I kind of want to know more about Agamemnon and the menace that is little Penelope. All because of his POV in My Love I Kept You Well when he caught her spying on him 😭
She contributes heavily to my girl dad!Agamemnon agenda.
That whole bit was so funny to write because Agamemnon is a grown ass man with severe anxiety and paranoia in his late 20s-early 30s (idr what I hc his age as atm), and Penelope is this tiny 5-6 year old trying to spy on him, the mental image of it was just so funny to me 😭😭
Penelope and Agamemnon's relationship is extremely close and familial, and she is protective of him (like in a hand with no lines when she defends him to Odysseus even though she knows he's joking) as she is of any member of her family because of how young she was when the Atredai came into her life – for her they've always been there.
She views them as family – Agamemnon more so than Menelaus because he marries Clytemnestra early on and so as far as Penelope can remember clearly he's always been her elder cousin brother by marriage, and is dear to her like Castor and Pollux.
Menelaus and her have a more friendly rivalry type relationship – he's far more close in age to her, and is actively taking Helen's attention away from her (playing into childhood sweethearts Menelaus x Helen). one of my favourite bits I like to write is penelope going "Helen and Odysseus both love me more than they love you!" whenever Menelaus annoys her (I also hc Penelope x Helen like I do odydio during the war so it flows well~). essentially Menelaus and Penelope have the same type.
I feel like I've digressed from the point, back to Agamemnon and Penelope! she's Agamemnon's test run at playing father before Iphigenia – she and Iphigenia have the same age gap as Hermione and Telemachus – and so both of them are very fond of each other, Agamemnon is as protective of her as he is of Clytemnestra, Anaxibia, Helen or any of his daughters, despite the distance in their relation (cousins by marriage).
Agamemnon also plays a very important role in Penelope's marriage discussions and the like – in the end he's the one to push for Odysseus and vouch for him to Icarius and his sons. He's there for Penelope's marriage, and then before the departure to Troy, he's one of the few people Penelope allows to hold Telemachus.
Their relationship gives Penelope room to be more nuanced and upset about Agamemnon's death at Clytemnestra's hand. Orestes and Electra' murder of Clytemnestra further complicates this. Unlike Tyndareus and Perileos (her elder brother) she is unable to pick a side because she's much younger and loves both Clytemnestra and Agamemnon equally – it's like choosing between her elder sister and elder brother and she just can't do that.
(in the cousins fic, which has a lot of Penelope & Electra, Chrysothemis, Orestes interactions – she talks to them and tells them stories about both their parents: Clytemnestra AND Agamemnon, in an attempt to humanise the parents in their children's eyes)
I've probably got more, but this is all I have from the top of my head at the moment. 🩷
