Lerp Psyllids: these insects feed on plant sap and then use the excess sugar to build protective structures around themselves
Above: three different species of lerp psyllid
These tiny, aphid-like creatures are commonly known as lerp psyllids or jumping plant lice. Their nymphs have specialized mouthparts that can extract the sap from certain plants, and the sugar is then excreted as a liquid that quickly crystalizes when it hits the air, allowing the nymphs to build intricate structures known as lerps.
Above: psyllid nymphs hiding beneath their lerps, likely Creiis corniculatus and Creiis costatus
As this article explains:
Lerps are basically pure starch with some proteins and fats. They are created by psyllids, which are tiny, sap-sucking insects. When psyllid nymphs imbibe tree sap, their gut absorbs the amino acids and nutrients, but they quickly excrete the water as honeydew and the sugar as lerps.
Above: the lerps of two different psyllids from genus Cardiaspina
Each species produces its own distinctive type of lerp. Some of these structures resemble clamshells, while others have a fuzzy, glassy, or basket-like appearance; most lerps measure roughly 1-5mm in diameter, but some have a wavy or tube-like shape that can extend to a length of more than 10mm.
Above: a pair of exposed psyllid nymphs
These structures provide the nymphs with some measure of protection from parasites, predators, and dehydration, but they can also attract some unwanted attention:
Unfortunately for psyllids, their homes taste sweet (containing more starch than cane sugar) and are a prized food of birds, mammals and opportunistic humans. The level of sweetness fluctuates depending on the season, the weather, and the species of psyllid.
Above: animals feeding on some sweet, delicious lerps
The nymphs themselves are tiny, and their bodies often have a flat, oblong shape that allows them to slide beneath their lerps more effectively. They spend all five stages of nymphal development tucked beneath their lerps; if the structure is damaged, removed, or destroyed, the nymph immediately begins to construct a new one.
Above: genus Hyalinaspis and genus Cardiaspina
When they finally reach maturity, the psyllids shed their exuviae (molted exoskeletons) and emerge from their lerps as fully-developed adults. The adult psyllids are winged insects that look like miniature cicadas, with their bodies typically measuring less than 5mm long (that's about 1/5th of an inch).
Most lerp-forming psyllids are native to Australia, but they also occur as an invasive species in many other parts of the world.
Above: nymphs of genus Glycaspis and Cardiaspina
Lerps have traditionally been incorporated into the beliefs and practices of Aboriginal cultures in Australia, which is home to more than 300 different species of lerp-producing psyllid:
Lerps feature in Aboriginal calendars, ceremonies, mythology, and cosmology, all of which have embedded biocultural knowledge about the time and place for optimal collection. These insects are central to Indigenous cultures, yet Western science knows surprisingly little about their taxonomy, biology, and ecology.

The term "lerp" actually comes from the indigenous word lerep, which means "sweet" in the Wemba-Wemba language of southeastern Australia.

I am better than average as a writer of short fantasy fiction. I got this way by writing exclusively what I felt like writing when I was in the mood to write it, over several decades.
This approach has not worked for ANY OTHER SKILL. I would be significantly better at music and baking and visual art if it did. The really confusing thing is that it did work in one case
Something that gave H.P. Lovecraft nightmares is the work of my favorite artist. In "At the Mountains of Madness" he specifically mentions "the strange and disturbing Asian paintings of Nicholas Roerich."
This is what Roerich's paintings look like:
#hp lovecraft thought penguins were grotesque and horrifying#he was not a difficult man to frighten
ok on the one hand none of this is wrong but on the other hand this is also what roerich's paintings look like:
you absolutely do not have to hand it to lovecraft but the previous set doesn't really feel like a fully representative selection

Due to current environmental conditions, I would have health problems if I went outside. I am not outside, so I am not having health problems. But a thing that I like to do when I am in good health is to go outside. But if I went outside, well... I don't mind telling ya, it's a bit of a mindfuck
Trying a new photo management application on my phone... It started out with my photos in chronological order. Please admire my old cat.
Actually Dragaera would probably be a very good fandom for Yuletide if you don't want canon-like things.
If, say, you wanted "Aliera backstory, but not the Paarfi version of it, feel free to make the tone as different from Vlad's voice as you want," or "Empress Zerika and the intrigues of her court" or "Sethra Lavode picks up gardening", those would be good prompts for Yuletide.
("Five Times Kiera the Thief met the Leverage crew" would also be an amazing prompt but Yuletide doesn't do crossovers)
The one concept that immediately came to mind and won't leave is "Rocza and Loiosh xenofiction." Outsider POV on something Vlad et al. are up to, or some of their own weird jhereg activities! Or both!
sometimes being a fan of something means not wanting them to make any more of it
What if there was a weevil that lived in multigenerational tree fortresses and practiced agriculture and could live for one or more decades. Wouldn't that be neat

Dreamed I had been forcibly put on a bus to a "convention" that was very very obviously a cult recruitment thing.
The ostensible "convention center" was being blasted with dangerously loud noises to keep people off balance and make them susceptible to various forms of hard sell. Seizing on the pretense that this was a convention, I asked a woman nearby if there was a quiet room. She said of course, the convention prides itself on accessibility, right this way. As soon as we got out of the main hall she started sprinting and I followed. She was taking me someplace we were not supposed to be. Without entirely breaking kayfabe she dropped a lot of hints that the cult was fucked up and she was dissatisfied and wanted out.
In a spooky sterile white hallway well beyond the main convention we stopped; screaming could be heard from the other side of a door. I wanted to press on to the quiet room or escape hatch or whatever security my guide had in mind, but she stopped to listen. It was a woman shouting at her boyfriend that if he would just rededicate himself to the cult she would resume having sex with him, saying things like "I'm so excited to finally love you properly, what the fuck is wrong with you that you don't want my love, it would be so easy." The two of them barreled through the door unaware of our presence and then. We were all in this hallway.
As cult couple stares blankly at us my guide opens the door to the quiet room. It is a morgue drawer with a large dog bed. "The meeting with the loud noises that bother you will only be 45 more minutes," she says. "You can take a break in here."
"If I did that, then when the meeting is over, would I be allowed to leave?"
"You can take a break in there."
"But can I leave?"
So both women pull knives on me and start yelling about how I'm rejecting their generosity. The (ex) boyfriend and I book it out of there and manage to escape into a parking lot where we are standing back to back surrounded by cultists.
"I really think my guide wasn't a bad person," I'm telling him, "I think she would have let me leave if there hadn't been witnesses, I think whoever she was before the cult turned her into a knife nut is still, like,"
And he says "Hey. Shut up. I am also a knife nut."
And I'm like SHIT but I say "Yeah but if you're a knife nut who wants to leave this place alive, we have a common interest here. And we got this far. Think about it."
Cultists close in. Guy pulls a knife. CLIFFHANGER ENDING, I WOKE UP
Despite generally being dogshit at platformers, by my own standards I'm not really having too bad a time with The Messenger so far. I mean, I'm dying PLENTY, but there are plenty of checkpoints so one doesn't really lose progress or get stuck, one can just figure out what went wrong and get it right next time.
However I do have this one weird quirk where I don't enjoy being insulted. If there's one thing that's gonna make me stop playing it's the death screen. Even though from a purely mechanical standpoint death is a slap on the wrist, and you're expected to do it, they just had to get cute
yup we're done here
