the use of this definition is pointless in this conversation because you know exactly what I’m talking about and are purposely choosing to ignore it. But that’s kind of besides the point I suppose. Anyway, I looked it up. It says this:
Pt: Characteristics of Paraphilic Disorders
Most people with atypical sexual interests do not have a mental disorder. To be diagnosed with a para- philic disorder, DSM-5 requires that people with these interests:
feel personal distress about their interest, not merely distress resulting from society’s disapproval; or
have a sexual desire or behavior that involves another person’s psychological distress, injury, or death, or a desire for sexual behaviors involving unwilling persons or persons unable to give legal consent.
so yes “distress” can classify a paraphilic disorder, but a sexual desire involving non-consent (aka sexual desire for kids, Animals, and dead bodies) also classifies it. At least in the DSM source that I could find, which I am willing to admit isn’t incredibly recent (2013) however this source from 2025 claims that the DSM defines one of the criteria for pedophilic disorders as “The patient reports recurrent and intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children…; symptoms must be present for at least 6 months” (with very similar definitions for each respective paraphilia; I chose this one because I felt it was the most relevant.) Notice that the definition also includes FANTASIES, AKA thoughts.
(also, MADIR? What? MADIR pedophile?? I’d like if you could explain this because I couldn’t find that anywhere even when I searched on tumblr for it /gen)
This next part is kind of nitpicky, and I apologize for that but I can’t not address it, but “if it causes marked distress to the individual or has been acted on with unconsenting beings”…. Something only being a disorder if it has been acted upon already, is, obviously not correct? Extreme actions like rape happen as a result of untreated disorders (in this case, not in the case of some misogynistic man doing it cause he can or something), it doesn’t just happen randomly and then you’re disabled because you did it? Again that was nitpicky af so I’m sorry about that…
and, things that are “purely thoughts” CAN hurt people and have an effect on them. Because like all things we see, thoughts affect our emotions and influence us, especially if they are involuntary because then you have no control over them. We act based on our thoughts and emotions. For people with intrusive thoughts, they aren’t just passing thoughts that you can let the wind carry away, they stick there and fester and fester and grow worse and convince you all the worst things about yourself. Thoughts can be harmful because they can cause actions, and because they can significantly worsen your mental state (intrusive thoughts mainly being the second one, unless they get extremely bad, which is rare). If opinions can form from thoughts, then thoughts can affect us. This includes opinions about ourselves.
What I said about OCD and PTSD were examples. Here’s what the source you linked in that paragraph says can be sources: “
Anxiety or early emotional trauma interferes with normal psychosexual development.
The standard pattern of arousal is replaced by another pattern, sometimes through early exposure to highly charged sexual experiences that reinforce the person’s unusual experience of sexual pleasure.
The pattern of sexual arousal often acquires symbolic and conditioning elements (eg, a fetish symbolizes the object of arousal but may have been chosen because the fetish was accidentally associated with sexual curiosity, desire, and excitement).
It is controversial whether all paraphilic development results from these psychodynamic processes, and some evidence of altered brain functioning and functional anatomy is present in some paraphilias (eg, pedophilia) “ (btw a psychodynamic process is basically how an unconscious event or early childhood experience affects behavior and stuff for anyone reading, I had to look that one up lol)
The source you used literally sites anxiety and trauma, early exposure to sexually charged experiences, and sexual conditioning, and describes them as psychodynamic processes? Which doesn’t really dismantle my point at all in my opinion? I guess I could be wrong maybe or maybe I just wasn’t clear enough that they were examples. However I stand by my point that attraction to rape isn’t normal.
And obviously, utilizing these definitions, not all paraphilias are harmful, since they do not include rape. As for not addressing the rest of my points, not all of them are opinion based (such as the appropriation of the phrase “thought crime” and the fact that actions are not thought crimes) I just think (no offense really) that you just didn’t want to address them. And if that’s the case just don’t say anything about it. Cherry-picking points on tumblr is something literally everyone I’ve ever seen do. So whatever. You might’ve just missed it. Just don’t say I’m basing it on opinion. Also sorry this was so god damn long
