from the crumbs we get in the book i think it mentions that gregori was jealous and possessive so i imagine he enacts this on her as a way to “reclaim her” with irina being younger than him i imagine he was constantly paranoid about her leaving him for a younger man so any interaction she had with the opposite sex was punished in this way. i think the possessiveness ilya sees from a young age informs how he goes about his adult relationships, he overcorrects in a way and is very loose and detached with his sexual partners. i think it’s also why in TLG he asks if shane would want to sleep with other people because he is averse to possessing or “owning” shane even though it is a deep desire within him. he represses the jealousy and possessiveness within them cause he’s only ever seen it expressed as abuse.
