An important tweet
This is such a "common sense" way of putting it. Everybody memorize this for spitting it back out whenever needed.
Never thought I'd have the opportunity to say this again: Reducing women and girls to their vaginas and then forcing them to show those vaginas to strangers is not a feminist ideal.
i think "[sic]" is one of the funniest things of literature. like yeah this guy really wrote it out like that
For the uninitiated, you write [sic]—literally "this" or "so" in latin—to indicate that you haven't altered the wording or spelling. While it can be used to preserve a joke misspelling (aminals) or indicate that you know it looks weird (the Toronto Maple Leafs), it is also the most biting three letters that you can throw at a motherfucker who should know better.
Somebody made an error here and it sure wasn't me (derogatory)
oh ok
“Why would you stop in hell?” has changed my brain chemistry

the current twitter discourse du jour is cervical smear tests for some reason and here is my take: there absolutely is a widespread assumption that if you have a vagina and are over a certain age you'll be habituated to vaginal penetration and this is self-evidently heteronormative and sexist and im honestly amazed that more people don't seem to register it fdkjghfdjk
it's not just an issue w smear tests. was investigated for PCOS not too long ago and when i was referred for an ultrasound absolutely nobody thought to mention that it would be a transvaginal ultrasound. if i hadn't happened to do my own research i would literally have found out on the day of the appointment?? i remain baffled by this
anyway a lot of people on twitter responding to 'actually smear tests are painful for some people' with 'oh well I suppose if you have some kind of medical condition it might be painful' and it's well the thing is people with medical conditions exist in real life
oh the other one is 'well the nurse will be super nice and will make sure you're comfortable and will switch to a smaller speculum if necessary' and i'm like you must know that isn't true. like c'mon. even if all your cervical smear experiences have been positive you must be conscious of the fact that some medical practitioners are assholes about stuff like this. a more helpful statement might be 'your nurse should make sure you're comfortable and if they don't then you don't have to put up with it'.
They are doing this discourse again and as a result I have a couple of working examples of the problem described in the OP:
'speculums open you up less than sex' *loud incorrect buzzer noise* what kind of sex? Not all kinds of sex involve penetration. Why are you assuming that everyone who has a cervix is having penis in vagina sex?
'if you can have penetrative sex you can get basic medical care' ok. If I can't have penetrative sex then what??
'so all these people who are afraid to get a pap smear have never had sex?' yes some adults have never had sex. I don't know what's so unfathomable about that.
anyway so i realise the OP is kind of, mid-argument so here is my actual point best as I can express it:
there is a widespread assumption that if you are an adult with a cervix then you will be having penetrative sex and that, therefore, vaginal penetration in a medical context will be no big deal for you.
this is untrue as a) not everyone is having penetrative sex and b) not everyone who is having penetrative sex finds penetration in a medical context painless and untraumatic.
the result of this is that people for whom cervical smears are significantly painful and/or emotionally distressing are not universally properly accommodated and supported in medical settings.
which is a problem bcos the cervical smear is a very important cancer screening and if a person knows or suspects their medical needs will not be accommodated they might opt not to do it.
You also have people like me who:
-have penetrative sex regularly
-do not have penetrative *vaginal* sex as it is emotionally distressing (dysphoria) and physically painful (intersex)
-cannot physically fit an ultrasound wand intended for children without tearing as a 30 year old adult who is not a virgin and that has had PIV in the past but had to stop due to exactly this problem
It is not possible for me to have this performed while awake without significant trauma to the area itself or without mental distress. My doctors so far have thus declined to perform this exam because of this problem, there is no speculum that will fit that will not cause this problem.
Thankfully I have an upcoming surgery to remove all of that nonsense and my doctor stated she will perform the exam then while I am unconscious just prior to surgery. She removes the uterus and cervix and ovaries thru the vaginal canal anyway to minimize scarring, so she would be up in my business besides. She was initially planning on attempting while I was awake but seems to have decided against it after a visual exam, which tells me what my partners past and present have told me about the "small and atrophied, like a child's that never grew" state which prevents me from being able to access care without pain.
If you ever wondered why they call tattoos and piercings "unprofessional" and "unsophisticated"

You know every show that the premise is like “people find out ghosts/monsters/demons are real and are charged with stopping them” appeal to me way more now as a post-graduate not because I believe in ghosts more or whatever but because can you IMAGINE just being handed a job that you don’t even need to apply for? Like just being told “basically there’s this bad thing and all you do is make sure it doesn’t do what it wants” that’s just customer service baby and I worked that for 6 goddamn years! Just TRY getting past “I have a job to offer you” before I can jump down your throat agreeing.
some idiot with a dumb ghost-hunting name who joined the Cause because they love the paranormal: oh fuck oh shit this is really scary guys I’m having second thoughts
me, who knows that if we run away I have to apply to like, a real actual Jobbe again: wakey wakey demons it’s this or retail so guess who’s got nothing to lose
pros and cons of Swissies in your experience? how did you choose the breed for a service dog
I have been pretty blown away by the temperaments of the berners I've met (for the most part) but didn't want to deal with the hair and grooming requirements, and was lamenting to my friend @molosseraptor about how I hate grooming but wanted a dog with a temperament like a berner and she recommended a swissy, which I had never heard of.
Swissies are really great dogs all around. I find that a lot of people who think they want a lab actually want a swissy- they want a relatively low effort dog that is down for just about anything you recommend but also ok to just chill on your couch or following you around the back yard as you do chores. Active enough to take for a walk or run when you're feeling inspired, happy enough to just hang out if not. Relatively non-combattive and dog-friendly (males can be bad with other male dogs though not guaranteed), good with kids and small animals, will bark at the door but not typically an actual danger to humans.
Really the cons are the size (more difficult to figure out what to do with a dog that can weigh upwards of 150lbs), being prone to neophobia (Sushi is not the exception to the rule here), and some difficulty with potty training as youngsters though most grow up to be just fine as adults (pee rivers........... they pee while walking including inside of your house)
But the rest is all pros. If I still needed a mobility dog I would be working Sushi more consistently and also be considering another when she passes.
@coastalpath
Potty training I'm unsure. Neophobia however yes, I have seen the same problems in berners as swissies. Really it can range from very mild to very major- Sushi is weirded out by things that she feels should not be there and things that she has never seen before- but is also capable of getting over it quickly once she is able to assess that it's fine and not dangerous.
As a teen she would let out a single BOOF at the trash cans on trash day, because they moved from the location where she normally saw them in the garage, and were located instead down on the street for the sanitation crew to pick up. For some reason this was A Big Deal that the trash cans had magically grown legs and walked down the driveway. She would then go back to ignoring them when they relocated back to the garage. She hated the gigantic Uncle Sam statue but was fine with other statues. Afraid of the wacky inflatable arm man but fine with flags and laundry on clothes lines.
These days she's seen a little of everything so she's much more even keel, which was what had impressed me so much about berners, but definitely as a youngster she regarded new things as strange and potentially dangerous. I am strongly suspicious that her confusion and dislike of doors stems from this too- she's seen enough doors to understand that it's not going to hurt her, but she definitely wants to move away from doors and doesn't understand why humans keep touching The Wall That Moves.
Unfortunately I've also seen the other end of the spectrum which creates spooky fear biters, anxiety and sound sensitivity, etc. And I have seen that in berners too, so it's definitely not just swissies. They are basically sibling breeds so it makes sense to me that they share a lot of the same temperament strengths and flaws.
I agree; it makes a lot of sense!! I know enough to know not to make assumptions though, so I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge with me. Thank you!

Not to sound like a broken record but does it make anyone else viscerally angry how we realized in the very recent past that we can successfully eradicate devastating human-specific diseases (smallpox) yet now there's a million people telling you not to vaccinate your kids against measles. I know I know "everyone will not just" but also for real we could never have measles again if everyone would just be cool
No, seriously.
Measles is the 2nd most eradicable disease in humans.
We already eradicated the 1st one.
We eradicated measles' close cousin (rinderpest) in ungulates, including in the wild.
But it's harder to make money off sick cattle than sick children, so capitalism has decided to go back the other way instead.
