign has been struggling a lot lately. Contrary to what people might think, Rawan’s teachers aren’t going any easier on students just because of the circumstances. Even during the worst of the genocide, famine and displacement weren’t a good enough excuse, which is why Rawan failed her first third year despite having previously been a top student.

I’m not sure what to do anymore to get Rawan the support she needs 🥲 I get that she’s not starving anymore (though she’s still not eating nearly enough as she should), but she still very much needs help. Education is a need too. It’s the only way she’ll ever be financially independent, the only way she can move forward in life when everything around her has been destroyed.

I understand that this doesn’t seem like the most urgent fundraiser, but Rawan relies entirely on it to try and complete her degree. She can’t study or hand over assignments if she can’t borrow someone else’s wifi and electricity, and no one offers that to her for free or even for cheap.
