LOVE the idea of the party making their siblings communal. Like Jonathan is everybody’s big brother, before they were old enough to bike alone he took them trick-or-treating and gave them rides to the arcade. He taught Mike how to tie his shoes and he gave Dustin a pep talk the first time a bully called him toothless. And Nancy is everybody’s big sister, she dressed up for their campaigns and encourages them to join clubs in high school. She tutored Lucas in essay writing and El in reading. She volunteers to report on basketball games so she can be there to cheer for Lucas. Erica is everybody’s little sister, she totally followed them around when she was younger and they took turns teaching her how to ride a bike one summer. She liked to play dress up so Will would draw little pictures of her as princesses or witches or whatever and give her cool fun character names (she was pretending to be lady applejack king before she started playing d&d). She was nervous for her first day of middle school so Mike gave her a pep talk about how lame it actually is and so not scary at all. Everyone has had to carry Holly around at one point or another

Something about the way that Will isn’t really in season 1 after the first episode…like he is but he isn’t. He’s motivating the plot but his absence is central to it. We see glimpses of who he was before, through his mom, his brother, a few playful moments with his friends (the scene of him racing dustin for comics stands out to me because it’s really the last moment he’s a Will untouched by the upside down. so like. idk it feels like we don’t actually get to know him until season 2, which is post-upside down will. Like fundamentally changed from the kid he was. Like to be taken away, trapped in another dimension fighting to survive in a world completely empty of comfort or hope or care… and then to have your body taken over against your will and to be used to hurt the people you love… you might learn to live with those things but you can’t ever really come back to exactly who you were or would have been. He’s trying in season 2/3, he’s scrambling to get back to the Will from before but that’s not the will that came back. And it’s like… idk it’s so sad to me that we won’t ever really get to know what he was like before or what he would be like now without having gone through those things. But it’s even more sad that he’s KNOWS that like he’s fully aware of what was lost even if everybody else wants to desperately pretend that everything is okay because getting him back was such a miracle and they risked everything to do it. anyway will is the most interesting and complex character in the show

Lucas mentions like jokingly that Max has broken up with him a few times (which is super normal for like middle school couples) but I’ve just been thinking about the way that (unlike Mike) Lucas’s parents clearly love each other… so like he has this image of working things out and apologizing and fighting but always coming back to each other. But Max’s dad abandoned her, and her mom was in a relationship with a horrible abusive stepfather. She doesn’t know what healthy romantic relationships look like. She knows people leave you and hurt you. So I imagine any time she got too comfortable or too happy with Lucas it scared her, she realized how much he meant to her and how much power to hurt her she was giving him. So I kind of picture those breakups as them having like some really sweet amazing moment, maybe she teaches him how to skateboard and he shows her how to use his slingshot, and she’s having like an amazing day, and then she panics and starts pulling away, she gets a little extra snarky, she starts picking a fight and then breaks up with him out of frustration. And I can totally imagine her sitting at home positive that this time he won’t come back, and good riddance she doesn’t need him (but inside she’s actually terrified he really won’t come back, even though he always does, but what if this time it’s different and she really pushed him away)… but then he does come back, because he’s Lucas, he doesn’t give up on a friend, and he’d never give up on Max. He kind of talks about “working” to win her back but I definitely think Max just put on a show of making him work for it. I think the last time, the real time, the only reason Lucas actually took a step back was because he was trying to give her space and time (something his parents probably sat him down and talked to him about after he was upset that she didn’t want to talk to him after everything at star court)
