Noah didn't know what to expect when the car he stole from someone in the middle of the god damn apocalypse turned out to be one of the supposed alien saviors. The fact that the car unlocked before he even tried to jimmy the lock should have been the first sign that there was something up with the car. But Kris was sick and getting to a refugee camp was priority over questioning how easy it was to steal a car.
When the car started driving itself while Noah and Kris slept, that was when Noah actually started to freak out. Not in front of Kris, never in front of Kris. Kris didn't need to see his brother stressing out more than he already was, Kris needed to rest so that he could get the help he needed when they arrived at the refugee camps. Once they got to the camps, Kris would get the medical attention he needed and they would finally know what was wrong.
They never got to go to the doctor before the bombs fell and losing their mom was harder to process. Kris was devastated when she died and Noah had to focus on keeping them alive, keeping them going even if mom was gone. No matter how much it hurt that mom was gone, they had to keep going. She was always insistent about moving forward, about how you had to keep going no matter how hard things got.
Eventually, Noah had to confront the fact that their ride was veering them off to a different location. It was taking them somewhere far from the refugee camps and with Kris getting sicker, they couldn't keep putting up with this.
After checking that Kris was dead asleep, Noah turned to the steering wheel and sighed. "Alright, as crazy as I feel right now talking to a car, this needs to stop." Noah muttered to himself.
"What needs to stop, sweet spark?" called a melodic voice from somewhere in the car.
Noah jolted, surprise that there was a response. He turned back, looking at Kris's sleeping form curled up on the backseats. He turned back to look at the dashboard, trying to figure out where the voice came from. "Hello?"
"Sorry for the surprise, sweet spark. Just thought it was finally time to try talking to you, 'specially with the baby spark getting sicker than he already was. " The radio flickered, volume kept pretty low like whoever was talking was being mindful of Kris.
"Where are you?" Noah asked softly, contemplating grabbing Kris and getting out of the car.
"Name's Mirage, I'm one of the, uh, alien saviors that came to help you humans. I'm a Cybertronian, a species of techno-organic beings that can transform into what we call alt modes. Mine, happens to be the very car you two are riding in."
Noah's heart dropped, not knowing whether to be terrified or relieved about actually encountering one of the alien saviors that came to Earth to help the human race as a whole. On one hand, maybe he could get them help for Kris, on the other hand, he let Noah steal him and then proceeded to steer them off course multiple times for seemingly no reason.
"Where, where are you taking us? Why are you trying to take us somewhere that isn't the refugee camps?" Noah breathed out, trying to remain calm.
"You two are sparklings. Which means that you two aren't fully human, you're both cybertronian. Just stuck in human bodies. We make it a point to collect what sparklings we can and take them to base." Mirage's voice was steady, like he was having a casual conversation about the weather not about how he and the rest of the Cybertronians on Earth apparently DO kidnap humans.
"So you want to take us to the rest of your group because, what? Kris and I are supposedly not human and instead a part of your species or something? What are you even going to do to us when you get us to your base?" Noah was getting rattled, unsure whether to get angry or be afraid.
"For starters, our medics will give you two a basic physical to get a gage about your current health. Then they can get on treating the baby spark, we have types of medicine that you humans don't have access to and a healthy supply of medics who can treat both of you. You just gotta let me take you both back to base."
At the mention of medicine, Noah felt his heart stop. They could treat Kris, his brother would be okay. He just had to let Mirage, Mirage who only just revealed himself, Mirage who was still practically a stranger to them, Mirage who was an actual alien. Mirage who just offered up to take them to actual doctors (in a way that implied they didn't really have a choice, whispered a small part of Noah's mind) who could treat Kris and potentially save his life or make what's left of it more comfortable if it really came down to it.
Noah just had to let Mirage take them back to his base, back to the other Cybertronians. And then Kris would be okay. Kris could live.
"Okay." Noah whispered, before taking a deep breath and letting it go. "Okay. Take us there, as long as Kris can see a doctor and get the help he needs. Please."
"Of course, sweet spark. Get comfortable, it's gonna be a long drive home." Mirage's voice echoed throughout the car as the engine revved.
Noah's seat suddenly leaned back and shifting him slightly way from the peddles. The car started rolling forward, cruising down the road as Noah got comfortable in his seat. He sighed, turning his head to look at Kris and the pit in his stomach settled. They were going to a doctor. A real, though alien, doctor. Kris was going to be okay.
Reaching out, Noah loosely grabbed Kris's hand before closing his eyes. He had some, though fresh and fragile, trust that Mirage was telling the truth. He'd do anything to make sure his brother lived, he didn't think he could loose any more family.
Noah closed his eyes and let sleep take him, without much of a fight for the first time in what felt like years.
