Koan
Shuzan held out his short staff and said, “If you call this a short staff, you oppose its reality. If you do not call it a short staff, you ignore the fact. Now what do you wish to call this?”
The koan explores the limits of words. Naming things creates a trap. If you call the object a "staff," you limit its true nature. If you deny its name, you ignore basic reality. A proper Zen answer bypasses labels entirely.
The koan asks for a response beyond "yes" or "no". Traditional answers might include a simple action, such as grabbing the staff, taking it, or hitting the ground with it. This shows you accept the object without needing to label it
