@antoniabishop uses generative AI in her artwork, does not disclose it, and charges for commissions & prints dishonestly
i'm not here to debate about the merits of generative AI in the process of artmaking. if bishop sees no issue with it, i simply ask that she disclose this. if her clients would not have a problem with it, then there should be no problem with transparency.
a few days ago, i sent bishop a message explicating my concerns. she has not responded, and has in fact made more posts advertising sales instead, so i am making this post.
quick disclaimer: i do think bishop's artistic branding is consistent and interesting! i really enjoy her color palette, and i think that's a major part of why her images are so popular. i don't know her process, but i imagine the images aren't generated 100% exclusively. in this post, she posted photos of sketches she's done "a long time ago" that feel very consistent with some of the sketchier figures in her artwork. it's of course possible these photos are also generated, but i would believe that she does some drawing, either in pre-generating or post.
my goal is not harassment, but rather for 1. bishop to be transparent about the amount of her generative AI use, particularly in paid work, and 2. overall, for potential clients to make an informed decision when commissioning an artist / purchasing prints. (and to a lesser, broader degree, for those who would maybe reblog/advertise her work, to do so in an informed way)
she has been upfront about using generative AI art in the past:
when addressed about AI more recently, she is generally evasive about her take (not a crime, just to support that i think her stance is consistent):

and then from 2023 back she has images which were explicitly tagged "ai art". that's fine! i appreciate the honesty
as for the current artwork:
it is always difficult to prove this sort of accusation, and i do generally think we should be cautious in not putting artists on the defense. i am going to present a lot of pieces of evidence: you may not agree with all of them. but i hope that together it becomes clear what i mean.
anatomy:
to be clear, a lot of anatomical mistakes can be human error, but collectively they make a pattern
here the shoe is merging weird with the foot
in the image above, the hand on the right disappears into the skirt, compared to the anatomically correct hand on the left
^ this image is from the paid service she is offering of an illustration accompany a dream interpretation
^ the image above is what first tipped me off. count her legs...... could be interesting if it was on purpose! however, it is part of a series that does not seem to fit with that as a theme, so i don't think it was.
the skeleton and mixed levels of detail here are wild lol - this is a much older one, so i think the models were less consistent.
this one below is particularly egregious to me, as it's a paid commission for an engagement:

it also has a characteristic "halo" that's common in sketchier ai generated images. it's entirely possible to get this from adjustment layers, so it's not proof on its own, but i do see it in many of the images:
as an artist, i sometimes get this effect to make my different textured brushes more cohesive - i wonder if this is her strategy for merging the image and her additions? idk
i could go on. take this or leave this! and antonia, if you're reading: i genuinely do not mean you harm, i just think your clients deserve transparency. i hope you agree.
