✨️A brand new installment of...✨️
If there is one thing I hate in this world, truly makes me want to climb up a wall...is when people try to tell you what you can and cannot do. I hate rules, at least when it comes to being creative.
So here are a few (slightly unpopular?) opinions I have, at least for writing & arts:
1️⃣ When people tell you that you shouldn't/can't "self-insert" yourself in your story. Like, fuck you, its my story, I can write it however I want. If people don't like it, they don't have to read it. (No hate to those who choose not to, though. Everyone has their own way of doing things, which is great!)
2️⃣ When people tell you what you have to put in a story. "Make sure you have this type of character" or "you have to have a character have *whatever* view point". Listen, I understand have diversity of views/people/etc., but there is nothing worse than watching/reading something and TOTALLY being able to tell the creator was just checking off every type of character or trope, just because they felt like they have to. Not saying you shouldn't have certain tropes or type of character, but let's ALL be honest and admit we've all read/watched something and been like "aw, yes, that type of character/trope". I think doing that takes the fun out of writing, and I think how you describe your characters or tropes should come naturally & be authentic to how YOU view your story, not what you think might get more views, clicks, etc. (Once again, I AM NOT saying you shouldn't have diversity in characters/tropes, because you should, but you know what I mean)
3️⃣ When you have a character that has unpopular/morally wrong views/opinions, and people get mad at it. Like, I'm sorry, but (at least with me) I like writing characters who seem genuine, like if they could, they would walk right out of the book and seem like an actual human. And, hate to say it, but genuine people aren't perfect. They don't score a 100% on the "best morals" board. Every single person to ever exist has had at least ONE opinion/view that others heavily disagree with. And yeah, it sucks when you find out someone you really like disagrees with you on something, whether it be politics, religious beliefs, yadda, yadda, yadda, but thats what makes every person human and REAL. And nothing pisses me off more than writers try and make the main person such an amazing person with no flaws cause that just doesn't exist....but then again, I don't like rules, so if they want to write their characters like that, they are more than welcome to do so...cause obviously they need my permission to do so. 🤣 But yeah, don't be afraid to make your characters assholes. Make some people hate them. Bringing out such emotions usually shows what a good writer you can be. Don't be afraid to make them messy. Don't be afraid not to give a character a redemption arch, cause guess what? Not everyone has one. Some people just genuinely suck, and I don't know why you don't see that more in writing. Make the main character REALLY good.....expect for that ONE thing....or a few things. Make people debate with themselves on whether they should root for them.
4️⃣ This one I think really might be me, but I think if you see writing/creating anything as a "job", you've already lost the plot. I'm a BIG believer in you have to enjoy what you do, or it will ruin you, and there is absolutely nothing worse than dreading your work. Like, let's take writing as an example. Think about what you are doing: You are taking words, made up of only 26 letters (at least in the English alphabet), and you are able to put them together in a certain way that when people read them, they are transported to fantasy realms in their head! They transported to cities, towns, castles, landscapes only YOU can describe! THAT'S FUCKING AWESOME! Nothing should ever made you dread that. That's a flat-out talent, and not one everyone has. Be impressed with yourself! Allow yourself to be proud of it!
To finish up this long-ass rant, just remember: Don't ever let someone dictate your imagination. Don't let anyone put rules on your story. No matter what you wanna write or create, no matter the backlash or hate you might get, do it. This world needs an escape from reality, and not just now, but it will always need one cause that's just how life is. But look on the bright side! You get to create one for yourself! Like always, these are strictly my own opinions, and you are more than welcome to disagree! Always love to read you guys opinions, so don't be shy, leave what you think, or things you hate about rules! 🤣
