Exclamations help us express a range of subtleties from surprise to curiosity! Today let’s learn some of these exclamatory phrases in Korean!~

Lesson One - Sentence Structures

Hello! Welcome to the Grammar lesson, Sentence Structures. Not gonna lie, in my opinion, grammar is probably the hardest part of learning a new language. But that’s just me. It really depends on the person. Today, we are talking about how Korean Sentences are structured. Unfortunately, Korean sentences are NOT structured the same way as English.

Let’s get started.

Identifying Subjects, Objects, Verbs, and Adjectives

Subject = Person, place, noun.

(Ex. I went swimming; She doesn’t know; Birds are good at flying)

~

Object = The thing the verb is acting on.

(Ex. He loves me; I ate a hamburger; We studied Korean)

~

Verb = Action word.

(I ran home; He’s eating a donut; I wrote a letter)

~

Adjective = Description word.

(The house is messy; He is handsome; The ring is shiny)

Comparing English and Korean

~

English:

Subject —> Verb —> Object

(Ex. I eat hamburgers)

~

Korean:

Subject —> Object —> Verb

(Ex. I hamburgers eat)

안녕하세요! Welcome to our fifth Grammar lesson where we’ll be talking about the words 이, 그, 저 and which contexts to say each one in.

Let’s get started!

이

이 = This (near you)

If you are wanting to talk about something that is near you, you would use the word 이 to mean this (here).

Sample Sentence

“이 남자는 한국 사람입니다.” = “This man is Korean.”

이것 = This thing; This item (near you)

If you are talking about an object, you can add the word ‘것’ which can mean a ‘thing’, ‘fact’, or ‘idea’. You wouldn’t say 이것 if you were referring to a person.

Sample Sentence

“이것은 최고의 예술작품이다.” = “This is a supreme work of art.”

그

그 = the/that (near the other person)

You would say 그 if you were referring to something or someone, not near you, but near the person you’re talking to to say ‘the’ or ‘that’.

Sample Sentence

“그들은 그 집을 사느라 돈 좀.” = “They spent quite a sum for that house.”

그것 = the thing/item; that thing/item; that one; it

Once again, you’d add 것 (thing/item) if you were referring to a thing.

Sample Sentence

“그것은 불가능하다.” = “It is out of the question.”

저

저 = That (over there)

You would say 저 if you were talking about something far away from both you and the person you are talking to.

Sample Sentence

“저 사람 누구지?” = “Who’s that?”

저것 = That thing (over there)

You would say 저것 if you were referring to an object or thing.

Sample Sentence

“이것과 저것 중 어떤 것을 원하세요?” = “Which one do you like? This or that?”

1. 그리고: And

It works to connect 2 sentences. 예:

밥을 먹습니다. 그리고 차를 마십니다 (I eat food. And I drink tea)

2. 그러나/그런데/그렇지만/하지만: But / However

It’s used when the 1st sentence and the 2nd sentence have opposite meanings. You can use any of them in your sentences, choose whichever you want. 예: 

비가 옵니다. 그러나 우산이 없습니다 (it’s raining. But/however I don’t have an umbrella)

비가 옵니다. 그런데 우산이 없습니다.

비가 옵니다. 그렇지만 우산이 없습니다.

비가 옵니다. 하지만 우산이 없습니다.

3. 그래서/그러니까: So

It’s used when the 1st sentence is the cause of the 2nd sentence. As in the previous case, use the one you want. 예:

머리가 아픕니다. 그래서 병원에 갑니다 (I have a headache. So I go to the hospital)

머리가 아픕니다. 그러니까 병원에 갑니다.

4. 그러면: Then

It’s used when the 1st sentence is the condition of the 2nd sentence. 예: 

노래를 부릅니다. 그러면 기분이 좋아집니다 (I sing. Then I feel good / I become happy)
