Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for taking about depression. It is nice to know we're not alone in this. One question: How do you find motivation to do the things you love when it seems like there's none? Thanks
Well, I canāt find that motivation all the time. Some days (rarely, now, since I got medication to treat the chemical imbalance in my brain that gives me depression) I just canāt. I do my best to do smaller things, or break seemingly-impossible tasks into smaller, achievable ones. And even that doesnāt always work.
But I remind myself that Depression Lies, and when Iām having a bad day, I tell the people close to me, like my wife and children, that Iām having a bad day. Leaning on them a little bit helps me get through it.
Another thing I do was inspired by a friend of mine who essentially made a list of things that she liked to do when she wasnāt experiencing anxiety or depression. It goes something like this:
Healthy and rational me likes to be with my firends.
Healthy and rational me doesnāt cancel plans at the last minute because sheās overwhelmed by something.
Healthy and rational me takes good care of herself, eats healthy foods, doesnāt drink excessively, and exercises.
Healthy and rational me doesnāt give up.
Stuff like that. When sheās having a bad day, she can look at the list and remember. It doesnāt always work for me, but it works more often than it doesnāt. Remember that you are not alone, and that the people who love you are there to help you get through the bad days ⦠and the bad days are always temporary.
