I feel like there's this tendency of ppl who dislike jancy or jonathan where they say that his stans overexaggerate the class disparity (or otherwise 'othered' status) between the Byers family and everyone else for sympathy points or sm
and the annoying part there isn't just that they're incorrect, but that in s4/5 the duffers do drop the ball in keeping some of those circumstances in mind, even tho they were well illustrated in s1/2. but this doesn't mean that they don't exist anymore

You just know Joyce worked sick as a dog because she says she's never missed a day, and she had two little kids, an anxiety disorder, and a tremendously stressful life, so she definitely got sick.
And since you knew I was going to bring it around to Jonathan, you know he watched her drag herself to work like that. He was trying to bring her soup and aspirin and take care of her, and she's like aw that's so sweet baby don't worry about me I'm okay with her voice half gone. And he's like well guess that's what you do, that's how it works, so you know he's just the same.
And since she's never home and can't stay with him, he's taking care of himself anyway when he's sick. And he's missing school when Will is sick to take care of him. Because at the very least, he's not going to let Will be sick all by himself. And Joyce is grateful for it, but she remembers leaving Jonathan to fend for himself and wishing she could stay and look after him.

His season 3 outfits my beloved!!! I always misremember him as having suspenders, itβs his camera strap lol. But him as a young professional with an internship, and then the hospital/end of season outfit is simple and cute. Especially all bloody but thatβs not the point.
I donβt see him as being super interested in fashion in the future, very function over form. Heβs always preferred to be behind the camera, after all. But once heβs in NYC, band tees are going to be much easier to come by. I think heβd be really into the underground music scene, and heβd have band merch for bands that no one has ever heard of and theyβre his most loved shirts. And heβll always have a few flannels from home when thereβs a chill in the air. Itβs not all bad memories, after all.

Let's talk Jonathan + neurodivergence. Where do you see Jonathan under that umbrella? What are your thoughts or headcanons that relate to it?

Iβve always viewed him as being autistic. I doubt he wouldβve been evaluated/diagnosed as a kid, and as an adult (in the late 80s/early 90s no less), heβs certainly not seeking out that diagnosis. Iβd say heβs what we now call low support needs, high functioning in outdated terms. Maybe Iβm just projecting, but heβs always struck me as neurodivergent.
Heβs definitely anxious, though in the context of the show, thereβs never a solid moment of reprieve for him. The anxiety when heβs not in the middle of danger shows itself (I think) best in season 4, when he and Argyle are playing junkyard golf. Heβs talking about Nancy and starts talking about how their future kids will hate him like heβs so sure of it, that these theoretical kids that donβt exist already despise him. Heβs high strung, but again, context is so important.
He was set up from a young age to shoulder a lot of weight. By the time season 1 starts, heβs already working, he took an extra shift in the first episode and that money goes to bills.
As far as the undiagnosed autism goes, he avoids crowds, we see him avoiding the cafeteria in the first two seasons, leaving while Nancy and Steve are eating lunch in season 1, and outside the school to eat in season 2. I imagine he gets overwhelmed in loud environments, especially if heβs already uncomfortable. I also see him as fairly touch averse (while also being touch starved, a fun /s combination), with the only real exceptions being Joyce, Will, and Nancy after a little while.
Chronic pain post season 3 (I missed the last discussion, but heβs certainly got back pain and likely ongoing headaches after the hospital fight) doesnβt help with those problems. In Lenora, he seems to only find support through Argyle. His family, Will, Jane, and Joyce, are all dealing with the changes too, and Jonathan isnβt someone to bring up his own struggles, but Argyle is someone he finds himself leaning on. Eventually literally, the two of them becoming close enough that Jonathan can find comfort in touch with him. Argyle listens and asks questions and is never cruel about anything, one of the first genuine friends Jonathan has ever had that isnβt his little brother or girlfriend.
I also imagine he has difficulty with emotional regulation. Heβs quick to frustration and anger and can lash out because of it. When the world isnβt ending and he has just a little more space to breathe, he tries to shut it down rather than feel it. When he knows something will get him worked up, heβll just avoid it entirely. Including reflecting on himself and his relationships. Heβd rather let them stagnate than let himself get upset in a conversation. Maybe because he sees parts of his father (or even Joyce) in that anger and doesnβt want to turn into him. Doesnβt want to be an angry person. So he represses and pushes things down.
Music is a big source of comfort for him (which is why I think he shouldβve had a bigger role at the radio station in season 5. Of all my problems with season 5, I think it was a huge missed opportunity to not have him assisting Robin with broadcasting. He probably wouldnβt have wanted to be the one talking, but he couldβve been in the booth! He shouldβve been her assistant instead, sorry Steve!). We see him using it to connect with Will, going to it when Will is missing, and he has a well loved collection of tapes and records. (And then heβs just not there for the music-heavy plot in season 4, another missed opportunity!!!!!)
Anyway, this is getting very long. But my last point is that Jonathan feels like an outsider, and maybe thatβs because he is one. Being autistic can be isolating, and heβs already got enough going against him in a town like Hawkins. Struggling to connect with his peers, to understand his peers, goes hand in hand with it. He might think heβs doomed to his loneliness, to isolation, and might even posture like he wants it that way, but itβs hard. Heβs not alone though. By the end of season 5, heβs shown to be doing well. Out of Hawkins, finding new passion in filmmaking, friends with the other three young adults (Robin is likely also autistic, though like Jonathan, likely doesnβt have any formal diagnosis. Regardless, I think they might find kinship in each other without fully recognizing thatβs why). I wish it had been explored more, that we couldβve seen more in depth moments with his character, more moments that expanded on his relationships outside of Will and Nancy in canon. But thatβs what fic is for, right lol
Thinking about how Jonathan is completely mischaracterized from the beginning of S5 when Will says that he always makes them late and that he missed the alarm.
When, since S1, we have seen that Jonathan is always awake first (even before Joyce) so that he can make breakfast for his family, and it is implied that he usually wakes Will up for school too. He has clearly always had a sense of responsibility to both his mom and his brother, but especially Will.
Then randomly that instinct goes away in S5 because they moved into the Wheeler's basement and because of a time jump? (A time jump that doesn't even make sense) Like okayyyy

Off the last reblog from @throttlegainwell talking about the Jonathan/Joyce relationship itβs interesting to me how Will would try and fill that gap. In the end he loves both, but I do think heβd take Joyceβs side in something that really hit both hard.
I dunno, I just find the way they wrote the Byers post-season two to be so depressing. That shot from 204 of Jonathan staring at his mother and brother sleeping in his bed, an outsider to their relationship ship, just haunts. I canβt believe theyβd really want us to think thatβs what becomes of the Byers, but itβs hard to see it any other way. Not after the indifference shown towards Jonathan by Joyce in that season.
Depressing shit. Jancy had a breakup scene and I feel legit more hopeful about that relationship than Jonathan/Joyce. It sucks.
I guess they just wanted to prove season one Joyce wrong about how Jonathan is, in the end, alone.

I think Jonathan was always going to have trouble relating to his peers in college (between the supernatural and mundane differences in life experience and his socioeconomic status), but it's interesting that he's canonically a little older than most of his classmates entering school. Not a huge amount, of courseβnot even enough that he's in the nontraditional student age rangeβbut it's a few years at an age of fairly rapid change. So on one hand, it could exacerbate that feeling of difference and make it harder to relate or connect, but on the other hand... he was always going to come across older, more mature, a bit hardened and weathered by life, no matter what age he attended. So maybe it's a built in excuse. And I do think that he's a small fish in a big pond in NYC and not strange or noteworthy among such a massive and eclectic set of people from so many different backgrounds, but among the NYU set? He probably has some mystique.
on the hospital fight (this is more jancy than Jonathan specific but humour me) - I think that compared to some of the other violent scenes in S3, the hospital fight is very nice connective tissue back to the horror foundation that the show started with (but jumped the shark away from w the mall/Russia stuff in s3) which I think jancy in particular are naturally such good vessels for - like the tree scene, the s1 demo fight or the exorcism. like yes those teenagers in love should be running for their lives through a creepy hospital wing for my entertainment! It is extremely fun seeing them be scared but still fighting to protect each other.
in terms of further thinking I would have liked to have anyy of the aftermath explored. Obviously I'd have liked for Jonathan's injuries to have some significance for whumpy reasons (one imagines that there's only so much adrenaline that can get you through). but another aspect I'd like to have seen touched on would be the gravity of jancy having killed tom and bruce? I know that they were flayed so it's not exactly like they killed 2 human beings but is that really something that these two teenagers would internalise? the show isn't concerned with that but I am!Β
furthermore I would be interested to know a) if jancy finished their internships after that or b) if they were concerned that resigning immediately after those guys went missing made them look very suspicious. Considering that Jonathan's family is already the subject of town-wide side-eyeing, I think this probably wouldn't have looked great for him
