For the Person Who is Learning How to Sew.
Sewing requires patience. You will want to chuck your sewing machine out a window at some point. Sewing requires problem solving skills. When you try to make new things, sometimes you have to figure out yourself how to approach it. It will frustrate you, but when you get it right, it’s extremely satisfying. Sewing requires mistakes. You will mess up. You will scream internally, and maybe even externally, to yourself. The seam ripper is your best friend though, and you will fix your mistakes and learn. Sewing requires acceptance; acceptance of your mistakes and that nothing will ever come out quite as perfect as you want. I still get frustrated to this day with the tiny mistakes I find in my work, but guess what? No one else notices, but you because you are your biggest critic!
In the end though, after hitting all the bumps in the road, there is so much fulfillment in knowing you made something. And when someone goes “Oh my gosh, that’s so cute where did you get that?!” there is nothing more satisfying than saying :
“I made it.”
Reading the “special skills” sections on actors resumes
I was explaining to one of my actors that I had lowered the snaps on the crotch fastener for one of his shirts (we call them diapers, it’s just a strip of fabric that connects the tail of a shirt to the front of it so that they don’t have to mess with tucking a shirt in for quick costume changes, and to ensure that it stays tucked during dance numbers).
So my actor says “yeah that feels a lot better, how did you notice that?”
I reply that I’ve been watching him give himself a full frontal wedgie for a week and if he wasn’t going to ask for an adjustment I was going to make one for him.
He said “Is that a job skill you can put on a resume?”
I say, jokingly of course “Oh yeah, Crotch Comfort Specialist is listed under my Skills section.”
Two weeks later he comes to me and gleefully tells me that he went home and added “Crotch Comfort Specialist” to the Talents section of his resume and that it’s turned out to be a great gauge of how well prospective employers actually read it.
I have no idea what he’ll do if anyone actually asks him about it, but part of me is just proud as can be.

THIS IS WHY YOU WASH YOUR DAMN HANDS AFTER DOING YOUR MAKEUP
AND YOU NEVER DO YOUR MAKEUP IN COSTUME
Me: *hanging an undershirt up that I just finished distressing... pit stains and all!*
Student: *watching me with an aghast, disgusted expression*
Me: ‘What’s wrong?’
Student: ‘I can’t believe that that looks so gross already!’
Me, with eventual realization: ‘It’s all fake... I worked very hard to make this shirt look so nasty.’
Student, not looking wholly convinced: ‘Oh... oooo..... kay....’
