Today, I saw a video that talked about what an author wished she knew before starting a book. One of her recommendations was to write your story in short story format.
I've been a little stuck in the weeds trying to plot out each chapter, so I went ahead and tried it in short story format, going a step farther and writing it in a fairytale style. It actually helped me a ton and I have a full arc idea now! Taking a step back from the "science" of what is going on with my OC and referring to it in a vague fairytale sense really allowed me to look at the emotional journey I want my character to take and how the other characters might facilitate that.
Figured I'd share in case it helps someone else unstick their creativity.
In a fandom culture that often equates "good" with "100,000 words of slow-burn angst," minimalism can feel like a radical act. But sometimes, a single, sharp sentence cuts deeper than a three-page internal monologue.
If you’re looking to sharpen your prose and move away from the "wall of text" trap, here is how to apply minimalism to your fanfiction.
1. The "Iceberg" Theory
Ernest Hemingway was the king of this: only show the top 10% of the emotion, and let the reader feel the 90% lurking underneath.
The Shift: Don't describe a character’s grief by listing their feelings ("He felt sad, lonely, and remembered his father").
The Minimalist Way: "He left his father’s chair empty at dinner."
The Goal: Trust your reader. If you build the scene correctly, they will do the emotional heavy lifting for you.
2. Kill the "Filtering" Verbs
Minimalism is about immediacy. Every time you write "He saw," "She heard," or "They felt," you are putting a layer of glass between the reader and the experience.
Bloated: "He looked out the window and saw that it was raining, and he felt a sense of dread wash over him."
Minimalist: "Rain streaked the glass. He checked his watch."
The Goal: By removing the filter, the reader becomes the character. They aren't watching the character feel something; they are in the moment.
3. The Power of the Sentence Fragment
Grammar rules are great, but in fanfic, they can sometimes make your writing feel stiff and academic. Minimalist writing uses the rhythm of short, punchy sentences to build tension.
Example: The door opened. No one there. Just the scent of old paper and the sound of the clock, ticking down.
The Goal: Speed. Use fragments to mimic the way a heart beats or the way a panicked character thinks. It makes the reader move through the text faster.
4. Edit for "The Empty Space"
Minimalism isn't about being short; it’s about being essential. Before you post, go back through your chapter and delete every sentence that doesn't advance the plot or reveal something new about a character.
Writer’s Note: If you find yourself over-explaining a spell or a backstory, stop. Your reader knows the canon. They don't need a summary—they need the experience of your specific story.
The TL;DR for your next draft:
Show, don't tell: But make it short.
Cut the adjectives: If a noun is strong enough, it doesn't need a modifier.
Embrace the silence: Let the white space on the page do the work. A paragraph break can be more powerful than a paragraph of explanation.

If you use AI on your book’s cover, people will assume that the inside was created at least in part by AI as well. You will lose readers for it.
Also, it is insulting both to artists, many of whom are perfectly willing to create cover art for considerably cheap or even free, and also to yourself.
Your writing is worth more than that. Your hard work is better than AI in every way shape or form. It may seem the easiest and quickest approach to completing and publishing your manuscript, but it is not worth it.
The easy route is not always the best one.
Please have some pride in your work. Support artists. Support yourself.
