Attention Queer Vulva-Owners: Condoms Are Good For You, Too
Condoms were originally designed to cover the penis. But if you don’t have a penis, and neither does your partner, condoms are still your friend. Here’s why condoms should be a part of your sex life.
1. Condoms turn into dental dams lickety split.
First of all, yes, you CAN get an STD from having unprotected oral sex. A dental dam is a barrier that covers your vulva to protect you and your partner from STDs when you’re going downtown. You can turn a regular old condom into one of these magic tools with little-to-no crafting skills. All you need is a pair of scissors. Check out our tutorial and start having safer oral sex.
2. Condoms keep your favorite sex toys neat and clean.
It’s possible to transmit an STD by passing a sex toy back and forth during sex. Luckily, condoms make great covers for dildos, vibrators, and plugs. Put a new condom on every time you or your partner use a toy.
3. You can wear a condom like a glove for safer fingering.
Covering up your hands during manual sex (fingering/fisting/whatever you’re into) can keep bacteria out of your partner’s vagina or anus and prevent cuts from your fingernails. Condoms or latex gloves both work, but condoms get bonus points for already being lubed up.
And there you have it: Safer sex and STD testing are super important no matter what your sexual orientation is. So visit your nearest Planned Parenthood health center for info, testing, and a big pile of condoms.

This is such a good use of gifs!
Get creative! Safety first! Condoms are a cheap option and available most places (Wouldn’t it be great if dental dams were as widespread?). Look for condoms without lube or spermicide--they can be irritating to the genitals--and instead get your own body-safe lube (such as Sliquid, UberLube, or any other silicone-based or water-based lube without glycerine or parabens). However, don’t use oil-based lube with condoms--oil can break down the material of the condom, making it useless as a barrier.

A reader wonders how to deal with the grief of a miscarriage at eight weeks.
TW: miscarriage and abortion
An advice column that I love--S. Bear Bergman gives astounding advice about all sorts of things, but especially about affairs of the heart. This column talks about all kinds of things, including how right-wing pro-life (read: anti-choice) folks use arguments about the definition of what constitutes “life” to pit pro-choice folks against each other. He also advises that being truly pro-choice means recognizing that women can and should be able to make decisions about their bodies and about what is created in their bodies. And about needing time to grieve.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) are no good! If you want medically accurate information about pregnancy, birth, child care, and abortions, do not seek it from CPCs. Seek out your local Planned Parenthood, NAF (National Abortion Federation) provider, or a trusted adult or other sexual health information source.

Animated Anatomy Of The Clitoris from The Huffington Post on Vimeo.
We all need a little more cliteracy in our lives! This short animated clip will help you get acquainted with the typical structure and position of the clitoris, a portion of the female anatomy that often gets left out of the conversation. The clitoris is often the center of pleasure for those with female genitals! Take time to explore how stimulating your clitoris can feel for you.
Everything you'll probably ever need to know about safer sex barriers, like which to use, how to use them, how to get more comfortable with them, and how surprisingly cute they are.

I am currently reading this book, which has been recommended by numerous sex educators and counselors, as well as people who have said it has changed their life! So far it has been a fascinating read, and I hope to be able to write more about the insights I am gaining about sexuality on this blog when I have finished. For now, check it out from your local library, buy it online, or from a local bookstore or feminist sex shop!
Oh Joy Sex Toy is a fantastic comic website written and illustrated by Erika Moen that explores and reviews sex toys and covers the gamut of sexual health topics. It is a fabulous resource for mature audiences who are curious about the different ways people enjoy sexuality, bodies, and TOYS! She is also an advocate for teaching children about sex not just as a reproductive act (i.e., talking about pleasure) and for engaging in consensual practices (http://www.ohjoysextoy.com/consent/). It is one of my favorite creative sex education resources!
Healthy and Safe Sexuality
One of the most important ideas that informs this blog is CONSENT (it's even in the title!). Consent is extremely important when talking about sex and sexuality.
Sex is something that should NOT be controlled, policed, or decided for you by someone other than yourself. That being said, a person can always make the choice to seek out active and continued consent from anyone they are engaging in sexual activity with, including themselves. If consent is not present, the sexual act becomes unhealthy and potentially dangerous. Never engage in sexual activity with someone who has not given you their clear and informed consent, even if you have decided that you want to participate in the sexual act. The same goes for yourself--if you feel uncomfortable about something someone has asked you to do or is making you do, you may not have given consent. You have the right to say no. You have the right to discontinue whatever you are doing or being forced to do. Nonconsensual sexual acts can be uncomfortable at best and extremely traumatizing at worst. Never be the person who is doing that to someone else. If you feel like you are in this kind of situation, seek help immediately. If you have ever been in a situation where you feel you did not give or get consent, please consult one of the resources in the "Get Help" section of the resources page on this blog.
This blog will discuss issues of consent and the consequences of not getting it--including sexual assault and rape. These topics can be very triggering. If you feel triggered or upset at any time, please consult the resources page or a professional counselor. Relying on friends, family, or others in your community for support can also be very helpful.
Sex education cannot be comprehensive without discussing sexual abuse and violence, because these topics help us to understand when sex and sexuality become unhealthy and unsafe. Safe and healthy sex and sexuality are a normal and positive part of the human experience. Let's make sure we can make the distinction and support one another whole-heartedly.
The video that inspired the blog…Al Vernacchio is a sex and health educator who wants to change the way we talk about sex, especially with young people. Changing the metaphor may help change the culture.
Welcome!
The goal of this blog is to explore modern ideas about sexuality, human development, social justice, and education, and to synthesize them in a blog that can be used as a resource for teens, parents, students, teachers, and all kinds of people who wish to know more about human sexuality.
I am a recent graduate from a US college in psychology, with experience in health education, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and gender and sexuality studies. I will rely on the informed opinion of myself and others to create content for this blog and make sure that the information presented here is scientifically and socially valid. Although this blog is informed by personal opinion, it seeks to challenge the status quo and to search out the best resources on sex and sexuality education available.
The top priorities are health, safety, and positivity. I believe in education and the advancement of knowledge; I believe in strong and open communication; I believe that sexuality is a fundamental aspect of the human experience and that everyone has a right to reach their full human potential in all areas of life, including sexuality. The blog is informed by feminism, anti-racism, and social justice concepts.
Some of the topics we will explore are...
Sexual Health and Safety
Sexual Development
The Science of Sex
Relationships
Sex Products
Birth Control and Contraception
Reproductive Rights
Body and Body Image
Mental Health
Self-Love and Masturbation
Sexual Orientation
Gender and Gender Identity
Myths (that need to be de-bunked)
I hope you enjoy the blog! Feel free to consult the resources or message me questions.
