If Gothic Literature was said to have a birthday, it might just be July 9, which marks the birth of both Ann Radcliffe (1764) and Matthew “Monk” Lewis (1775). Radcliffe was responsible for popularizing the genre through such novels as The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian, while Lewis took the genre to its most notorious extremes in his masterpiece, The Monk. Both authors were key figures in the development of what we now think of as the horror genre and still enjoy a continued and passionate readership.
