*Today Expression *

“마른 하늘에 날벼락" = Bolt from the blue

- 마른 하늘 means Dry sky which means no water, no humidity, no cloud

- 날벼락 = bolt out of blue

You can say "날벼락’ itself instead of the whole idiom

For example:

- "직장에서 예고없이 해고됐어! 웬 날벼락이야."

This column is about "Why is korean so hard to pronounce"

There are lot of reasons learning other languages is difficult. Top 3 reasons for foreigners to speak Korean is 1) Tongue Position, 2) Shape of lips, 3) Words pronunciation changes by rules.

Following post will specifically deal with the third one, Words pronunciation changes.

* How to use?

대화를 엿듣다.

전화를 엿듣다

나는 아빠와 엄마가 심각한 얘기를 하는 것을 엿들었다.

나는 이웃집에서 싸우는 소리를 매일 엿듣곤 했다.

*Today vocabulary*

TV를 보다 = To watch TV

자전거를 타다 = To ride a bike

버스를 타다 = To get on the bus

잠을 자다 = To sleep

"타다" means to get on, ride.

For example, 택시를 타다 . 배를 타다. 기차를 타다. 차를 타다. Etc.

"보다" means to see, watch, read

* Today vocabulary *

공부하다 / 공부를 하다 = To study

설거지하다 / 설거지를 하다 = To do the dishes

빨래를 널다 = To hang laundry

밥을 먹다 / 식사를 하다 = To have a meal

밥 basically means cooked rice, but it means also a meal due to Korean culture.

* Dialog in Korean 

“수업 끝, 방학 시작이다”

“싹다 조져버리자구!”

“자리가 없어”

“가는 날이 장날이라더니”

* Dialog in English

“Class is over, vacation starts” 

“Let’s kill them all!”

저기 =There, over there

키오스크 = kiosk

주문 = order

주문하시겠어요? = "May I take your order?"

뭐, 무엇 = what

마시다 = drink

고민 = something you thinking about

고민 중이다 = (you are) on the fence

따뜻하다 = warm

차갑다 = cold

시원하다 = cool

미치다 =crazy

* Koreans tend to order hot americano with "따뜻한" but order ice one with "아이스 (Ice)". Additionally short term of ice americano in Korean is "아아 (아이스 아메리카노)"

수저 = a set of chopsticks and a spoon

Cutlery (there is no equivalent Korean voca)

포크 = fork

숟가락 = spoon

젓가락 = chopsticks

칼 = knife

Today Korean vocabulary : Terms of cup

Mug = 머그컵

Cup = 컵, 잔 (컵 is more common)

소주잔 = soju glass

맥주잔 = beer glass

찻잔 = tea cup

계단 = stair

조심하다 = to watch out / be careful

수명 = lifespan

연장 = extension

피씨방 = PC room / PC cafe

카페 = cafe

편의점= convenience store

꼭 그렇지도 않아요 = Not necessary / Not always

보다 = To see (뵙다 is a polite way to say 보다)

같이 = Together

공부하다 = to study

다니다 = to go like routine (usually used for school, church, library etc.)

대학 = University

어디= Where

복잡하다 = Complex , Complicate

* 어디 가는 길이세요? = “Where were you heading to?”

* 저는 _____에서 태어났어요 = “I was born in ______”

Ex) 저는 한국에서 태어났어요 / 저는 호주에서 태어났어요

*(similar expression) 저는 _____에서 자랐어요 = “I have grown up in _____”

Ex) 저는 영국에서 자랐어요 / 저는 터키에서 자랐어요

기차 = Train

버스 = Bus

지하철 = Subway

* How to say ‘get on the train / get on the bus’ ? > ~을(를) 타다

기차를 타다 = to get on the train

버스를 타다 = to get on the bus

* How to say ‘How do I get to ______’? > 어떻게 ~에 가요?

서울역에 어떻게 가요? > How I do get to Seoul station?

집에 어떻게 가요? > How do I get home?

출구 = Exit, way out

나가다 = To go out, to exit

저쪽 = Over there (pointing a place far from where I am)
