The California coastline provides a wide variety of habitats for ocean animals to live.
From a bird’s eye view, you can see otters rolling among the giant kelp fronds at the water’s surface.
But dive into the intertidal zone, and you’ll find an entire underwater world nestled in the tidepools.
From a giant green anemone fighting for food to a hermit crab finding a new home, these critters remind us to pause, take a closer look, and appreciate the little connections around us.

The McComas Institute, known as Mountain School was founded September 10, 1867. Located in Joppa, Maryland, the school was one of three Freedmen’s Bureau schools in Harford County.
It was named in honor of local abolitionist, George March McComas, he was an abolitionist, a prominent landowner, and a tobacco merchant who worked out of the port of Baltimore. He appealed to the Freedmen’s Bureau for funds to build a school and a church for African Americans not far from his home in Linwood, Maryland.
It was built on one acre of land purchased for $30. A “colored” couple, George and Mary Ann Johnson, sold one acre of land to Abraham Waters, Charles Waters, Peter Bishop, Joseph Henry, and John H. Butler “for the purposes of erecting or allowing to be erected thereon a schoolhouse for the use, benefit and education of the Colored People of Harford County.”
The Freedmen’s Bureau provided financial assistance for construction and it continued to provide financial support until the Bureau was abolished in 1872. The Harford County Board of School Commissioners assumed operations and partnered with the nearby congregation Mount Zion Methodist Church, which had provided the labor for the construction and held the title to the facility. Church members made up a significant portion of the Institute’s board of directors until the school closed in 1939. Afterwards, the building was used by Mount Zion to hold Sunday school classes and church and community events.
It was home to several pioneering Black educators in the state of Maryland, including Mrs. Alma Mae Dorsey Nelms. She served as the sole teacher at McComas Institute, instructing grades one through seven. Local civil rights activist and Harford County educator, Janice East Morehead Grant, a former student of Mrs. Nelms, noted that her teacher educated “78 students comprising 7 grades [after walking] miles in the cold, making fires in a potbellied stove, and carrying water for us to drink.”
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Building restoration projects began in 1983 and 1995, the building was finally restored. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Personalities and Virtual Worlds Observation During and After COVID Lockdowns
Since COVID it is safe to say most of us as a collective are still getting used to communicating and going back out of the safety of our homes. Though some of us couldn't wait to get back out and go places whether it be or without a mask, others, however, were a little more hesitant. Of course, this is a very natural response to everything that happened in late 2019 or early 2020 and no one would blame you for taking caution moving forward. Though it isn't publicized in the media as much, COVID is still a very real thing. It is not gone, but as we all know life moves onward. With that being said it made me think about the specifics of us during the time of COVID up till now and how it changed the virtual world industry. Did we gain more users on these virtual platforms? or did we lose them? This post will talk about all of the specifics, however, keep in mind there will be no statistics or numbers involved. Everything that will be released in this post will come from personal experience and researching other people's experiences as well as what I've noticed since the time of COVID up till now, almost the end of 2022.
Introverts Before and After COVID With Virtual Worlds
Let's be honest, COVID didn't affect many introverts if any. We are so used to staying in our hobit homes. Whether it be creating something new, playing video games, vegging out, listening to music, or watching TV/movies in our spare time. We were in our natural habitat 100%. Nonetheless, if we were completely honest with everyone humans are a communicative species and we cannot survive without some sort of human interaction at certain points. Though introverts like myself tend to keep to themselves we still crave a little bit of conversation. Because of this, during the time of COVID, there was a small spike of introverted personality types entering and utilizing virtual platforms. Sometimes communication can be overwhelming, however, in small spurts we love it! We love being spoken to even if we don't always answer.
A lot of introverts went into these virtual worlds to communicate or even be creative on their own. The thing with this is it's not only about communication but also about experiencing new places that some of us wouldn't think of experiencing. Virtual worlds give our personality types an outlet to explore new places where we either can't go to those places or it's somewhere we want to go but can't yet afford to go. This became an outlet for communication and exploration! The virtual world industry not only appeals to gamers and tech enthusiasts. They appeal to creatives, singles (for dating), Businesses to stay connected from various areas in the world, and those who are adventurous in nature and enjoy exploring and immersing themselves in various worlds.
As most of us know, there are so many things that can be done and accomplished in a virtual world. More often than not virtual worlds are a platform for expression and businesses to stay connected. There are so many opportunities that virtual worlds provide their users with and the sky is the limit at the end of the day for all virtual world users! A lot of us introverts were found exploring and immersing ourselves in new places inside of various virtual world platforms, talking to the small friend circle we do have, and just enjoying life as if we were in person but from the safety of our own comfort zone during a difficult time.
After COVID, you will still see a good number of us inside these platforms. However, I've noticed through initial interactions that there are a lot fewer introverts and more extroverts inside some of these platforms now. This could be because the rest of us are enjoying our solitude by playing other various video games, being creative in spaces that are comfortable to us, and now that we are able to get out if we wanted to we still get that human interaction but face to face. Really it depends on the person but there haven't been too many introverts that I've been noticing or meeting after COVID inside of virtual worlds like VR Chat, IMVU, or even Second Life.
Extroverts Before and After COVID
Believe it or not, the virtual world platforms were popping up with those extroverted personalities. Between clubs and consistent chatting and communicating in welcome areas, there was a huge spike of people using virtual worlds in general during the time of COVID. This was primarily because they were unable to go anywhere during the lockdowns. Extroverts need communication and people to feel energized. They used virtual world platforms to provide them with the same lifestyle they had before having to stay inside. They are still able to communicate and go out and about from the comfort of home. They can be as vocal as they are in their reality and even create new experiences with new people for themselves. The clubs were packed inside of Second Life from what I have noticed and every person's inbox I got into was grateful for the conversations I struck up. To test this theory I'm not going to lie I messaged almost everyone in one club. Also, I knew which one of them was introverted by responses and who was extroverted. Yup! I see you my fellow introverts! Ha-ha.
There were so many people walking in different immersive places that typically I wouldn't find people. For example, there's a Zen, and Yoga place in IMVU and there was a "class" going on and the room was packed. It was crazy, that room never fills up, so keep that in mind. The number of people experiencing various experiences in a virtual setting was amazing during COVID. The clubs in any virtual world were packed and people were just out there living their best lives in these virtual worlds! It was truly enlightening to see.
After COVID, I do tend to see more extroverts hanging around than my fellow introverted tribe! But this is of course not a bad thing. I love that even though extroverts love to be out and about they are taking in the creativity and love for technology even after COVID lockdowns.
Conclusion
Overall the increase in users was drastic in virtual world platforms during COVID. It has subsided quite a bit since then and though there were a lot of active users during that time, there aren't as many now. Your more avid virtual world enthusiasts are the ones who continue their stay. But it is important to note just because numbers dropped doesn't mean they won't be back. Virtual worlds have been booming in popularity since they were given a title thanks to Zuckerberg at Meta. When you're rich you can name anything, hence the term Metaverse was born as a term to relate to virtual worlds and their industry.
Even as an individual who has a deep understanding of virtual worlds, there isn’t a set definition as to what a virtual world is. This is mainly because each individual uses a virtual world platform for something different. For example, my definition of a virtual world is going to come more from a creative aspect because that is what I use them for. For someone else, it could come from a business viewpoint. They could want to start a business in a virtual world in hopes it will take off. In this case, their virtual world experience would be more business-oriented. However, the most common is the individual who wants to escape reality. Virtual worlds are highly popular among individuals who try to escape their reality for one reason or another. This is because there isn’t a set goal or quests you have to go through like you would in a video game. You can do anything and be anything you want in a virtual world, and this is what ropes people in.
My definition of what a virtual world is would be; “A creative outlook and an expansive world where I can meet new people, network, pursue my creativity in interior design and create an online presence both through my avatar and land (or room depending on the virtual world).” With my viewing virtual worlds from a creative standpoint, everything to me is considered a blank canvas. A canvas in which an entire online community comes together and inhabits a vast online world that they create themselves.
However, my friend, who has been with me on my virtual world journey and has experienced them for himself sees it as both an escape and means of business. He knows virtual worlds won’t supplement his income but its something he enjoys as he is a workaholic in the real world, so when he relaxes he still needs to be doing something productive. His idea of a virtual world is; “A vast playing field of various blocks of ‘land’ that creates a full online world and is inhabited by a community of individuals who want to network, meet, and create. Just like an individual would experience in reality,” This proves that there are various definitions of what a virtual world is but these are just a few examples that explain it.
Nonetheless, it is essential to note that virtual worlds aren’t considered video games. You’re probably wondering how? Or why? And this is because, for the most part, video games no matter what even if their open-world has an end or end goal that you obtain. Not only that but video games also have quests, NPC’s, and a million different other things, for the most part, no matter what you’re always on a set path to reach the end of the game at some point. They also have story lines and dialogue throughout. Virtual worlds don’t unless you want them too. Virtual worlds are just like living in the real world but without the commitment. It has its own currency, pets, avatars, space to make your own whether it’s land or a room, and experiences that you make on your own or with others. Virtual worlds help to provide, for example; people like me instant gratification because everything is immersive and at your fingertips. You can have anything and do anything you want. Virtual worlds have more freedom then video games and are more than just a glorified chatroom.
Every avatar you see is a person behind a computer screen. Not everyone is on a virtual world platform for the same thing, so it’s important to respect people whether their reasons are ‘kosher’ or not. Virtual worlds give so many opportunities to individuals I highly recommend getting into them as they can be used in various ways. They can be used for education, experiencing new places, travel, shopping, building, etc. The sky is the limit. They are what you want it to be, and I hope this has not only convinced you to take that journey and explore the virtual world industry but will also show you that there is so much to life both online and offline.
Watch "OSfestival 2022 Day 2 Cherinet Parcel 061" on YouTube
Thumbs up to a fellow Kitely community member, Michael McHugh for creating an awesome video showcasing my OpenSim Fest 2022 exhibit, "CheriNet Creative HQ (CCHQ) - Integration of NFTs, AI art, and PoS Blockchains in 3D Immersive Virtual Worlds"! Michael McHugh and the other #OSFest2022 volunteers are perfect examples highlighting why we celebrate the "chemistry of community" at #OSFest2022. The sense of community is expressed through the bi-directional support of community members; acts of kindness; information-sharing; collaborative networking; and mutual interest in 3D immersive virtual worlds. Indeed, my fellow Kitely community member, Michael McHugh did a skillful job of recording my #OSFest2022 exhibit. Hence, supporting and encouraging a fellow OpenSimulator community member. It is greatly appreciated!
I am delighted for the opportunity to build an #OSFest2022 exhibit depicting my real life and inworld use of #3D immersive virtual worlds... sharing #NFT-related information; and showcasing AI art and NFT probjects of interest (e.g. Tezpirits; GAN GANG). Using 3D virtual worlds #technology, I built a visualization of blockchains... blocks of data linked together forming chains. For the CCHQ exhibition, the "data" recorded on the blocks includes a CCHQ Powerpoint presentation, and information about the art galleries within my Kitely-hosted 3D immersive virtual world, "CheriNet Creative HQ". Although my Kitely avatar ("Sally Cherry") teleported from the Kitely grid into the OSFest grid to deliver building supplies and "equipment" during the exhibit set-up, my OSFest avatar, "Sally Cherry" was the primary inworld builder and will be attending OpenSim Fest 2022. It is indeed a team effort to keep my vision, "Real To Virtual; Virtual To Real" moving forward. It is hoped that interested real life and virtual-based connections will take this opportunity to explore and learn more about the #OpenSimulator community.
OpenSim Fest is an annual Opensimulator festival held to celebrate the creative talents of residents in #OpenSimulator, the #decentralized #Hyperverse sector of the #Metaverse. As noted in a recent Hypergrid Business article, OpenSim Fest 2022 is being held over a total of 18 regions and 167 parcels dedicated to exhibitions, performances, merchant goods, and other exciting events. It will be held over a 17-day period from July 8, 2022 (9:00 am PT) to July 24, 2022 (9:00 pm PT). Regardless of what virtual world (grid) that you may call "home", everyone (including non-OpenSimulator residents) is invited. You are invited to visit my OpenSim Fest 2022 Exhibitor parcel located at Oxygen P61 as well as CCHQ!

Philip Rosedale's High Fidelity cuts deal with Second Life maker Linden Lab

“The tech changes are all about communication,” Rosedale said. “I don’t think it’s about pixels. I don’t think it’s about radical richness. I don’t even think it’s all about 3D. I think the problem and the opportunity is communicating with people in a naturalistic way where I can interview you.”
“We are excited to have Phillip advising us and continue to lead the metaverse conversation,” Oberwager said. “It’s a special time right now. And you really just need the history and the leadership and you need the moral compass.”
Rosedale said he is glad that Second Life stuck with its commerce model, in contrast to companies like Facebook that target ads at people based on “surveillance” and behavioral targeting.
“I think a lot of people at Facebook would probably agree that moving that into a 3D world has the potential to do grave harm,” Rosedale said. “Second Life has absolutely no desire or need to manipulate behaviors to target people with advertising, or to target people with suggestions even or recommendations. That’s one of the reasons I feel good about this.”
