FIDLAR - Almost Free

I’ve talked many times before how I don’t listen to a lot of modern pop-punk, but I can extend that to alternative and punk. I just don’t listen to a lot of stuff like that, but there are exceptions. I have a policy that I’ll pick up anything that looks cool, or that catches my attention, and that’s what happens usually each time that I go to a thrift store or secondhand store. I always end up finding one or two things that catches my attention, and it may be something I’ve heard of, or something I’ve never heard of, and it just looks cool. That’s what happened a couple weeks back when I found Almost Free, the band’s third album from 2019. I found it at Half Price Books a couple weeks back, and I was surprised to have found something like that. I don’t usually see a lot of punk albums in those types of stores, but I was interested in it.

They’re a band I’ve heard of, but never have actually listened to, so I went into this album with no idea what to expect. Honestly, I don’t know if that was a good or bad thing, because I was thrown completely for a loop. I thought these guys were a punk band, and they are, but this album is every genre you can think of that got thrown into a blender and then thrown up after being eaten. This album has no real defining sound, and each song sounds like it came from a different band, but I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing. This album is pretty dang cool, but it’s incredibly uneven, off the wall, loud, and frankly kind of obnoxious with how many sounds and genres it tries to cram in, so I can see why this album was so divisive when it came out. I did some digging on this album to see what people thought about it, because of how wild and unpredictable, but the general consensus is kind of all over the place.
