Now in fairness, let's also remember that Dante wrote most of his enemies being in hell. honestly you gotta appreciate how nice and compact the hockey plotline was for the beginning of this year like
heated rivalry has tons of people (especially women and queer people) getting into watching hockey. forshadowing his later plot relevance, quinn hughes makes major hockey headlines in december with his trade to the wild. the olympics are happening so it provides a great entry point for people who don't know where to start. a lot of focus is placed on the hughes brothers because they're young and attractive and inside jokes about quinn seeing ghosts become more mainstream.
usa men's and women's teams BOTH win gold medals in overtime against canada. it's triumphant, it's a great story, the men's team even built up a narrative that they're doing this to honor a dearly departed friend.
the men's team immediately goes mask-off with the conservatism and misogyny heated rivalry used as the main antagonistic force to drive the plot. pwhl teams are now selling out arenas and setting attendance records and partying with flava flav. the men's team gets served cold mcdonalds with no soda by the president.
i feel like we don't get compact little plotlines like this very often. gotta really appreciate it

I have these miniature crafting dictionaries with word definitions for my scrapbook and they are peppered with grammatical errors and often incorrect but the funniest part is that they often choose the most obscure or offensive definition of the word and frequently leave out the most common definition.
I have some absolutely devious plans for some of these and some of them have me scratching my head wondering about their intended use

Honestly, the funniest thing about Into the Spider-Verse is the redesign of Doc Ock's tentacles. All throbbing tubes with visible orifices on the ends – it's like someone on the design team said "we can't have a girl villain slapping the hero around with big gleaming phallic symbols – how can we make a robot tentacle yonic?", and by gosh they succeeded.
Somebody on that team was like "it is absolutely essential that this Doc Ock's tentacles be physically capable of sucking your tits", and you know what? They were right.

The thing about the whole AD vs CE vs whether it's all just cosmetic discourse is that it totally ignores where this numbering system comes from. We should just call it what it is: Bede notation.
It was invented by one person for a specific purpose - to have a universalizable way of establishing historical dates, rather than having to deal with dynastically based date systems. And it was a really good idea. This is not surprising, since Bede is basically the father of Historiography. He also is the guy who gave us the notion of Primary Sources. Bede is amazing.
When a guy revolutionizes the entire way calendaring is done, he has the right to set his zero point wherever he pleases.
People have pointed out that one problem with CE notation is that it presents itself as neutral when it is exactly the same system as AD. What exactly is "common" about this era? The zero point doesn't become neutral just by effacing its source.
(Also BCE is nonsense. Just use negative numbers)
It makes sense for scholarly tradition to not want to be tied to a specific religion. But scholarly tradition is very enthusiastic about being tied to earlier scholarly tradition. The convention of AD was established by a scholar for a scholarly purpose. We know his name. We know what he was doing, and why, and how. And he was doing it better than anybody else. That is worth honoring.
Rather than pretending that it's a neutral system, acknowledge that it's not. It's not some naturally occurring "common era," it's the system developed by Bede, centered around dates that were important to him personally (but which he intended to be universally applicable).
Like we should be honest about the facts that (a) an awful lot of people have been measuring dates this way for nearly 1400 years and changing it in a non-cosmetic way would involve a lot of seriously obnoxious bookkeeping, and (b) the zero is where it is because that's where the guy who invented the system decided to put it. "Anno Domini" is meaningless to people who aren't into that particular Dominus, and "Common Era" is meaningless period (and imparts a false appearance of neutrality). Pinning it to its creator, though, is already scholarly convention and is objective. It may or may not be the year of Our Lord, and it certainly isn't Common (whatever that means) but it is unarguably the schema developed by Bede, for better or for worse. So unless we're actually going to rebuild it from scratch, we may as well call it that. And even if we do rebuild it from scratch, we should still call it that. Because that is what it is.

I have been informed that Bede notation may in fact have been first devised by Dionysus the Humble of Scythia to calculate the date of Easter more accurately. But my broader point stands.

I think I'm going to try to adopt "Bede notation" except where it would be funny to continue saying "the year of Someone Else's Lord."
Alternative suggestion: the problem with BC and AD is that both Christ and Domini are active statements of worship, and thus a mix of inaccurate and problematic for various nonchristian persons. But the years are still a reference to him no matter how you slice it.
So just switch the letters out to be able to refer to him without active declaration of worship: AJ and BJ. Surely nobody would complain.
Basic trouble shooting for people who aren't mechanics and have no interest in becoming one:
1. Does it have a spinny part that's not spinning, or isn't spinning the way it's supposed to? Look at it- is there anything stringy wound around the spinny part? Remove it. Applies to: vacuums, aquarium filters, blenders, and rototillers, weed eaters, and lawn mowers.
1.b Is there debris from the spinny part that is building up on an nearby surface? Remove it. Applies to: vacuums, lawnmowers, probably other things.
2. Does it have a part that air, water, or other materials move through? Look at it- is there a clog, even a small or flimsy looking one? Remove it. Applies to: lawnmowers, vacuums, pumps, probably more.
3. If it has a gas engine, does it have gas? The right kind of gas? Does it have oil? If it's electric, is it plugged in? Or is it's battery charged?
4. Does it have a filter? Is the filter dirty/clogged? Clean it. Applies to vacuums, pumps, and some small engines.
5. Is it electric? Is there a safety feature where it won't work unless a certain peice is in place? Is there something keeping it from popping up or into place? Remove it. Did a small plastic peice break off? Can you super glue it back on in a safe manner?
6. Are there fluid tanks? Do they have fluid levels between the empty and full marks?
7. Are there tubes and/or wires? Are they all attached and going where they're supposed to? If it has spark plugs, are they all where they're supposed to be? If it has belts, are they taut?
8. Are there bolts and nuts? Screws? Are they all where they're supposed to be?
