Suddenly having 50 moving eyes can make you disoriented and barfy and the adjustment period sucks ass

It takes both more and less time than you’d think to figure out what the structure as a whole looks like and where those eyes ARE

After you get used to it the entirety of the structure itself and all of the eyes you can see from feels like an extension of your nervous system in a very bizarre way. Like I have dreams now from the perspective of A Building and I’m not sure how to describe that.

On my COMFORTABLE system, the one I spent the longest time on, I never had to think about what code I needed to punch in. If I needed to watch a specific person, I could follow them all over the site without thinking about it.

Now at a different location, all the manual equipment and codes and lag and resolution are different, and it feels like going from playing the piano to driving stick shift on the left side of the road with my feet

there are several followup questions

Is the sex an activity comprehensible to humans, that the human doesn't experience as sexual? E.g. sex is some kind of elaborate ritual that involves walking behind a waterfall 3 times with a sacred flame and then whacking each other with pool noodles. In that case, it's a matter of whether or not the alien discloses that it's a sex thing.

Or, is it an activity that literally can't be explained to the human beforehand because there is no human analog for it? In this case, the human can't consent to the activity because they can't comprehend what it is.

I think it could be further subdivided based upon whether the problem is an inability for the alien to explain/communicate the activity itself, or an inability for the alien to explain/communicate what the activity means.

Wait, is that a further subdivision, or did I just say the same thing twice?

I mean okay, I think "inability to explain/communicate what the activity means" might refer to a couple things as well: either the inability to communicate that the thing is a sex thing from the alien's POV, or the inability to explain/communicate what it will or might feel like from the human's POV.

The first one would be like the pool noodle situation above, but the second one would be like, something incomprehensible happens that is experienced as intimate or potentially violating.

Forests are sacred things. As humans, many cultures have grown up side by to side our local forests, creating an extensive connection we hold to the wilderness, whether it be the biodiverse rainforests of the Americas, or the twisting wetlands of the United Kingdom. Despite how much of our history is tied to the woods, many of us now grow up completely detached to the environments that still find their place in our everyday life.

I love worldbuilding forests. The forest is a liminal space. It is the entryway to the world of fairies, the dark and mysterious home to the wolves of old fairytales, and a source of life to Native American tribes that looked upon the stars and told stories to one another with the forest animals as their characters.

To this day we rely on forests all around the world. Despite the fact, that they're diminishing in territory, without the forests our planet would die, depriving itself of oxygen. We would have no paper and no wood. We would lose a variety of food sources. We would lose precious shade that protects our dirt. We would lose the anchors that keep our waterline cities from flooding.

These are things I think of when creating a fantasy forest, because I am possibly creating the source of life to a civilization, or the stage to a great story.

A Source For Everything

Compared to certain sections of deserts, mountains, and plains, the forest has more unique resources to human needs. Rivers, bayous, lakes, springs, and wetlands provide water. Trees provide a versatile material. Berries, fruit, herbs, and even certain roots provide forgeables. Lots of animals provide food (or even show potential for domestication). The forest canopy provides shelter, although not perfect.
