Sunday Contingency

listen, everybody watched or read Scott Pilgrim and wondered why Scott was the protagonist instead of Ramona. why anyone would identify with or want to be Scott, not just because the narrative makes it clear that Scott is a crappy dude, but because Ramona was so cool, so sure of herself. so pretty. we all deep down wanted to be like Ramona in some way we couldn’t quite define and for some reason we felt embarrassed or afraid to say it. we all chalked it up to Scott being a loser and Ramona being the cool one that he’s chasing after, but on some level we knew it was more than that, something we were scared to look at too closely for fear of finding that it meant something more about ourselves that we weren’t equipped to deal with, weren’t ready for. but we remembered that feeling, and it stuck inside of us along with all the other feelings just like it that we’d tucked away because we couldn’t think about for too long because it made us uncomfortable.
