tumblr users love reading. you literally stopped for this post just because it has words in it
this is one of my favorite bits about tumblr
the users seem to actually prefer text posts to anything else, and treat it as a chore to play a video especially with sound

So because I grew up in the 2000s and 2010s, I remember being asked to debate gay marriage in my RMPS (Religious, Moral, and Philosophical Studies) class and it always seemed fucking weird to me being positioned next to topics like abortion or euthanasia because - like - there were arguments against or for that made logical sense to me as a pre-to-early teen even if I didn’t agree with them (pro choice, anti euthanasia (complicated feelings) btw) but gay marriage?
As a twelve year old:
Pro: “If we allow this two adults who love each other can have legal protections for their marriage” ok, great, yeah, don’t see why we’re even talking about this. Against: “But God said -“ why the fuck does he get a say? God also says I’d be condemned and going to hell/purgatory because I’m half-Catholic, half-Protestant all-unbaptised as a baby so why are we taking this invisible man’s view on this?
Anyway, I thought it was stupid then and I think it’s stupid now.
(Also we did Buddhism every single year. I’m not kidding, I swear every SINGLE year was Buddhism so I think I was more confident discussing that than Christianity by fourteen)
Before I became what I'd call a 'proper ally', I was an 'ally-lite' and by that I mean I was an obnoxious 14 year old atheist who joined the RMPS debating club at lunch specifically to wind up the diehard anti-gay marriage religious people who'd attend.
Every year the S3 RMPS class in my school did a mock wedding and every year students campaigned for it to be a gay marriage (pre legalisation) and every year the teachers said no
gaguin is pure evil but im afraid his art bangs 😭
i knowwww his work is beautiful and it pisses me off because he was just such a fundamentally abhorrent person. one of my favourite paintings of all time is amrita sher-gil's self portrait as tahitian (1934) which is a critique of gaugin's depictions of tahitian women and girls (and it was known in europe in his time that he had a pattern of sexually assaulting and abusing women both in europe and in the americas) that acknowledges his artistic influence on her work but is critical of his racism and misogyny as she depicts herself as a brown woman in the self-portrait like the tahitian women gaugin painted, identifying herself with them and turning the colonial white male gaze (nonwhite women's bodies as things to be bought and consumed and traded like cultural objects) back upon itself in the european man's shadow behind her and the east asian panel she stands in front of (chinoiserie and japonisme being popular fads in france in this era)
it reminds me of faith ringgold's later commentary on picasso and his appropriation of african masks in his work isolated from their cultural context / putting black people and their bodies back into the work and placing the masks back into their contexts while acknowledging his influence on her as an artist
the paintings for reference:
two tahitian women by gaugin (1899) and self portrait as tahitian by amrita sher-gil (1934)
les demoiselles d'avignon by picasso (1907) and picasso's studio by faith ringgold (1991)

The trail up to the summit was covered in wild blackberries that were just turning ripe. We stopped and ate for a while before continuing the climb.

no one cares that you shave your legs because of sensory issues shut the fuck up forever
really galling amount of people misinterpreting this post so i'd like to clarify. i'm saying that when discussions about patriarchal beauty standards and the way women are heavily shamed and coerced into eschewing their own natural state of being (hairy) are occurring, it is unhelpful (AT BEST) to interrupt and say that the reason YOU remove the hair from your body is because of sensory issues. that's not what we're talking about. stop asking for validation for doing something that society at large wants you to do. stop derailing the conversation because you feel uncomfortable about being made aware that you, for whatever reason it is, adhere to harmful, unfair and ridiculous beauty standards. you're stepping into the middle of an important conversation that needs to be had and making it all about you. shut the fuck up forever.
also quite frankly i think a lot less people would experience sensory issues if they let their hair grow out so that it isn't bristly and rough and irritating. and i cannot help but wonder why these sensory issues aren't as predominant in men. maybe you're uncomfortable with the hair on your body because you've been taught to be uncomfortable with it. just a thought.
If I keep practicing I might even be a person soon

"there's no ethical consumption under capitalism" so consume less!!!!!
my advice for women is eat more, shave less, and do whatever the fuck you want
Don’t let your empathy rob people of experiencing the consequences of their actions.
