The four tongue heights in the unrounded front series are a serious obsta- cle to any binary vowel feature system and serve to make Danish an often quoted example in discussions of binary versus scalar features, cf Fischer- Jørgensen (1975, pp. 220 ff) and her references, Ladefoged (1967), Lass (1984, p. 104 ff) and Rischel (1968). But worse is to come!
