you haven’t had a very peaceful life. at every turn, there seems to be a dark presence that just looms. you long a calmer, more innocent time so much that it almost feels like a memory.
the physical pain you feel from fighting so hard and being told that you’re not good enough, and you never will be. that you are unworthy of success, and that you never will be. that your feelings and needs don’t matter to anyone else.
your dad is driving you home from a doctor’s appointment. it didn’t go very well, but neither of you were expecting it to. nonetheless, you are going to enjoy this beautiful fall day. he throws on his favorite CD he burnt of all of his favorite songs back when you were just a kid. listening to them reminds you both of an easier time. he stops to get dunkin donuts: he gets a coffee and gets you a pumpkin donut. you guys take the long way home.
you look back on the songs you listened to in middle school. you’re reminded of vague memories like trying to figure out eyeliner and broken earbuds, when you come across this playlist. you realize, yeah some of the music might have been kind of cringey but a lot of it is actually still really good, and you can appreciate it in a new light now that you are older.
