Back on my slightly political - ish analyzing of Top Gun bullshit, but like. You know. We could probably say something about how in both of Icemav's confrontations on base (about Cougar and after the first Hop) they are positioned the same way. Namely, in a way where Mav's US flag patch is clearly visible, while Ice's is not.

It's just interesting, you know. Very much drives home the point that Mav's supposed to represent that "all-American" guy ("all-American cheerfull burger" to quote the novelization, because I do like that quote). Ice's own shoulder patch is clearly inspired by the flag, but it's not the actual thing and it doesn't stand out as much surrounded by the two others - his American-ness doesn't matter as much, because as I regularly theorize, he moreso represents the Russians/Soviets, the other side of the Cold War.

They stand the same way at the deck after Layton but Mav's flag isn't there anymore, because NOW the part that matters most is that they're shaking hands, that they're on the same side, that they're allies.

Also, if I can get even more unhinged about this (just a teensy bit), I have an even less plausible theory that Mav in those two upper scenes is kinda supposed to represent the whole American military and Ice yelling at him is a metaphor for people hating the military after Vietnam. Because Top Gun DID help rehabilitate its image after the war, and Mav's someone you're meant too root for and empathize with. But this one really shouldn't be taken seriously at all.
