compilation
here’s a couple more
new additions
new one hot off the press
via rosecrystal but these are too good not to add
thank you oli for your humble contribution
unbelievable that i’ve yet to add this
good news i found a new addition
ive noticed this funny narrative surrounding the “people pleaser” that insinuates people pleasers are passive martyrs and their problem is solely that they don’t stand up for themselves, automatically making anyone who can and does a villain. But in my experience a people pleaser is often just synonymous with a lack of self knowledge and therefore a lack of self respect which means they also don’t respect others because if they did then honest communication would not be seen as a task that they are forced into. Labeling yourself as a people pleaser is perpetuated victimhood and there is nothing i dislike more than a person who pretends they are helpless. I hate it on a political, emotional, and personal level.
who do you have to hump to get a funko pop of Chris Pearson around here

They will never make another fictional character like Chris Pearson
We dont see it too much (if at all you just gotta read between the lines ...) but I know that Chris has access to this sort of dull depressed heavy foggy greyness that is morbid and disenchanted, that sort of state that only pushovers / people with chronically breached boundaries can access. Sometimes he's sweet and sunshine and happy to help . Other times it's as if he's smoking a cigarette and everything is black and white and he hates everyone. In Chris's case however his sunshine is such a strong pillar of his self-image that when he does get into those moods he represses it hardcore which of course suppresses his vitality even more . He wont even listen to himself when his body and mind are sending messages that something is wrong . He is so fucked . Very realistic show
This show has me in a vice grip.

I like Dan Vs a lot but you really cant get into it too much. Or you'll get stuck on things and start overlooking things. I really enjoy it for the semi-shitty 2011 animation it is, I like catching when the pacing is awkward and when they didnt really know what to do with the visuals, I know that the creators were new to being showrunners (for a children's cartoon no less) and it shows and I find that endearing and inspiring. I like how Chris Pearson wrote a lot of the episodes himself, including the two imposter episodes. It makes me feel a sort of yearning but also a second-hand pride. The writing is surprisingly clever a LOT of the time, I love the direction the show takes with the chatacter relations (which does feel different depending on the unique voice of the writer, which you can feel changing from episode to episode), and it's remarkable how they made a realistic-but-fantastical setting feel not only possible but inconsequential. Sometimes somebody amazing is on storyboards and the expressions and gestures become so beautiful, I'm in awe about that sort of thing.
But I really cant be thinking about the chatacters when I walk away becasue that's when I start missing things ... it's fine natural and common to use existing characters to discover craft and express your own story/self-expression, but you pay a cost.
For example, ever since I first started watching I really liked the chatacter of Chris. I'm much more inclined to characters like Dan, and I've worked a lot with them, and Dan himself is very convenient as an archetype - all the consequence in one inconsequential dark comedy, it's delightful - but I have minimal experience with the sunshine easygoing pushover characters like Chris, I just dont stick to them. So I found him to be a breath of fresh air, and also fascinating in the way that a king is enamored with the common folk (also I really liked his design). But I'm drawn to madness and there's madness there. Chris has a certain sort of misery unique to the self-deprived pushover, a certain sort of depression, that at the time of my initial watching I had yet to touch on (I've done a lot with that since though with other chatacters).
But I dont want to focus too much on that, becasue I'll miss other things. Things like his genuine and beautiful capacity for and insistence on friendship, the way he always sees something redeemable in people; his affinity for soft and pleasant things, his need for safety and peace. You could explain it all away in pessimistic (although hilariously thrilling) psuedo-psychoanalyses, but what's the point of that? He's a chatacter in a story, he plays a role, he needs to be a certain way, and he is - and I'm impressed by all the ways that that is accomplished by the writers.
Ultimately I much prefer the show when I'm lucid and not suffering some sort of brainrot for it. I dont want that ... it's an inconsequential dark comedy and I love that. I dont want to get too close.
Sometimes you can really track what the writers thought of / saw in the interpersonal happenings of the main trio. Sometimes it feels misled, sometimes it feels plain daft, sometimes it feels like they were writing from personal experience.
And ultimately they're coming together and writing something presentable to an audience of children and their parents.
So damn delightful
DRAGON STANCE!!!
Elise loves Chris because
1. She is attracted to his heartfelt innocence, something she doesnt have
2. She is prone to flattery, and I imagine in the very least at the beginning he really saw her as a godsend and a goddess and he likely told her so
3. She can easily lie to him, thus allowing her to create her fantasy of normal living while simultaneously rebuffing the intimacy of truth
4. She doesnt want someone adroit or adored, because she is already like that - she wants someone unique in her eyes, which is somebody sweet and mundane and human.
5. She can still feel like the superior in their relationship, becasue he is a self-doubting pushover.
6. Again hes easy to lie to and easy to walk over. On paper she has his best interests at heart but I've seen it ... I've seen the way she teases him with an image of self-esteem / autonomy and then takes it away from him using shame and her angry mom voice.
7. For better or for worse Elise is a truly self-interested individual and their relationship is much more about fulfilling her needs/wants than it is about anything that's good for him. This is to be expected given their chatacter types and should not be excessively mourned or used as fodder for discourse. It's like this in real life too
Songs that are about Chris and Dan from The Hub's Dan Vs
1. "That's All" - Genesis
2. "Any Given Sunday" - Royal Republic
And those are the only ones. Dont let anyone ever tell you otherwise .
And they're not gay by the way. Common misconception. That Chris and Dan are gay with each other. They're not. They dont do any of the gay things . And they dont think about each other that way neither. Common misconception. Rookie mistake
I Like Dan Vs I think it's a very fun cartoon and funny show . One of the things I like is how the 3 main characters are all completely insane but they all think that they're the only sane one there .
Dan: I dont need to tell you about Dan.
Chris: His backbone has been crushed to dust partly due to a lifetime with Dan. He was a sweet boy who responded to emotional exigence, hence why he was soft enough to ever let Dan sink his talons into him to begin with. Hes a big eater, using food to self-soothe, distract, and work his teeth of his locked-in aggression. His aggression really is poorly regulated and greatly suppressed and you see this frequently. He isnt the smartest man in the world and operates much more on emotional, sensitive, compassionate levels, but these levels are often compromised by his extended exposure to Dan. STILL, he shows a remarkable resilience by always believing that the world and all the people in it are good. However I'm sure that some of this is a defiance to Dan's overbearing outlook as well as a form of denial, and thus isnt authentic, as there MUST be the capacity for hopeless negativity in Chris's character - otherwise he wouodnt hang out with Dan still, otherwise he would have the confidence to earn better friends. Chris is ultimately a learned and habitual victim, stuck in a hopeless freeze. He is a people-pleaser who never has a win and he eats and believes in fairy tales to keep from succumbing to the pain of it. He married a woman who A.) coddles him sometimes and takes care of him and B.) Who keeps secrets from him and never summons his intellectual faculties or bonds with him in those higher levels, which lets him stay small.
Elise: She married someone she could easily lie to / keep secrets from. She wants to live a normal life but she will not commit to that, she is still her work. In her dangerous line of work, she has had to become comfortable with abandoning her attachments in the flick of a switch in accordance with the situation (EX: in the vegetable episode she bartered with Dan one dangerous asset for another, to ensure the lesser of two evils, having to accept the reality immediately and not be hung up on the rookie mistakes that had brought her thus) (EX: in the Traffic episode she tasered Chris so that he wouodnt get in her way / involve himself with something dangerous. Ans she just left him there.) She acts like shes an intellectual and situational authority, but she is eccentric, self-interested, and sometimes reckless. She doesnr shut down situations before they start, even when she is more than equipped to do so. She dignifies Dan with face-to-face altercations when she could just silently take him out. You could say that it's becasue she respects her husband's friendships, but that's only on-paper - she dictates every other aspect of Chris's life, sometimes choosing to "let" him have autonomy like hes a pet (or, as it feels frequently, a child). I think she just needs the drama. She's been trained to diffuse situations, not necessarily prevent them. She does not understand Chris's subdued and fearful reality, BUT SHE THINKS SHE DOES, which is dangerous, becasue Chris certainly doesnt have what it takes to discover and establish his needs and boundaries. She tries to change his behavior using guilt and shame and that is NOT what he needs, he has enough of it. She married someone she could feasibly believe "couldn't handle her truth," so that she never had to have the intimacy of sharing it. When push comes to shove, she is ultimately SELFISH: she comes first. And due to her keeping a huge part of herself a secret, her always means JUST HER, not her and the people who know her - becasue nobody knows her. She keeps it that way.
This post was really hard to type becasue my nails are super long right now (natural) (I'm a princess fairy mermaid queen). Please appreciate that
