American Pipe Snake aka False Coral Snake (Anilius scytale), family Aniliidae, found across much of South America

This family is monotypic, containing only this species.

This species is considered to be quite primitive in its anatomy.

I wanted to use what ‘reach’ I may have here to share the Carolina Wildlife Center’s urgent plea for donations. If they are unable to raise $75,000 to cover ongoing and future care of their wildlife patients, the center will have to close July 20th, 2026. The services provided by CWC to the community are incredibly valuable, and without them, many wild animals will suffer without the care they need.

This is Money Snake. She only appears every 312 years. 

Multicolored Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima), family Thraupidae, order Passeriformes, endemic to Colombia

Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus a. alleganiensis), family Cryptobranchidae, found in freshwater streams in the eastern US

Fantastic article!! The guys looking for it were fish researchers who saw it one time, knew instantly it was an undescribed species, and then tried for nearly 20 years to find and document it!

It's a type of ghost pipefish, related to seahorses, and it floats around coral reefs looking like a piece of algae and hunting unsuspecting prey

They are, of course, named after Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street!

Later on it the project, they got citizen science involved, and people across the Pacific started reporting sightings of snuffy fish from all over!
