Spectacled bear/Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus)

-VULNERABLE-

Native to the Andes Mountain, spectacled bears are called by natives/locals Jukumari, Ukumari, or ukuku, which roughly translates to "hole bear”! These names all make references to the bears’ unique markings on their face/chest. Ironically, they also happen to have poor eyesight…I choose this one for Combeferre because of the popular hc of him wearing glasses!

American Black Bear (Ursus americanus)

-LEAST CONCERN-

Black bears are endemic to North America and are the smallest bear species in the continent. They’re known for their ability to learn certain tasks very quickly, as fast as domestic dogs! Black bears are also pretty dexterous and are capable of opening door latches??? I love them. I chose this one for Courfeyrac based purely on vibes.

Eurasian Brown Bear (Ursus arctos arctos)

-LEAST CONCERN-

Eurasian brown bear is the most common subspecies of brown bears and it is found in most of Eurasia. More specifically, Enjolras would be a bear from the Pyrenees! Since 1996, France started a reintroduction program in the mountain range in an attempt to save the brown bear population. If you want to learn more about this population of bear, I invite you to check out the Pays de L’Ours website! Overall, I chose this one for Enjolras due to the many activists who are working to preserve the species in the Pyrenees and because they can be found in France. Just don’t tell him brown bears were considered the "king of beasts” in Europe before Christianity…

Sun Bear/Beruang Madu (Helarctos malayanus)

-VULNERABLE-

Found in the tropical forest of South Asia, it is the smallest bear species! They are named sun bears in reference to their orange/yellow chest patch. Additionally, their fur is VERY short. I chose this one for Bossuet due its unique morphology which makes it look a bit awkward (I say this lovingly).

Himalayan brown bear (Ursus actors isabellinus)

-CRITICALLY ENDANGERED in Pakistan- 

Himalayan brown bear is a subspecies of brown bear found in western Himalayas. They have a distinctive appearance due to their fur ranging from sandy to reddish-brown. They can be found in Pakistan, India, and Nepal. I chose this one for Joly because I hc him as Pakistani!

Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis)

-THREATENED in the US - ENDANGERED in Canada-

Grizzlies are a subspecies of brown bear found in North America. They are one of the largest bear (with an average total length between 198cm and 240 cm). In a lot of Native Americans’ culture grizzly bear are viewed with a mix of awe and fear. Naturalist George Ord formally classified the subspecies as U.horribilis for its character… I think this one is self explanatory.

Polar bear (Ursus maritimus)

-VULNERABLE -

Native to the Arctic and nearby territories, the polar bear is the largest species of bear! Compared to brown bears, this species has a more slander build. Fun fact: polar bears actually have black skin, and their fur is more translucent than white! This one is also purely based on vibes.

Cinnamon Bear (Ursus americanus cinnamomum)

Cinnamon bear is a subspecies of the American black bear. Named after its red-brown fur, this bear subspecies is mostly found in the US. I chose this one for Jehan because of its beautiful and unique colour.
