i know i say this often but i cannot say it loud enough: people who comment on fics, people who reblog posts and engage with fanworks are the people who generate community and without them fandom would be nowhere, so truly thank you for your presence, you make the world go 'round <3
to celebrate captain america’s birthday, let's throw it back to soft summer days, backyard picnics, and golden hour love stories for the full month of july 🧺☀️
welcome to picnic blanket prompts—a low-pressure, fluff-forward mini writing collab inspired by everything you’d find scattered across a summer picnic blanket 🍉🍓🍋
so grab a spot and come write!
── 💫 HOW IT WORKS
each prompt is based after a picnic/summer item, and is paired with some themes & dialogue ideas—pick one (or more!) and create a fic, drabble, or blurb inspired by it OR take a spin at the wheels to let it decide for you!
── 💌 WHO CAN JOIN
anyone! all pairings, x readers, ships, platonic, oc etc. are welcome (marvel encouraged, but not required!)
── 🏷️ TAG YOUR WORK
#picnic blanket prompts
#cap's birthday collab
#a star spangled summer
(use any of these + tag me so i can read & rb!)
── 🗣️ FAQS
📅 do i have to post on a specific day?
nope! post anytime during the month of july (late entries are always welcome—we’re here for vibes, not deadlines)
🤍 does my work have to be just fluffy?
not at all! fluff, angst, bittersweet, smut—all are welcome just make sure you tag all 18+ content accordingly (NO DDDNE/dark/taboo themes) if you think your fic crosses this line, shoot me a dm!
📝 can i write more than one?
absolutely!! this collab doesn't have any hard limits on entries and has more than 50 prompts and dialogue lines to choose from so if inspiration hits again and again, let it rip!
☀️ what if i don’t finish in time?
you can still post it! this collab is meant to feel like summer, a little loose, a little slow, and always ongoing 🌻
🧺 can i combine prompts?
yes please—some of the best ideas come from mixing them
(think: 🍋 + 🚗 + 🎆 for all the sweet spots)
and now for the drumroll...

Shared days off were your favorite. Busy ones, where you had to run errands or clean or go to some friend's party somewhere, were nice because at least you weren't doing any of those things alone, but days when you and Bob had nothing to do were your favorite. Days when there were no errands or chores or friends on the calendar and you could just exist in the same small place together were your favorite days. They came up rarely, usually once a month, so you savored them as best you could.
Today had been one such day; you'd grocery shopped over the weekend, and Bob had taken time the day before to fix the finicky kitchen sink, leaving today open to whatever you both wanted to do. Which was currently sitting on the couch, explaining your island.
"Isla land?" Bob questioned, maneuvering your islander around the landscape, short pink hair and mermaid costume on.
"Well, I wanted it to be 'Isla Land, the island of Land'...like Manos, the Hands of Fate, but they only give you like ten letters tops," you replied, "oh, say hi to Dizzy, he's my best friend!"
"How do I say hi?"
"Just walk over and then click 'A'." You pointed to the button as he hovered his thumb over the top of it.
Bob was strictly a Nintendo 64 guy, as in he hadn't played video games since he owned a Nintendo 64 as a kid and played Mortal Kombat every day after school with his best friend. The console had been a Christmas present from his grandparents, and he enjoyed it, but he liked board games more. When you'd first started dating, he'd walked you through an extensive reinvention of Risk that he and his friends had created in middle school and that he kept like a relic in a plastic container in his apartment. Now that you lived together, the plastic container had taken up residence in your designated game closet, a hallway closet that had stopped holding coats and started holding all the puzzles and board games you owned. And the Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, and a box of old GameBoys that you had collected through the years.
"You can't reply?" Bob asked as Dizzy told your islander that he'd had a dream about them the night before.
"No," you shook your head, "it's kind of annoying, actually."
"Who's this?" Bob asked as he entered Resident Services.
"The fascist tanuki Tom Nook and his right-hand Isabelle," you said, "I hate them."
"You hate them?" Bob laughed. "When we went to the aquarium, didn't you make me take your picture next to the Tom Nook cut out?"
"That was different! The island is basically my island, and yet, I'm mining fossils for Tom Nook, I have to pay him exorbitant amounts just to expand my inventory, and I basically am forced to do his bidding!" You complained. "Ugh, let's just look for fossils; you'll like that."
"Do they look like real fossils?" Bob selected the shovel, running around the upper level of your island and looking for an X.
"Yeah, there's a whole museum," you replied, shifting in your seat so you were closer to him on the couch, "we should go to a museum."
"You work at a museum," Bob pointed out as he dug up a fossil.
"And?" You asked, "you can never spend too much time at the museum...take the fossil to Blathers and he'll tell you what it is."
"I like that I can just carry a potentially massive fossil in my pocket," Bob replied, "and there's nothing wrong with a museum but you really wanna spend the day off at work?"
"It's not the same, I don't get to just walk around the museum when I'm working...I'm usually like sequestered in a backroom somewhere," you replied.
"Sequestered..." Bob mumbled, "Good word."
"Thanks," you laughed. Ever since Phoenix had bought him the word-a-day calendar last year, he'd been enjoying finding and adding new words to his vocabulary. Sequestered was one you were sure he already knew and used on a frequent basis, but you didn't mind pulling a good word out from the recesses of your brain every once in a while to impress him. "Oh here, it's the island museum," you pointed to the screen as Bob's islander walked under the ruined archway toward the museum.
You'd created a Jurassic Park-esque area along the beach for your museum, dinosaur fossils on display, intermixed with palm trees and vines and ruined pillars. It was the best part of your still-under-construction island.
"I just walk up to it?" He asked.
"Yeah go inside and see Blathers," you instructed, "and you can get coffee from Brewster."
Bob navigated his islander into the museum where Blathers told him that the fossil he'd brought was a piece of amber, which the museum already had and Blathers couldn't possibly add to his personal collection so it was returned to Bob.
"Now what?" He asked, islander standing there staring at Blathers.
"Go back outside and you can put it down so you can see what it looks like if you want," you suggested. "The amber is my favorite fossil here, I've been trying to get two for the outside so I can put them on decorative stands."
"I can see why you spend so much time on this game," Bob laughed, returning to the mini jungle outside the museum.
"Rooster told me this isn't a real game cause you don't actually fight anyone or advance to levels," you replied.
"What does he know, the last time Phoenix played Call of Duty with him he died in the first five minutes," Bob pointed out, dropping the fossil from his pocket and watching a piece of amber appear before him, "that's so cool, it looks like real amber.
"I know, I told you Animal Crossing is the best game ever."

I heard the term LAT (living apart together) in regard to marriage the other day on instagram and honestly that sounds so nice.
Like the woman whose reel I watched had a cute little house by the sea and a dog and she makes fun snack trays for herself everyday and reads on the beach and only sees her partner sometimes and I need that kind of companionship in my life.
i get so emotional every time i think about fanfic culture. it's just so beautiful that people are writing and anonymously posting these thousand-word stories about characters we all love and not even getting any money or public fame from it. it's literally just for the love of the game.
shout out to everyone who participates in fanfic culture, be it reading or writing fanfics. you are contributing to such a lovely thing <3
Writer’s relay is a collaborative writing game spanning over 7 weeks. You can write for any Anthony Mackie, Chris Evans, or Sebastian Stan characters.
Based on your preferences, you will be working in a team of three to write a story. This year the stories have to follow a 2+1 format.
For example - Two times she almost confessed + the one time he did.
You choose a prompt as a team. We will give you a set of prompts to choose from as well.
Timeline
June 20: Sign-ups open
July 2: Sign-ups close
July 6: Prompts Posted
July 10: Matches go out
July 11- July 18: Teams connect and plot
July 18: Send in your writing line-up, and fic masterpost
July 19- Aug 1: First sprint
Aug 2 - Aug 16: Second sprint
Aug 17 - Aug 31: Third sprint
Before sign-ups open, we encourage you to reblog and share this announcement :)
How it works
Sign up and indicate your preferences
We match you up with two other writers.
You will have one week to pick your prompt, brainstorm and plot, and choose the order in which your team will write.
Please let us know your writing line-up before the start of the writing period.
Each member of the team has to contribute a chapter with a minimum of 1000 words and a maximum of 5000.
The writing will go in 2 week sprints. The first person in the line-up will have 2 weeks to write and post their chapter. And then the next person goes, and so on.
You may post before the end of your 2 week sprint if you are ready. Then the next person will have 2 weeks from the day it was posted to write and post their part of the story.
You may continue to chat and work with your teammates during the writing period.
Please see acceptable fanworks guidelines for what is allowed.
Posting
You may post your story on Tumblr or AO3 (recommended)
If you choose to post on Tumblr, one of your team members must create a Masterpost with all your team members tagged as well as stubs for the chapter link before the start of the writing sprint.
If you post on AO3, please make a Tumblr post linking to the fic when the first chapter is posted.
Each chapter gets its own post and please tag us when it is posted along with the next person in your line-up to pass the “baton” to them..
Extensions and Pinch Hits
You may request for an extension as early as 4 days before the end of your sprint. You can get a maximum extension of 7 days. Please communicate this as early as you can.
Life happens and if you need to drop out, that’s totally fine. Please let us know as soon as you can so we can assign a pinch hit writer.
Please do not drop out without communicating with the mods. You will not be allowed to participate in the next writer’s relay or Star and Shield Collective events for a year. You can still participate in the monthly challenges.
If you are assigned as a pinch hit, you will have 2 weeks to write and post the part of fic you’re assigned.

Okay so...I just changed my name back because that fixed all the links and I realized that I would've had to go in and fix like, thousands of links and that felt awful to do so this is easier.
Can we talk about why it’s always so hot out when I go to Pride events? Yesterday I sweated through a parade and today I’m sweating through a street fair!!
I have a fic set in 1991. I need help finding out how to create or find a visual inspiration for my three characters; a mom, a dad and baby who dress up as Ariel, Eric and Flounder for Halloween in NYC. All I can find are modern interpretations and modern ideas. I need to find some vintage looks.
You could try pinterest maybe? I mean as far as costumes/halloween goes I don’t think it’s that different outside of like no phones and people gave way better candy in the 90s lol
I have to share, Magnolia is one of my favorite comfort stories and I come back to reread at least once or twice a year. I thought it was gone until I saw your post about your links. I'm very relieved! Wishing you all the luck on your finals!
Hi! I promise I’ll never take Magnolia down! This means so much to me, that you like it that much and that it’s a comfort story for you, I’m so happy to hear!
Thanks for the well wishes too, I’m done two out of three and the third is the easiest so I’m feeling good about being done everything by tomorrow!
