watching gen z and millennials make fun of gen alpha has been torturous. "But they're actually stupid" 1. theyre middle schoolers 2. isn't that what older gens said about us? don't you remember being 11?
it truly is just "impulse reaction to cringe <- has not yet unlearned shame"
the cycle continues let me out of here
guys. guys I think we should kill cringe culture
My kids and their friends are Gen Alpha, and they are sweet, sweet kids living though appalling times.
They grew up with the most rigidly binary models of childhood that have existed in my lifetime (girl-glue, anyone?) and been viewed as their earning potential since before they could walk. They have been exploited and abandoned on the internet by their parents, have been exploited on the internet by the algorithm when they were too young to understand it. They are the first large generation of the children of Mommy bloggers, anti-vaxxers, trad wives, and quiverful types.
Theyâve survived a pandemic, and had it cut through their schooling in a way that has been enormously traumatic. They have the smallest outdoor range of any generation to date. In their lifetime, climate change has become violently real, socioeconomic disparity has only increased, reactionary movements have increased, and rights that weâve taken for granted have been rolled back. They are the generation of British trans kids taking their lives on the now-static youth GIC waiting lists. The American trans kids who are watching their very existence become illegal. They are the generation of creative kids whose arts and humanities funding has been cut to the bone. A generation who have grown up watching soft-lit, queer friendly cartoons, walking out in to a world of violent trans and homophobia.
They are depressed, anxious, afraid. Their aspirations are low, their hopes for the future fragile.
They are clever, and creative, and charming, and brave. And they are KIDS.
Be nice to them, theyâre dealing with a lot.
They are clever, and
creative, and charming, and
brave. And they are KIDS.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
If youâre a fellow millennial and making fun of literal kids, blow me, lose my number.
It's incredible how all of the censorship on the modern internet doesn't actually seem to be making society kinder or more wholesome hmm maybe there's a lesson in this
You know how we call things "pseudoscience"... the media analysis that's being done on twitter and tumblr should be pseudohumanities

The linked article
so ive worked in childcare for a bit now. during the pandemic, the place i worked started a day program for kids whose parents needed to return to work. turns out the school district uses memorization and cueing, and when combined with online learning that read all the instructions to them, overwhelmingly the kids aged 5-9 just... couldnt read.
i brought in a bunch of my books from childhood, and we started having one-on-one reading lessons with the littles. then i went out and bought about fifty more books secondhand. first step was covering the pictures so the kids couldnt guess what the words said and had to actually TRY reading them first. second step was making a list of new words for each kid so we could learn about those words, what they meant, and if the kids were old enough, some of the etymology behind them (because if you can recognize latin root words, it's easier to make connections for pronunciation later on eg. unicorn -> universe).
the kids HATED this. reading was previously the easiest class and now it was really, really hard. but reading class had also previously been the most boring class; their books were ten pictures with a single sentence on the opposite page. we got through it by taking turns reading books the kids picked out from my collection- they would read one sentence or paragraph, then i would read the whole page complete with funny voices, then it would be their turn again, etc. it turns out that if kids are motivated to hear the rest of a good story or a lot of information about a topic they love, they're more willing to struggle.
the kids improved so rapidly that i honestly almost cried a few times from how proud i was. one little girl (kindergarten aged) went from being unable to sound out the whole alphabet to reading goodnight moon by herself in two months :'>
all this, though, was NOT my job. my job was to keep the kids on task during their online schooling and prevent them from killing each other or starving. i am not a teacher. the school system was failing these kids to the degree that outside individual reading lessons were necessary, and school systems across the US are still doing this!
if you are a parent or teacher or childcare worker, PLEASE check to see what your kid is being taught. ask to see examples of lesson materials. raise concerns about the importance of phonics over any other reading strategy. join the pta, go to school board meetings, send emails- just make sure your kid is actually learning to read.

hang on I gotta look something up.

Thanks tumblr user i-suggest-vore. I can always count on you for theological literacy wait is there a different reason you like this story
The Lazy Italian Girl (1757) by Jean Baptiste Greuze
god, you take a five minute break and some asshole paints a picture
I bet Jean Baptiste wasn't helping with the washing up or doing the laundry
Teen girls feeling the same for 269 years
Beautiful, you donât HAVE to forgive them. You just canât ridicule them after leaving for being âtaintedâ or âevilâ or whatever the acceptable word is now. Do not punish the behaviour you want to see.
âBut they shouldâve known soonerâ and we shouldâve known sooner that Destiel was never gonna meaningfully happen outside of queerbaiting, whatâs your point?
âI never want them near meâ thatâs fine, but you do realize to insult them, YOU have to get near THEM, right? Wouldnât it be more conducive to what you want to just leave each other alone?
âWhat if one of them tries to approach me?â Then you block them online, or you keep the conversation clinical and polite irl. You do NOT take time out of your day to berate them for their old views. Your mother raised you better than that.
Preserving these tags, they're very correct
love it when peoole draw someone instead of photographing random strangers.

a lot of people dont care about insect biomass collapse bc when they hear we are losing 2.5% of the insect biomass per year they just imagine the cockroach and housefly population decreasing by that much. they dont realize those are among the only ones that will remain unbothered
you can make a little oasis right where you are, and it matters
every year of restoring native plants I see a great increase in the insect populations, and loads of new insects i never saw before (all of them harmless--the insects that are harmful or parasitic on humans are the main ones being unaffected by the decrease in insect populations)
(a large part of) the problem is Plant Sameness. we must restore plant diversity
I started using Head and Shoulders ten years ago for itchy scalp and dandruff, and then for ten years I have not had itchy scalp and dandruff, so I thought âwhy do I still buy shampoo to combat itchy scalp and dandruff when I do not have itchy scalp and dandruff,â so I stopped buying the shampoo for itchy scalp and dandruff and can you guess I have now? Can you predict what currently afflicts me? Itâs alright if you canât because apparently I fuckin couldnât either
Cutting something out of your life because you think you donât need it any more only to realize that it was in fact working as intended and preventing a problem that will return should you stop doing this is a good experiment to run periodically with something small like dandruff shampoo, lest you start to think it would be a good idea to do this with like letâs say public health and the social safety net and vaccines
I had a liver transplant when I was 14 and like six months later I was chatting with my surgeon and he said âthereâs gonna come a time, probably when youâre a teenager, where youâre gonna think, âI feel great, why am I still taking all this medication? I havenât needed it in years.â and youâre gonna want to stop taking all this medication. Guess whatâs gonna happen then? Youâre gonna go into rejection and your liver is gonna start failing, and youâre gonna be dying again, and weâre gonna have to find you another liver. So donât do that.â And I said âwhy the fuck would anyone do that?â and he said âpeople are stupid.â
every once in a while when I get annoyed by a pharmacy or donât wanna get out of bed to do my drugs I think âugh, this is dumb, why do I do this?â and that conversation slams into me like a truck and I remember that I am, in fact, stupid
#you are not immune to the recency bias(via@arrows-for-pens)
Every person on earth needs to read this post. It will make peopleâs lives a lot better and lessen the crises everyone faces in day-to-day lives.
I reblog this every time I see it because I am not immune to the recency bias
this is from the 2000âs btw
Looks like @staff mistakenly censored this comic, which is an ironic and very funny thing to happen
Here it is again. You might want to save it just in case an accident like that happens again
EDIT: HMM. LOOKS LIKE OP WAS BANNED TOO. WHAT A FUNNY. IRONIC. ACCIDENT
we used to get christmas episodes of television. halloween episodes. valentines. we used to get television that felt like part of your life. like it was happening alongside your life. now we mostly get 8 episodes dropping all at once every two years and they don't have time for any of that. i miss characters living alongside us
To Americans who might feel inclined to scoff at Europeans talking about the heat: I know youâve heard this before but maybe youâll listen to an American who spent many years of her life dealing with 115F / 46C summers out in the American west and now lives in France.
THIS IS WORSE. Itâs so much worse.
When you hear âthereâs no ACâ you probably are thinking likeâŚoh thatâs rough, but still Iâve dealt with those temps. My old place didnât have AC. It canât be that bad.
NO. The lack of AC trickles down into every facet of dealing with the heat in a way that slowly and quite literally boils you alive. Itâs not just âoh my apartment is hot this sucksâ, itâs âthere is nowhere you can go to cool down and if you overheat there is no help availableâ
For most thereâs no AC anywhere. Anywhere. The coolest place available is maybe your local church, or a shopping center. Both will kick you out around 8pm, the hottest part of the day. In France and Spain in particular, the time zone is wrong (Hitlerâs faultâweâre still aligned with Germany instead of the UK) and the sun doesnât set until 10-11pm. Heat is still being actively pumped into your living spaces at 10pm.
And the temps do not meaningfully drop overnight. (Which you might expect if youâre from the American west. Southerners do understand this.) Many people live in stone walled buildings that just keep heating up. This is very literally the experience of being in a stone oven. And thereâs no way to drop the temperature. You canât escape it.
If your body temp climbs to unmanageable levels and you start experiencing heat exhaustion, you can call the hospitalâŚmost of which also do not have AC. Iâm not sure how theyâre treating people, I guess with ice packs? Thereâs already been a handful of deaths in my city, and thatâs before any kind of post-wave reporting. These are real time reported deaths.
Anyway I want you to really, really internalize the sense of panic that starts to set in when youâre in these circumstances. The animal brain really starts to go wild when thereâs no options and no escape. Thatâs why Europeans are posting about suffering.
(And noâleaving isnât possible either. Many people donât have cars, and the trains are down due to track over heating. And also donât have AC. These conditions are frankly genuinely scary.)
So, I live in rural Scotland so itâs nothing like so bad, but if you want an idea of what No AC looks like in a stone house?
Yesterday the external temperature was about 27 degrees at the hottest point of the day. Several hours before that, the thermometer in my hall told me it was 28 indoors - the hall is one of the most temperature stable parts of the house. I didnât check it before bed last night, but the sun set a little before 10 oâclock. I suspect it nudged up to 30 at least.
Last night we had a truly stunning thunderstorm, it rained all night and the thunder is still rumbling away just over the hill. When I went outside this morning, the air is light and balmy again.
The temperature in the hall is still at 28 degrees.
same in our modern build, insulated tae fuck flat down in devon - our bedroom is currently hotter than outside the window and it'll take several days of cooler weather to cool it down

shoutout to the words "overmorrow" and "ereyesterday". english losing these words was stupid. "the day after tomorrow" "the day before yesterday" clunky-ass constructions. revolting. i'm bringing overmorrow and ereyesterday back in my idiolect and there is nothing you can do about it
I'm just convinced for the hundredth time that people who claim that they like asshole characters are blatantly lying, they like it when these assholes are coddled like children "You just can't handle complex characters" - the plot can't either lol. What's the point of writing on social media, "hey guys, Character X is a bad person, don't justify them," and then doing the same thing on the show.
