There is a striking similarity of some depictions of Mothman and the layered robes of media depictions of medieval monks' robes. I now wish to smash these concepts together to create a Monk of the Moth.

I liked this post, scrolled for like another minute before I went “SHIT FUCK SHIT” and scrolled back to reblog it
I always reblog this one when I see it on my dash. When someone posts their own art, writing, or music here they are really hoping you will share it.
I miss the days when, no matter how slow your internet was, if you paused any video and let it buffer long enough, you could watch it uninterrupted
If you use Firefox, you can go to the about:config page, search for "media.mediasource.enabled" and double click on it to set it to false. After you restart Firefox, all youtube videos will load entirely even when paused! This also affects other streaming websites :)
There's more to do actually, now
go to About:config find media.mediasource.enabled and toggle it to false find media.cache_readahead_limit and change it to 9999 find media.cache_resume_threshold and change it to 9999
additionally if you'd prefer mp4 to webm
also in about:config, find: media.encoder.webm.enabled media.mediasource.webm.audio.enabled media.mediasource.webm.enabled media.webm.enabled and toggle them all to false
note! this will limit video to 1080p
and use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dont-accept-webp/ to kill WebP Fuck Google
We jailbreaking browsers now lmao

Filippo Palizzi (Italian painter 1818–1899)
Excavations in Pompeii, 1870
Oil on Canvas
119.5 × 86 cm.
Private Collection
@anthropologist-on-the-loose get peer-reviewed because your shared experience with the subject of the painting really heightened the emotional impact of this artwork for me ( An impact which was already high tbh. The idea that Pompeii was built by generations, buried by generations, uncovered by generations. What if I just started screaming and never stopped. )
"Built by generations, buried by generations, uncovered by generations" is ruining me, thanks
keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it's immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like "yeah so this is going to happen to the internet" and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online. I hate being right especially when I don't even get paid for it
*deep breath* If the antifascist (esp. American-centered) art you make or consume refuses to acknowledge the truth that framing this time period as the "sudden rise of fascism" along with its supposed volatility (i.e. "it can't last; that's not how its built") is just a comforting construct to keep white Americans from reckoning with their literal centuries of active and passive participation in this country's fascist, genocidal violence against Indigenous and Black people, your art isn't just wrong...it's worthless. How can you imagine dismantling unjust systems without seeing the blood on your own hands? How do you comprehend the size of the fight for mutual liberation without seeing that the scale of the threat is exponentially larger than your personal experience of the danger of state violence; or is your envisioned win condition only as shallow as the return to your previous sense of safety?
Ignoring the complexities and well-established enmeshment of fascism in Western culture for the sake of simpler stories to inspire rising to this moment in history only builds fair-weather fighters ill-prepared for the rigors of revolutionary action. It also widens the rift between those newly awakened to the struggle and their neighbors that have lived it for generations (and have built and maintained systems of community support and resistance that have protected them for just as long).
If antifascist art doesn't first demand you turn the eye inward, it is only escapist fluff.

the ashtrays in airplane bathrooms are a fascinating harm reduction metaphor. yes it's illegal as hell to smoke in there. yes there's a smoke detector that will snitch on you the second you light up. so why is there an ashtray? because if there weren't, your single momentary dumbass crime could kill 300 people. it is fucking vital that if someone does have a lit cigarette on a plane, they have a place to safely put it out.
"biblical angels" you do realise there are angels in the old testament that are literally just regular looking guys, right? you do know that the hallucinogenic incoherent descriptions are in like. two books. and the rest of the time angels are just guys. you know that, right?
and I'm not saying don't have fun with weird angels. I'm saying, either the eldritch forms are for special occasions, or the society of the angels is Many-Eyed-Many-Winged-Interlocking-Circles, Four-Faces-Six-Wings, and Mike.
Literally Raphael is just a normal person!
this is what the heavenly breakroom is like
Oh no now I love the water cooler angel
Two things worth noting:
1) the wild crazy wheels-in-wheels angels appear only in prophesies;
2) the prophets are trying to interpret things beyond understanding, and were 10th-century-BCE sheepherders.
With that in mind, just as a fun exercise, let's ask ourselves:
--what can be powered by fire?
--what has the appearance of smaller wheels inside bigger wheels?
--What might be taken to have "many eyes"?
What I'm saying is, if you wanted to go the "truly eldritch horror but from the perspective of the original prophets" route, the most accurate "legion of biblical angels" (or let's call them what they are, angels of the Tanakh) would be this:
I mean, youre not that far off, considering that the Ophanim are part of the Merkavah (divine chariot), and more generally the prophesies that detail the Seraphim, Ophanim, Chayot, amd any other weird ones im forgetting are closely associated with Merkavah descriptions. Chariot but beyond human compression is the whole thing that is going on and also a great descriptor of a car
Especially--if we want to push this to "yes, this is really what it was" instead of "we're just shitposting on the back porch" (although I guess that, too, is for shitposting purposes)--because these prophesies were made during the Iron Age. Explain chrome. I mean even the fact that the car body is metal that's thin and supple and smooth is already fucking wild, but then we add really fucking shiny metal beyond what you can obtain with Iron Age-era polishing techniques, and some of these colors wouldn't have been seen outside the finest of gemstones.
hey
hey friend
dont kill yourself tonight ok
you have a really pretty smile and i know its not always easy to manage one but itd be a bummer if we never had the chance to see it ever again

Magical Material: Bone Steel
Bonesteel is Steel that is created using bones of various creatures to supply the carbon. This makes the metal both normally tough, and supernaturally so. When Bonesteel is crafted, It imparts traits of the creature whose bones were used- such as Elephant Bones making the material heavier and tougher, Cat bones making it lighter and sharper, or Dragon bones making it hot and menacing.
Because of this spiritual imbuement, Bonesteel has an impact that isn't entirely just physical, hitting on a spiritual level as well, thus making it one of the few materials that can hit intangible targets such as ghosts or shadows.
Lastly, Bonesteel as a material is capable of being repaired without being reforged, simply requiring a source of Calcium (usually milk or bones). In order to repair Bonesteel, you require bones or milk to be powdered and then lay it into the broken sections of the blade, which will then slowly ossify and repair over the next few weeks.
If you use bones/milk of the same species as the Bonesteel was made from, the repair will be up to 10x as fast. For this reason, Bonesteel is often created at least in part with more common creature's bones.
However, while Bonesteel can technically be made with as many different bones as you desire, each species added intensifies the difficulty by a massive amount. Single creature Bonesteel is remarkably easy to craft, no harder than normal materials, but each one is around 5x harder.
2-Creature Bonesteel is 5x harder than a regular weapon, 3-Creature Bonesteel is 25x harder, 4-Creature Bonesteel is 125x harder, and so on.
Bonesteel is primarily used in 3 ways;
Weapons and Armor, imbuing fighters with the spirits of the bones used
Spellcasting Tools, enhancing the magic and it's effects with the spirits traits
Vehicles, allowing them to have capabilities unavailable to ordinary engineering
Special Notes
Often Alloyed with Cold Iron, using the Blood and Bones of the same creature
